Spring 2005 / Volume 10, Number 3.
A publication of the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory
Through a Wilderness
Story by Rhonda Barton/ Photos by Patricia Cordell
The nation's longest-running Outdoor School opens eyes and minds through experiential learning in a magical setting.
WEMME The stillness of the Mt. Hood National Forest is broken by birdsong and the distant rise and fall of children's voices. As you thread your way through old growth Douglas fir, your footsteps muffled by the thick carpet of decomposing leaves, you're as likely to chance upon a skittish fawn as a knot of squirrelly sixth-graders. Scurrying like termites over a rotted stump, the boys and girls might be dipping into a fast-flowing stream for water samples, gathering spores, or peering underfoot for bear scat. Just as Oregon students have been doing for almost 40 years, these elementary and middle schoolers are repeating a ritual that takes place every fall and spring: spending six days camping in rustic cabins; learning firsthand about animal and plant life, rivers and forest ecosystems; and making self-discoveries along the way.
Surviving Hard Times
A newly revitalized nonprofit group, Friends of Outdoor School, is working to secure future funding from foundations, corporations, and private donors. In the meantime, though, far from the hubbub of ESD offices, the traditions of Outdoor School continue to be handed down to a new generation of campers.

Do you consider yourself to be a true horror, science fiction or cult film fan? Are you increasingly depressed by the manner in which your beloved genre is critically downgraded, denigrated and dismissed in the UK? Well, there is an antidote. Just an hour's plane journey away from the funeral pyres and charred animal carcasses that is the (real life) horror of foot and mouth disease, is the city of Brussels. While the British tend to associate this location as being the centre of European political and legal affairs, it is also host to the spectacular International Festival of Fantasy, Thriller and Science Fiction Film , which recently celebrated its 19th annual event. Unlike many genre based festivals, the Brussels event makes a conscious decision not to limit definitions of the 'fantastic' to any one film genre, but instead celebrates the very best upcoming releases from a variety of movie formats.

The Family Filmgoer
By Jane Horwitz Special to The Washington Post Friday, July 22, 2005; Page WE33 Family Filmgoer appears every Friday in Weekend. BAD NEWS BEARS (PG-13, 111 minutes) Many parents will view the strong language, especially as uttered by kids, as a depressing example of the coarsening of popular culture. Others will reluctantly grant that it's pretty droll salty and crude, yes, but not obscene. The script includes scatological slang, barnyard epithets, the name of the Deity taken in vain, parentage questioned, threats to shove things up people, middling sexual slang and innuendo, and an implied overnight tryst between Buttermaker and a boy's single mom (Marcia Gay Harden). Other elements include an on-field brouhaha with many crotch kicks and gags about protective cups for the boys and about a girl getting her first period. A rival coach (Greg Kinnear) humiliates his own son (Carter Jenkins) during a game. THE ISLAND (PG-13, 127 minutes)

OneTime.com Popular Tourist Traps Miscellaneous Tourist Traps Tips All Tips Sort by: Most Recent page 1 of 1 Tip Rating: COSI. Hyped by the city... Written by ColumbusGuy on August 27, 2002. COSI. Hyped by the city fathers as one of Columbus's 'premier destinations', the Center of Science and Industry, A.K.A. COSI in its current incarnation is not much more than an overpriced video arcade masquerading as a science museum. Possbily the shallowest science museum I know of- kind of like Nickleodean TV on steriods. The former location had a kind of old time, funky charm and some real science exhibits. And is it ever pricey! Including lunch, a family of 4 can expect to shell out more than $100 for a day here. Suitable mainly for pre-teens. Adults will find the IMAX movie theater and planetarium worthwhile. Happily these elements are priced separately. This bottom line is, anyone has never in their life been to another science museum might find it interesting. As soon as one goes to, say, the vastly superior Great Lakes Science Museum in Cleveland, all illusions that COSI a 'world class' science center will be shattered.

The entrance to Tomorrowland
If there is a "land on the move," it has to be Disneyland's Tomorrowland. With neon spires reaching into the skyline and the roar of futuristic vehicles filling the air, this land is a buzz of activity, light-years ahead of the rest. Designed to be futuristic but at the same time, completely down-to-earth in landscaping (every element used in the area's landscape is edible) and productive, Tomorrowland is an on-going experiment that looks to the coming centuries we stand to face as well as salutes the accomplishments we've already enjoyed. There's a great big, beautiful tomorrow for all of us; this very popular land is a Disney-style sampling of that day and age.
