"No Bullying Allowed "
We read about it in our local and national newspapers. We hear it on the news. Bullying is a chronic societal concern. It affects our children and our communities. The only way to stop bullying from hurting and destroying is to educate our youth. We as adults must act as role models. We must teach them to respect and appreciate differences, and encourage them to reach out to those in need. Some victims of bullying have no one to turn to for help-it is our responsibility to see their need, and help end their torment.
Bullying can have long term effects on its victims. Victims can suffer anxiety, low self-esteem, depression, and some times will develop bullying tendencies themselves. It can have a devastating effect on the victim, one with serious consequences. We all must take a stance to stop it.
What is bullying?

SERVING DIVERSE COMMUNITIES OF LEARNERS
AS SCHOLARS, PROBLEM SOLVERS, AND PARTNERS Introduction Reflective Practitioners. . . Serving Diverse Communities of Learners. . .
As Scholars, Problem Solvers, and Partners . . .
With reflective practice as a guiding principle and with diverse learning communities as a context, the University of Delaware prepares candidates to adopt and integrate three critical professional roles: scholar, problem solver, and partner. In serving children, adolescents, and adults within school and community settings, UD-prepared educators function as: Scholars, who are grounded in the knowledge of their disciplines, in pedagogical content knowledge, in knowledge of best practices informed by state and national standards, and in theory and research concerning individuals, families, and communities. Problem solvers, who construct practical, effective approaches to professional challenges using a sound base of theory and research, and who help others construct their own ways of addressing challenges.

The major provides a broad-based interdisciplinary education and a set of applied methodologies that prepare leaders and educators for family-human issues-community focused programming, teaching and coordinating responsibilities. These positions are found in education and in community, nonprofit, human services and business settings. The major includes general studies requirements in humanities, social sciences and natural sciences; specialized emphasis in human ecology areas; and attention to both education and community change processes. The Family, Consumer, and Community Education major offers two program options.

Return to Top The Teacher Certification Option is offered jointly by the School of Human Ecology and the School of Education. It qualifies graduates to teach Family and Consumer Sciences in Wisconsin's secondary schools. Many also teach courses in job preparation such as Child Care Services, Family and Community, and Education for Employment. A student teaching experience in a Family and Consumer Sciences program of a secondary school is required. Overseas student teaching and add-on certifications for teaching in vocational/occupational and special education programs are options within the teacher certification program.

School Debate: Teach Gay Issues? By Jessica Kowal, Staff Writer Most people don't know it, but October is officially designated Lesbian-Gay-Bisexual Heritage and History Month in School District 2 in Manhattan. Acting in honor of former district resident Harvey Milk, the gay San Francisco supervisor who was assassinated in 1978, the district's school board has voted for seven years to mark homosexuals' contributions to American society. "We use our position as a pulpit to remind people of what we think is important," said Karen Feuer, the president of the school district that stretches from the Upper East Side to Chinatown, and from Columbus Circle south to Chelsea and Greenwich Village. This district's public pronouncement, even as a purely symbolic gesture, stands out as a rare example in the city schools of official and open support of homosexuality. Even in District 3, encompassing Manhattan's liberal Upper West Side and Harlem, the school board voted down a similar resolution two years ago. Schools throughout the boroughs, which educate the most ethnically diverse student population in the United States, celebrate and honor world cultures with events tied to the Chinese New Year, African-American History Month in February, or other festivals. But while student groups or individual teachers might discuss homosexuality, the Board of Education takes no position on teaching the lifestyle, which often is a matter of pride for gays and lesbians.

TEACHING KIDS TO YAWN AT COUNTERFEIT WONDER
by Dale McGowan
We don't experience wonder, you know, we secular types. Ask a Christian in case you thought we did. Our lives are coldly mathematical, devoid of wonder, sterile, lifeless, yada yada. Wonder requires religious faith. Funny, though, how often I've experienced something that seemed peculiarly similar to the dictionary definition of wonder. I wonder what it could have been?
Whatever it was, I'm assured, it couldn't have been actual wonder. Real wonder is derived only from contemplation of God and a knowledge that he created all that is. He is, after all, wonderful...no, REALLY wonderful, really especially great and powerful, super special and eternal and large and clean and...
Oh, I'm sorry, was I boring you? Me too. And therein lies my point. I have always found the platitudinous wonder of the Bible flat, hollow, close to meaningless. It has never moved me even as metaphor, rendered pale by its vague and colorless hyperbole.
Now try these on for size:
-If you condense the history of the universe to a single year, humans would appear on December 31st at 10:30 pm.

We realize the ideas and experiences presented here do not represent the only way to teach about fatherhood in a university setting. We believe the ideas are worth considering, however. Our main hope is that this paper serves as encouragement to instructors and program chairpersons contemplating offering a fatherhood course or expanding the use of fatherhood materials in other family course offerings. Offering more of such course work could add depth to our family curricula while making a positive contribution to ongoing efforts to promote positive paternal involvement. It would also meet both a personal interest of students and a need for better understanding of issues related to fatherhood at the societal level. APPENDIX A ABBREVIATED READING LIST
