82. Family Farms In Montana History; The 1910 Expedition
The family farm may be the most important institution in American history. Of course, though family farms have been the setting for scenes of happiness,
http://www.edheritage.org/1910/folkways/familyfarm.htm
"Five unrelated persons were a bunch of travelers or settlers.
A family of five was a cultural imperative."
Elliott West T he family farm may be the most important institution in American history. In America, the ideal of freedom was more than the lofty words of politicians. In America, the dream that one could shape one's own destiny was made a practical possibility for many thousands of people because land was available. People flooding west thought little about the claims Native Americans might have to the land. They intended to struggle and to advance themselves, to "prove up." The landscape of Montana changed quickly. People carried their cultural ideals with them, and they quickly applied a geometric grid on the land, building fences along straight section lines and plowing fields in straight furrows. Towns were laid out on precise grids.
A human order was taking shape upon the land. The landscape was being humanized as settlers enacted their culture. Along the roads and in the towns, the spires of school buildings, the steeples of churches, and the clock towers of courthouses began rising as a new a moral and intellectual order transformed the geographical space into a particular human place. Montana became what historian Elliott West has called a "value-scape." Poor people pooled their cash to build school buildings and hire teachers. This was often the first activity that got a group of people in an area working together as a community. In a sense, the presence of children and the commitments of their families was the foundation upon which communities were built.

OOHMAHNEE FARM ANIMAL SANCTUARY
OohMahNee is a 501 c (3) charitable organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitative care, protection, and placement, of abused, abandoned, neglected, or displaced farmed animals, and equally dedicated to protecting human health, the environment, and promoting a compassionate lifestyle through humane education.
Initially intended to be a small privately funded safe haven for several rescued farm animals, OohMahNee grew from the great demand for farmed animal rescue and sanctuary. Once people learned that there was a sanctuary for farmed animals, OohMahNee’s barn space filled up quickly as farmers retired their favorite animals, law enforcement called upon OohMahNee for assistance with cruelty and neglect cases, and compassionate individuals alerted OohMahNee staff members to various situations of farmed animal abandonment and displacement. In 2000, OohMahNee was forced to incorporate in order to continue to provide its services to the animals and people of Pennsylvania, and the rest of the nation.
OohMahNee regularly assists law enforcement, farmers, and other state agencies with matters that involve farmed animals. OohMahNee is open to the public and annually welcomes thousands of visitors who come to tour the animal sanctuary and Humane Education Center.

Updated 224 days 3 hours 14 minutes ago. Other descriptions of Family farm The family farm is a farm owned and operated by a family . It is the basic unit of the mostly-agricultural economy of much of human history and continues to be so in developing nations . Alternatives to family farms include those run by agribusiness or collective farming In developed nations the family farm is viewed sentimentally, as a lifestyle to be preserved for tradition's sake, or as a birthright. It is in these nations very often a political rallying cry, against change in agricultural policy , most commonly in France Japan , and the United States where rural lifestyles are often regarded as desirable. In these countries, "strange bedfellows" can often be found arguing for similar measures despite vast differences in

ICAN Organizer Matt Russell and MN farmer Audry Arner at the G8 Final Push concert in Edinburgh Iowa is an agricultural powerhouse. It is number one in the nation for pork, corn and soybean production. Twenty-four percent of all hogs nationally are raised in Iowa. Many of the state's industries are related to agriculture including meatpacking, which is a major source of jobs in many areas of the state. As an agricultural state, farming issues greatly impact all of Iowa's residents, effecting everything from water quality to property taxes. There have been drastic changes in the rural economy in the last decade. While farmers and their families are working hard to make ends meet, agribusiness interests, particularly industrial livestock facilities, are infiltrating our rich farmland and pushing the family farmer out of business. As factory-style animal production has gained a stranglehold in Iowa, thousands of Iowa's family farmers go under every year. The livestock factories that replace the family farms greatly distress Iowa's environment and rural economy. ICAN is committed to policies that will promote sustainable family farms and strengthen rural communities.

    90. Sustainable Table: The Issues: Loss Of Family Farms
Information on the loss of family farms and how consumers can make a difference with their choices.
    http://www.sustainabletable.org/issues/familyfarms/
home the issues loss of family farms The dramatic expansion of industrial agriculture (or factory farming) has made it increasingly difficult for small family farmers in the U.S. The food industry is now dominated by a handful of giant corporations which benefit from huge government subsidies and from trade policies that favor large-scale production. Family farmers are being forced out of business at an alarming rate. According to Farm Aid, 330 farmers leave their land every week . As a result, there are now nearly five million fewer farms in the U.S. than there were in the 1930's Of the two million remaining farms, only 565,000 are family operations Furthermore, very few young people are becoming farmers. Half of all U.S. farmers are now between the ages of 45 and 65, and only 6% of all farmers are under the age of 35 Given these trends, it's essential to support family farmers before they are replaced by large-scale, corporate-owned, industrial agriculture operations. Why are family farms important? In addition to producing fresh, nutritious, high-quality foods, small family farms provide a wealth of benefits for their local communities and regions.

When Judie Glen started Glen Farms at the Guelph Farmer's market in 1984, Her goal was to make some extra money for Christmas. Judie and David Glen The $7 dollars paid for photocopies for the first hand-drawn labels (we still have the receipt!) The imported beer bottles were for the herb vinegars. (stubbies just didn't have the right look.) The old handed down recipe for strawberry jam taught us about the flavour you get by using old fashioned, time honoured cooking methods. In fact the preserves made by Judie and David were quickly recognized as something extra special. These beautifully packaged preserves were bursting with flavour in a way that nothing at the farmer's market could match. It didn't seem very long until a volunteer buyer from the Art Gallery of Ontario asked Judie to supply their gift shop. The elegant country packaging was just what she wanted. Soon Glen Farms products were being sold, and creating loyal customers, in specialty food and fine gift shops all over Ontario.
