ISBN: 1-55041-461-5 pb CDN US Lucy Maud Montgomery is know to millions of readers the world over as the creator of Canada's most famous redhead, Anne of Green Gables. Born in the tiny Prince Edward Island village of Clifton in 1874, Lucy Maud Montgomery grew up in the seaside community of Cavendish on the north shore of the island. Opportunities for women were limited in the rural Victorian society of the time, but Lucy Maud showed an unusually independent turn of character by trying her hand first as a teacher then as a journalist in Halifax before returning to the isolation of Cavendish to care for her widowed grandmother. It was during these thirteen long years that she wrote Anne of Green Gables and established herself as Canada's most popular and widely-read author.

Montgomery continues to delight and to draw tourists from around the world to experience her beloved Prince Edward Island Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in Clifton , now known as New London Prince Edward Island on November 30, 1874 to Hugh John Montgomery and Clara Woolner Macneill. When Maud (as she was known) was only two years old, her mother died of tuberculosis. Maud’s father moved to western Canada , where he remarried, and left her to be cared for by her maternal grandparents who lived in Cavendish. Her new home was quite isolated and her grandparents were strict and quick to discipline. The lonely Maud found joy in her imagination, nature, and books and eventually in her own writing.

Where ever possible confirming sources of information have been cited for the listings below. Where corroborating information is not cited I will be working to obtain it and will post the information when it becomes available. I want to thank the 100s of you who have e-mailed me your information regarding the Famous OverSeas Schools Alumni and Military Brats you knew and attended school with over the last 50 years. The military and overseas brats of this country, have made and continue to make contributions to business, literature, education, entertainment, medicine and the security of this country. And it is through your efforts that we both realize and recognize those among us as a group who have and continue to be nationally and internationally recognized for those contributions. Like any number of good editors I have worked with professionally over the past 20 years, I have tried to keep what I felt was accurate and relevant to the list. Some of you will undoubtedly disagree with what I have kept and some of you will disagree with what I have discarded. This will tell me I've done my job properly. Many thanks to Judith Dixon Gabaldon
