Official Lyrics of O Canada!
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free! From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
The History of the National Anthem
Summary "O Canada" was proclaimed Canada's national anthem on July 1, 1980, 100 years after it was first sung on June 24, 1880. The music was composed by Calixa Lavallée, a well-known composer; French lyrics to accompany the music were written by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. The song gained steadily in popularity. Many English versions have appeared over the years. The version on which the official English lyrics are based was written in 1908 by Mr. Justice Robert Stanley Weir. The official English version includes changes recommended in 1968 by a Special Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Commons. The French lyrics remain unaltered.

Sir Robert Borden was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in 1896 as a Conservative party member and became leader of the Conservative opposition in 1901. He was elected prime minister in 1911 and is regarded today as one of the most successful politicians of the 20th century.
During World War I, Borden's ministry maintained vigorous support of the efforts of the Allies and obtained, for members of the Commonwealth of Nations, a voice in British policymaking. Largely through Borden's efforts, Canada secured independent membership in the League of Nations. In 1917 Borden sponsored the Military Service Act instituting conscription, which he considered necessary to the war effort. The measure was opposed by the French-Canadians and contributed to the growing antagonism between the French- and English-speaking Canadians. Borden formed a coalition government in 1917 and remained prime minister until ill health forced him to resign in 1920. As prime minister, Borden took part in the Imperial War Conference in London in 1917 and in the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. He also represented Canada at the Washington Conference on naval disarmament in 1921-22.

Colonel John McCrae
John McCrae began writing poetry while a student at the Guelph Collegiate Institute. As a young boy, he was also interested in the military. He joined the Highland Cadet Corps at 14 and enlisted in the Militia field battery, commanded by his father, at 17. As the first Guelph student to win a scholarship to the University of Toronto, McCrae graduated at 16 and attended the university for three years. After behind forced to take a year off due to asthma, in 1892, John became the assistant resident master at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph, teaching English and Mathematics. McCrae attended medical school at the University of Toronto after graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 1894, upon returning to his studies. The summer of his third year as a resident physician was spent at the Garrett Hospital in Mount Airy outside Baltimore. Garrett Hospital, a summer convalescent home for sick children, became the focus for an essay McCrae wrote about the young patients. A kitten has taken up with a poor [child] dying of muscular atrophy who cannot move. It stays with him all the time, and sleeps most of the day in his straw hat. Tonight I saw the kitten curled up under the bedclothes. It seems as it were a gift of Providence that the little creature should attach itself to the child who needs it most.

Sir John A. Macdonald: Father of Confederation
Sir John A. Macdonald RELATED LINKS COUNCIL SALUTES Kingston's municipal politicians offer a tribute to Macdonald during birthday Council meeting. RESTING PLACE The famous Cataraqui Cemetary is a veritable Who's Who of Kingston's past.
Born in Glasgow, Scotland on January 11, 1815, John Alexander Macdonald emigrated to Canada with his parents at age five. Macdonald attended the Midland Grammar and the John Cruickshank School in Kingston before articling with George Mackenzie, a Kingston lawyer. Mackenzie was so impressed with Macdonald that he sent him to open a law office in Napanee. When Mackenzie died in 1835, Macdonald returned to Kingston to open his own legal practice. In 1836, he was called to the bar. By 1843, Macdonald's law office had become one of the busiest in Canada. The following year, he was appointed as a city councillor. In 1844 Macdonald decided to run for a seat in the Legislative Assembly of Canada, which then consisted of Canada West (formerly Upper Canada) and Canada East (formerly Lower Canada, now Quebec). The two colonies were divided by nationality, with English prominent in the West, and French in the east. Both colonies voted separately and each named a Premier. Macdonald won by a large majority and was elected as the Conservative (Tory) representative for Kingston.
