A great tomato recipe! Click here for larger view
Tomatoes are in BIGTIME! We started picking those delightful red things (we also have delightful pink, yellow, orange, cherry, grape and plum things) on August 1 for sale. However, it wasn't until the 12th before we had a great supply. As of August 17 we started selling 1/2 bushels of canning tomatoes for $7. This is roughly 29 cents a pound. Our slicing tomatoes are mostly 96 cents a pound. We do have 2 quart trays of nice slicers for $3.50. Since these trays weigh roughly 4.5 pounds, the average cost here is somewhere around 79 cents a pound. By the way, we also have this year that famous heirloom tomato Brandywine!

What We Stand For
What is a Family Farm?
Current farm policy, however, promotes environmental destruction and the loss of economic fairness and freedom. This policy forces family farmers to exploit their land by producing more to partially compensate for lower returns which contributes to the economic decline of the family farm system. This also leads to farm consolidation, foreclosures and more industrialized agriculture resulting in further concentration of economic and political power within faceless and unaccountable multinational corporations.

Bill Christison

Bill Christison on his farm in Chillicothe, Missouri. Photo by Nic Paget-Clarke. Bill Christison is president of both the Missouri Rural Crisis Center and the U.S. National Family Farm Coalition. This speech was presented at the RIAD International Forum July 5, 2000 Porto Alegre, Brazil. I am pleased to be here representing family farmers from the United States who are members of the National Family Farm Coalition. My family farm is in Missouri. We raise soybeans, corn, wheat, hay and cattle on 2,000 acres. I also serve as the President of the Missouri Rural Crisis Center representing over 5,000 farm families who are fighting to preserve family farm agriculture. The fight we are waging is not just local or national. It is global. As family farmers, many of the barriers to our profitability and survivability are the same - whether in Brazil, France, Canada, Mexico, or the U.S. The increasing role of the multi-national corporations in controlling both the inputs and the marketing of our commodities jeopardizes our very existence.

Careers Publications SEARCH Research 2020 Vision Countries Publications ... 2020 Discussion Papers 2020 Discussion Paper No. 40 The Family Farm in a Globalizing World The Role of Crop Science in Alleviating Poverty Michael Lipton June 2005 Executive Summary The Argument
  • Family farms have advantages that enable them to dominate. Small farms have lower labor-related transaction costs and more family workers per hectare, each motivated to work and to find, screen, and supervise hired workers. Large farms have lower capital- and land-related transaction costs, allowing owners to more readily finance equipment, which they can use over many hectares. So small farms have advantages in early-developing countries, which have low capital per unskilled worker and scarce land per person, while large farms win out in developed countries, with more savings, capital, and (usually) good rural land per unit of unskilled rural labor. Despite differing farm size and techniques, family management dominates farming at all levels of development. Consequentlyunlike virtually any other major sector, even retailingthe economic advantages of family oversight prevail in farming across a wide range of development levels, typical farm sizes, capital/land/labor ratios, and types of product and ecology. Data strongly suggest that such farms retain competitive advantages despite market distortions, and despite some genuine and growing market handicaps as agricultural supply chains globalize and concentrate. The evolution of the family farm is thus linked to economic development.

    The Vision
Building upon its national award-winning successes in youth development and informal education, the zoo built a farm that is run by kids for kids of all ages. Our Trillium Creek Family Farm, as part of the zoo's multi-feature Great Northwest exhibit, is an exhibit where millions of visitors can personally connect to farms, farm living and farm-related issues. What is Family Farm?
Family Farm is a place where high school youth are trained by professional zoo staff to run an exhibit on the grounds of Oregon's most popular attraction. Students gain practical experience in animal care and public speaking, so they can teach child and adult zoo visitors about farm life and the rich agricultural heritage of the Pacific Northwest. The Message
Visitors may hear about what farming was like in Oregon in the mid-1800s, about how there were produce farms within Portland's city limits as recently as the 1950s, or how modern technology helps boost farm productivity on today's farm.

    DECLINE OF THE FAMILY FARM
At the start of the century, Vermont was farm country. Eighty percent of the state was farmed. At century's end, only 20 percent is. The number of farms in the state has fallen from 32,000 in 1900 to about 6,000 today, with fewer than 2,000 of those in dairy. The opening of the 20th century saw a shift in farming: Sheep, which so dominated the 19th century, were being traded for cows, which were more profitable. But it was tough for farmers to make a go of it in Vermont, especially as the population grew and development pressures increased. It is difficult to generalize about agriculture in Vermont: Even though there are fewer cows and fewer farms than a century ago, milk production is up, thanks to better breeding and improved feeding. Vermont remains first in milk production in New England, but agriculture is diversified today. Dairy may generate 75 percent of the gross receipts, but the remaining 25 percent is widely scattered in areas as diverse as Christmas trees, cut flowers, vegetables, lamb and apples.
