Situated in the South Atlantic, the Falkland Islands lie between Latitude 51º and 53ºS and Longitude 57º and 62ºW - about the same latitude south as London lies north. They are 300 miles (483 km) from the South American mainland. The Falkland Islands comprise two main Islands (East and West Falkland) and some 700 smaller islands, a total land area of approximately 4,700 square miles (12,173 square km), comparable in area with Northern Ireland, but spread to a much greater extent. The distance from Stanley, on the extreme east, to New Island, on the extreme west, is some 148 miles (238 km).
The coastline is deeply indented and affords many good anchorages. There are no major inland waters. Topographically the Islands are generally hilly with the highest point being Mount Usborne at 2,312 ft (705m) in East Falkland and Mount Adam at 2,297 ft (700m) in West Falkland. Most of the uplands are comparatively bare of vegetation, being of eroded peat, scree and stone runs ('rivers' of angular quartzite boulders).
Because of the climate there are few trees, the natural vegetation being grassland, with some species of heath and dwarf shrubs. Bird and marine mammal life, such as geese, penguins, seabirds and seals, are diverse and relatively unspoiled. There are no native land animals. Legislation provides for the protection of most birds and certain mammals and for the establishment of some islands as wildlife sanctuaries and reserves.

The two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland are surrounded by 700 islet
The coasts are extremely indented and provide numerous anchoring places for boats. Sheltered creeks , l ong beaches of white sand and steep cliffs offer visitors very varied panoramas.
The land is basically made up of meadows and moors . Numerous streams ponds and lakes , most of which are not very deep, give life to a dry and rather forbidding countryside
Topographically speaking, the isles are generally cut by valleys with the highest point being Mount Usborne, at 705 metres, on the eastern isle and Mount Adam at 700 metres height, on the western isle. The slopes are often covered with fields of stones probably due to the collapsing of mountain summits, thousands of years ago. The presence of strange in certain parts is still today a mystery.

They are administered as a largely self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom (UK) from Port Stanley , also known as Stanley, the capital and largest city, on East Falkland. Argentina also claims the islands, calling them by their Spanish name, Islas Malvinas (similarly calling the capital Puerto Argentino ), and considers them part of the Tierra del Fuego Province . The islands appear on every Argentine map, in Argentine weather forecasts, and even some tour guides to Argentina. Argentina launched an attack in and successfully occupied the islands. Under British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher , the British sent a fleet and, in June, removed the Argentine army and navy from the islands and their vicinity. This conflict is called the

The colony was turned over to Spain two years later and the islands have since been the subject of a territorial dispute, first between Britain and Spain, then between Britain and Argentina. The UK asserted its claim to the islands by establishing a naval garrison there in 1833. Argentina invaded the islands on 2 April 1982. The British responded with an expeditionary force that landed seven weeks later and after fierce fighting forced Argentine surrender on 14 June 1982. Islas Malvinas, officially Colony of the Falkland Islands, group of islands (1991 pop. 2,121), 4,618 sq mi (11,961 sq km), S Atlantic, c.300 mi (480 km) E of the Strait of Magellan. The islands are administered as a British crown colony with the capital at Stanley. There are two large islands (East Falkland and West Falkland) and some 200 small ones. From 1908 to 1985 South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands were dependencies of the colony. The Falklands are rather bleak, rocky moorlands, swept by wind and drenched by chill rain. The population is almost entirely British, Christian, and English-speaking. The islands are flourishing sheep-raising centers. The economy is dependent on the export of wool and the sale of Falkland Islands postage stamps and coins. Whales and seals abound in the littoral waters and formerly were heavily hunted. There are rich fishing grounds surrounding the islands and the government began selling licenses to foreign commercial fishing operations in 1987. Oil exploration around the islands began in the early 1990s.
