Fall Welcome!
Welcome to my fall pages. It's that crisp, cool time of year that I love so much. Of course here in California it is still warm, but I can imagine that I'm still a little girl growing up in Ohio and jumping into the big mounds of leaves that my brothers and my sister and I would rake and jump into.

Kid's Fall Craft Links
It's time to dig out the finger paints, get down the construction paper and scissors, find all the stray crayons and have fun, fun, fun!.
I'm not sure what fall craft projects I'll do with my kids this year. Last year we had handprint turkeys hanging in the window, all kind of pumpkins they'd made and colored, and hand print leaves all over the windows. We made scarecrows too using construction paper, yarn hair and scraps of fabric. I had some old straw hats I use for decorating that had gotten squashed so I even cut straw "hats" out of them for each of the kids scarecrows. They turned out so cute that I hated to take them down when fall was over.

Nature Collage
Identifying leaves Take the children out for a walk to identify trees and collect leaves. Then create a nature collage at home - as big as you can! Print out our tree and leaf outlines first to take on your walk. Then use the tree outlines as a guide to create a tree - perhaps out of brown paper or card - on which to stick your leaves. If you take some paper and brown crayons with you on your walk you could take bark rubbings as well, and use these to collage the trunks of the trees. Fall place mat / window picture
This craft is easiest if you have access to a laminator, but can also be done, with patience, with a supply of contact paper (clear sticky-back plastic). It is a super way for kids to choose, compare and arrange contrasting leaves and preserve them for a while. First you will need a frame. Find a piece of card or paper in autumn colours and cut it so that it is just slightly smaller than your laminating pocket, or the same width as your contact paper. Mark and then cut out a rectangle from the inside so that you are left with a frame. Instructions for laminator: Open your laminating pocket and place the frame correctly inside. Choose a selection of autumn leaves and arrange carefully within the frame. If you are making a window picture you must leave some gaps between the leaves for the sun to shine through - but if you leave too much clear space you will have bubbles in the finished product. When you are satisfied with the result, close the pocket and run it through the laminating machine. Trim the edges if necessary. Instructions for contact paper: Contact paper is notoriously difficult to handle, so take a deep breath before you start! Decide on the finished size of your place mat / picture and cut two pieces of contact paper to size. Peel the backing off the first piece and carefully lay your frame on top of it to steady it. Now arrange your leaves.

Fall crafts for children
Make some simple crafts with your children for the fall, using things we normally throw away.
When the weather starts to cool off, and the sun goes down before the children's bedtime, our thoughts turn to activities to keep them occupied. Crafts can be a fun way to spend an evening. Try some of the following for family fun: Save your empty bleach bottles, and turn them into attractive covers for plain plant pots. Simply cut off the top (save the handle and top for a disposable funnel) and decorate the bottom using scraps of material, or construction paper. Make a doll using an empty detergent bottle. Most have the same general shape as a doll. Decorate a styrofoam ball for the head, adding eyes, nose, lips, hair and maybe a hat, push the detergent cap into the head and screw on to the bottle. Make arms from pipcleaners and dress with material scraps. How about making a bowling game? Save detergent bottles, rinse out, half fill with sand, and glue the lids on. arrange at the end of a hallway and you have a bowling alley. For older children, they could try their hands at a mosaic from broken plates, cups etc. Use a small wooden picture frame with a heavy piece of cardboard on the back, and glue the broken pieces in place, fill the spaces in with grout and you have an attractive trivet, or cup rest.

Looking to make some sweet Fall memories with your little ones? Here are some great ideas to get your family laughing, smiling and enjoying each other's company during these crisp Autumn days.
    - Hit the trail.
Kids love to be outside. The out-of-doors is a huge playground and children are naturally attracted to it. Exploring some of the hiking trails in and around your community is a great way to spend time together. While you're walking...
** Collect leaves. Take them home and arrange them on a piece of poster board measuring approximately 17 inches by 12 inches. Smooth a piece of clear contact paper over the poster board on both sides, laminating the board and leaves. Now you have a special placemat to use for the remainder of the season.
** Contact your local library to ask where you can find a guidebook on local flora and fauna. Take it on your hike and try to identify as many different trees, plants, and critters as possible.
** Go sliding. Sure, you take your kids to the park. But do you go down the slide with them? Do you swing alongside them? Don't hurt yourself, of course, but joining in the fun will make your outing that much more enjoyable for both of you.
