Directions for Future Research The accumulating knowledge on the role of internal poverty in teen pregnancy, drug abuse, crime, and other social problems must be applied to policies that truly impact families. The time has come for enrichment programs to replace impoverishment with empowerment. Therefore, future studies should investigate the application and long-term impact of prevention/intervention programs that attempt to go beyond symptoms and get at the root of the problem.

  • How I Live Now , by Meg Rosoff
Suffering from anorexia and her new stepmother, Daisy escapes from Manhattan to rural England to live with her dead mother’s sister and her cousins, three boys, teenagers like her, and their nine-year old sister. The day after she arrives her aunt leaves for Oslo, and a bomb goes off in a London train station killing thousands, the first bomb of the war.
Unlike the Second World War, this time England is invaded and occupied. The four youth find themselves at first isolated and then separated by hostile armies. Soon Daisy no longer stands out as the thinnest person around; everyone in the countryside is starving. Survival and staying together become their all-consuming priorities. Fat Kid Rules the World , by K.L. Going

education The Satisfied Learner: How Families Homeschool their Teens
By Cafi Cohen
Issue 99, March/April 2000 Maybe it's the fear of school violence or the lack of stimulating courses, but the number of homeschooling teenagers is on the rise. Some parents balk at the very thought of homeschooling their teen. After all, it's one thing to teach your daughter how to read. It's quite another to teach her trigonometry. But the idea that parents are solely responsible for instruction is just one of the many misconceptions about home education. Some other incorrect notions include that homeschooling inevitably leads to social isolation, decreased participation in music and sports, and college rejection letters. The following families' stories speak the truth: Socially and intellectually satisfying, homeschooling is an extremely viable optionfor both parent and child. NikkiThe Long-Distance Learner Nikki Davis, a 16-year-old A and B student in San Diego, California, hated school. Her number one complaint: There was no time for making friends. Ten minutes in the hall between classes and occasional after-school visits was just not enough. Academics were also frustrating. She loved biology and longed to experiment with local marine ecosystems, but this year's curriculum dictated that she memorize plant parts instead. In addition, typical school activities seemed childish to Nikki. A dedicated surfer, she was not interested in cheerleading, fund-raisers, or dances. Since seventh grade, she begged her parents to homeschool her. While Susan, Nikki's mother, agreed with the idea, her fathernot unlike many parents who attended public schoolresisted. Finally, just before her junior year, Nikki's persistence, as well as her continued unhappiness with school, convinced her father. The Davises decided to try home education.

December 19, 2003, Hour Two: Teacher Backgrounder - Depression Program Summary Guests Books/Articles Related Links and Resources ... SFKC Home Program Summary Experts estimate that as many as 18.8 million Americans (adults and children) suffer from some form of depression in any one-year period. New studies into the causes of depression are examining a possible genetic link and a theory that depression may be brought on or exacerbated by cell damage in a specific part of the brain. Hopes for a cure are high if these ideas should prove to be correct. A major issue is the diagnosis and treatment of depression in children. Ira’s guests feel that many cases of childhood or teenage depression are dismissed as shyness or “rebellious teenage behavior.” They also feel that depression is often misdiagnosed; that the problem is actually attention deficit disorder, which is treated very differently from depression. As a result of these misunderstandings, millions of children may be receiving incorrect treatment or no treatment at all. The points below are based on information from the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Mental Health Association. This segment is not intended for correlation with classroom curriculum, but rather for staff development.

The family is the oldest and most fundamental of human institutions. The conjugal, elementary, or nuclear family exists in known societies. The family has been subjected to enormous pressures as human cultures have changed from a rural to an urbanized, industrial orientation. These changes have altered the aspirations of "family", but have not greatly diminished the desire for entering into intimate relationships. All modern family units do not include children, although it is still the norm. The following links provide "safe areas" for children on the Net and an array of resources for parents. But might blogging be dangerous? By G. Jeffrey MacDonald Earlier this year, 13-year-old Shannon Sullivan of Wood-Ridge, N.J., was socializing in the same way as dozens of her classmates at Our Lady of the Assumption School. She maintained a personalized page on a website that contained her photograph and details about what makes her unique. Friends would surf by and leave fun messages. But then her mother found out. And now her site, and those of her friends - once lovingly adorned with everything from sound bites to video clips - are fast disappearing at the insistence of their safety-minded parents.

Diffusing Universal Design Globally: Learnsites for Young Teens and Adult Guides
Betty Jo White O. J. Selfridge , Kansas State University, USA With the goal of disseminating the Universal/Inclusive Design (UD) concept to the mainstream populations in the U. S. and abroad, the authors developed two educational web sites (hereafter UD Learnsites) to create UD awareness among young teenagers and their teachers and youth group leaders. The UD Learnsites project was completed via a Cooperative Agreement between the National Endowment for the Arts and Kansas State University. The Youth Universal Design Learnsite (YLS) can prepare young teens to become Achange agents@ who help increase the UD adoption rate among their families, friends, and communities. The companion UD Guidesite (GS) will prepare teachers and leaders to help their students and after-school youth group members learn about and spread the UD word. A much higher (than the current very low) rate of UD adoption could create a more user-friendly and inclusive global society designed for All. The Universal Design Learnsites= multi-cultural perspective is evident in the Links to, and examples and images from other nations and cultures. For global dissemination, local educators are encouraged to use the lessons as models, adapting them for relevance in their own culture via translation to their language, and using localized examples and learning activities. From international feedback, we hope to gather more and better multi-cultural images and examples.
