A description of SAS operations during the Falklands war.
    http://www.britains-smallwars.com/Falklands/sas.htm
SAS Operations When Argentina invaded the Falklands on 2nd April 1982, both Brigadier Peter de la Billiere and Lieutenant-Colonel Mike Rose, the Commander of 22 SAS, fought hard to have the regiment included in the task force. By early April, members of both D and G squadrons were on their way. South Georgia During the operation to retake South Georgia, bad weather trapped SAS men on a glacier and a Wessex 3 and two Wessex 5s were sent to retrieve them. The first Wessex lifted off as the wind whipped up the snow. The Wessex from HMS Tidespring lifted off, but the pilot lost his bearing in the snow and crashed, skidding for some 50 yards, with the Wessex tipping over. The other two helicopters now embarked their troops. They lifted and landed next to the crashed Wessex and took on her aircrew and soldiers. Both aircraft dumped fuel to carry the extra load. Visibility by this time was practically zero and the wind and snow had not abated. The helicopters lifted off, and the Wessex 3, equipped with radar, took off with the Wessex 5 following astern and made their way down the glacier. Seconds later, the helicopters traversed a small ridge and the Wessex 5 flared violently and struck the top of the ridge. It rolled onto its side and could not be contacted by radio. The remaining overloaded helicopter returned to the ship, some 30 miles away to the north, and disembarked its passengers. The Wessex 3 returned to the crash site, but was unable to land. They made contact by radio and confirmed there were no serious casualties. The Wessex 3 returned to Antrim to wait for a break in the weather. An hour later an opportunity presented itself and the Wessex 3 flew back and embarked the survivors and was flown back to Antrim by Lt-Commander Ian Stanley RN, who was awarded the DSO.

    Introduzione

The Falklands War 1982 Index When this site was created and developed, its aim, which remains, was to record those conflicts since 1945 in which British service personnel have been called upon to do their duty, reported as far as possible through the eye-witness accounts of those involved, and to create Honour Rolls, where none existed before, of those who gave their lives in service to their country. As a result this web site has become a valuable historical resource due to the voluntary efforts of our contributors, free from the profit-making needs of media publishers. NEW

    The Falklands War
Introduction Causes of the War Politically, the "junta"'s worst nightmare was unfolding. The labor unions were joining forces with "Las Madres de Mayo," an organization representing relatives of the political prisoners and disappeared. This alliance meant that the enormous Argentine middle class was uniting against the government. The Conflict ," a ship belonging to the Argentine Navy. ," General Galtieri had a very specific goal in mind: to save his government. Forcing negotiations over the Falklands was a gamble, and it was up to the British to call his bluff. The Battle for the Falklands , describes its best weapons: "She had at least six ships fitted with Exocet sea-skimming missiles, also the principal surface weapon of the Royal Navy. She had four submarines, two of them formidably difficult to detect with sonar." ," was a "just war." As Earl H. Tilford, Jr. writes in "Air Power Lessons," a chapter from Military Lessons of the Falkland Islands War, "Napoleon Bonaparte noted that in war the moral is to the physical as three to one"

The Imperial War Museum Falklands War 1982, Linda Kitson's artistic record Linda Kitson was commissioned in April 1982 and sailed on the QE2 with British troops bound for the Falklands. The QE2 was part of a naval task force sent by the British government to defend the Falkland Islands against Argentinean invasion. Initially it was expected that Kitson would go only as far as Ascension Island, the refuelling point for the British forces on their way to the South Atlantic, but in the event she remained at sea and disembarked with the troops at San Carlos. She followed the progress of the British forces across the island to Port Stanley and returned to Britain in July 1982, having been away for three months. During this time Linda Kitson made over 400 drawings, working swiftly in cont© crayon, sometimes in sub-zero temperatures. Her drawings record the experiences of the soldiers in training and briefings on the QE2 and SS Canberra, during disembarkation and behind the lines. She was usually three or four days behind the action and therefore witnessed little of the fighting or its consequences. With hindsight she felt that the 'horrors of war' were best left to the photographers anyway, and that she did her best work recording the daily life of the troops and the conditions in which they had to operate.

    Twenty Years On
The nature of friendship: Britain, America and Argentina during the Falklands War
    W
hen, twenty years ago, Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands – subjecting their British inhabitants to the severest tyranny imaginable (they made them drive on the right hand side of the road) – many Reagan administration officials found themselves in the rare position of agreeing with Mario Vargas Llosa, in that they too felt surely this war was akin to ‘two bald men arguing over a comb’? And these were the ones favourable to Britain. On the evening of the invasion, Jeane Kirkpatrick, then US ambassador to the UN, cheerfully went off to dinner at the Argentine embassy in Washington. As Sir John Nott, Britain’s defence secretary during the war, has just concluded in his autobiography The United States [...] did not wish to choose between Britain and their interests in Latin America. Indeed, apart from [Casper] Weinberger and the Pentagon, the Americans were very, very far from being on our side.

ARMITAGE: On the intelligence side, we had some very high-level intercepts, explaining exactly what the Belgrano was up to and what she was trying to do. Unfortunately these things were so very highly classified that it was not possible to make them public, and therefore we had this great fuss about which direction the Belgrano was heading when she was struck. But there was absolutely no doubt at all in our minds that she was a clear and immediate threat to the taskforce.
