Family Science Program
The Family Science program is one of the initiatives promoted through Science in Schools. The Department recognises the importance of parents in encouraging students' learning. The Family Science program assists parents to encourage an interest in science in their children at home and promote a wider understanding of science in the community. Schools benefit from increased parental involvement in the science education of their students. A pilot funding program of 37 schools and extension education settings in 1999 has been used to develop a variety of models that may be used in school settings, all of which encourages the involvement of families in science activities. A range of documentation, including possible models of organisation, modular science units and possibly complemented by multimedia and support materials, is being developed as a resource to assist schools to conduct their own family science activities. Resources are available through the SET for Success section of SOFWeb http://www.sofweb.vic.edu.au/science/famsci/

Factors to be considered for successful Family Science Nights Advertising and engaging children's interest and enthusiasm prior to the event is important. A display, challenge or competition are draw cards. Food is a great incentive. We had a dinner pack of sausages, drink, cake and fruit as part of the price. This enables fathers to come home from work, pick up the kids and bring them to school for tea and family activities. Parents club volunteers purchased and cooked the food. Tickets were $10.00 for 2-3 people and $15.00 for 4 or more people. Organization A timetabled structure is important. Colour coded tickets with the different order of events helped guide people. Some one speaking on the PA system encouraged each change over. Activities These can be provided by Staff

2001 Press Release Index Family Science Frequently Asked Questions back to Family Science press release What is Family Science? Supported by Chevron, Family Science is a pilot program provided through the Family Science Foundation. The program is designed to address the under-representation of female and minority students in science-based careers. Family Science provides children with hands-on experience that captures their interest in science and math with innovative and easy ways to make science fun. This is achieved through skill-building workshops involving teachers, students and families. What makes the Family Science program unique? Parental involvement is the key to the success of Family Science. By including parents in the training, Family Science increases opportunities for learning outside the classroom and ensures that positive messages about science are reinforced at home. What are the goals of Family Science? To make science more accessible to the entire family by offering:
  • a nonthreatening, hands-on approach to learning scientific processes, concepts and themes; cooperative learning activities that develop problem-solving questioning and communication skills;

31 OCTOBER 2003 Too often women feel isolated and do not realise that they just shouldn't have to put up with the discomfort or even discrimination they experience. N ext Wave is committed to support the career of every scientist, regardless of their gender, race, and personal circumstances. Women in science are still too often confronted with gender bias in the workplace and unequal shares of family responsibilitiesboth contributing to make their professional development more of a challenge. Next Wave has a long tradition of empowering women by giving them the tools they need for a successful career and a healthy work/life balance. We have compiled an index of all our articles written with the specific needs of women scientists in mind to make it easier for them to find the advice they need and put it into practiceat work and in their personal lives. But this is far from meaning that this is a women-only area. There surely are men out there who are interested in these issues and would like to take a greater part in their family life or simply want to make our world more equal. Whatever your gender, this section is for you! Women in Science: What Are the Issues?

    GENERAL SCIENCE Family Science Night
    Stephan Unterholzner
    Sierra High School
    Manteca, CA Every year, I work with a local elementary school to implement a program we call "Big Kids Teaching Little Kids Science". The high school students volunteer to design, prepare, set-up, and present mini-lessons and demonstrations to K-6 students and their parents at a Family Science Night. The experience is very hands-on and the younger students often participate in the lessons and demonstrations with the high school students. The high school students find that in order to teach a concept they must really understand it well themselves. In order to do this, they do hours of research and practice outside of the school day before they present to the younger students. As a result, the high school students become experts in the area that they are presenting and often find themselves becoming mentors to the younger students. The Family Science Nights have a lasting impression on both the younger and older students alike. They have served to spark interest in science for those students that are in the beginning science courses. When the elementary students get to the high school, they often ask when they can help at a science night. The program has seemingly taken on a life of its own. Students that were once on the receiving end are now going back to their own elementary schools and teaching the next wave of budding scientists.
