Articles on Math Education Early Childhood Mathematics: Promoting Good Beginnings is the joint position statement by The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) on the importance of Early Math. "Early Math: The Next Big Thing," by Ann S. Epstein, Director, Early Childhood Division of the High/Scope Educational Research Foundation , is an excellent overview on the importance of teaching mathematics to preschoolers. "…The fact is, young children are themselves interested in math. Their natural curiosity is evident in their everyday play and work. The role of teachers and parents is to provide children with the appropriate words, materials, and resources to explore their interests and scaffold new levels of understanding..." Daniela O'Neill, the Director of the Centre for Child Studies at the University of Waterloo in Canada, has been studying links between preschoolers' storytelling abilities and their mathematical abilities a few years later. Certain aspects of storytelling appear to be especially important, such as being able to relate all the different events in a story (sequencing). For more information on her work, visit
