Documents in the library include training manuals, substantive articles, informational brochures, and other education materials. Adoption JobSite is a free, national job matching service for law students interested in child welfare and adoption law and policy. It seeks to provide law students an opportunity to work in these fields with hopes that some will choose to pursue full-time employment in these areas in the public, private or non-profit sector upon graduation from law school.
    Children and Family Law Center
The Washburn University School of Law Children and Family Law Center consists of students, faculty and practitioners who share an interest in the fields of child advocacy and welfare and the protection of families. The Center aims to respond to the legal needs of children and their families by preparing law students to become advocates and creative problem solvers for this constituency. Students gain valuable hands-on experience by workings closely with alumni in various settings, including Law Clinic, mentoring, internships and externships. The Center also sponsors lectures, symposia, and workshops, as well as continuing legal education programs.

Representing Children consistently with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child - Family Law
The National Inquiry into Children and the Legal Process
In 1997 the report of a joint inquiry into children and the legal process undertaken at the request of the then federal Attorney-General by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission (HREOC) and the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) was published. Titled Seen and heard: priority for children in the legal process , the report considers, among many other topics, how the representation of children before Australian courts and tribunals could become more consistent with the requirements of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child . This article briefly outlines the main findings and conclusions as they particularly apply in Family Law matters.
    The child's right to participate
Article 12 of the Convention sets out the child's right to participate in judicial and administrative proceedings. It requires that a child capable of forming his or her own views has the right to express those views freely in all matters affecting the child and that they be given due weight in accordance with the child's age and maturity. Furthermore, it requires that the child be provided with the opportunity to be heard in any judicial and administrative proceedings affecting the child - this being either directly or through a representative or appropriate body.

    Family Law
As Tolstoy noted in Anna Karenina, every happy family is alike, each unhappy family is unique in its unhappiness. Family Law deals with both the happiness and unhappiness that can result from a family or a family like relationship. It deals with the formation, maintenance, and dissolution of family relationships, including such matters as marriage, procreation, adoption, domestic violence, child abuse, annulment, divorce, cohabitation, and other similar subjects. Only the termination of a family by death is usually excluded from its ambit, largely because an entire body of law on decedents estates is deemed a separate specialty. Family lawyers respond to the problems of families through a combination of legal, counseling, and related skills. More than most attorneys, they must understand and be able to deal with the personal and psychological as well as the formal legal needs of their clients. They also need to be able to deal with highly personal issues, maintaining compassion while providing a hard-nosed understanding of the realties which a client may face.
