Great Bay Coast Watch Volunteers Discover
Toxic Algal Blooms
The volunteers of Great Bay Coast Watch (GBCW) Since June of 1999, GBCW volunteers have been sampling coastal waters to capture, examine, and identify the renegade single-celled algae that create these toxic blooms, whose presence may necessitate shutting down shellfish harvesting operations to protect public health. This spring, data collected by GBCW volunteers gave a heads-up about an emerging bloom to New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES) Shellfish Program

4-H Education Center at Auer Farm
The 4-H Education Center at Auer Farm is a private, non-profit education center located just minutes from Hartford, off Route 185 in Bloomfield. A partner with the University of Connecticut, College of Agriculture, the 4-H Education Center programs are based on current scientific research. This 120-acre farm provides valuable hands-on experiences to more than 18,000 children throughout the year. Seasonal programs are offered to school classes, community groups, and the public in the Center's animal barn, gardens, farmland and orchards. In this setting, students see cows, chickens, pigs and goats. They plant seeds, harvest apples, pick pumpkins, observe milking and make ice cream. Through interaction with educational staff, students learn how agricultural science affects everyday life. Lessons on biology, biotechnology, horticulture and math address content standards and expected performances in science. These are based on the Connecticut State Department of Education Core Science Curriculum Framework for students pre-K through high school. Programs encourage critical thinking and curiosity, while providing all the concrete hands-on discovery experiences essential to motivate and inspire scientific literacy.

Unfortunately, the 4H Farm closed on August 1, 1998. This Web site serves as a memory of this special place. The 4-H Farm at the University of California, Irvine is a cooperative farm that allowed children to learn to raise farm animals. The animals at the farm included: Some of the farm animals were raised for meat and are auctioned at the The Orange County Fair each July. Others were raised for companionship. There's more to 4H than just raising animals. Here are other projects that children are involved with: We also have information available about a number of topics: A quick jump to the pictures, sounds, and movies

13763 Hwy. 903 - PO Box 37 - Halifax, NC 27839 - 252-583-1821 Our History The 4-H Rural Life Center was originally built by Halifax County in 1923 to be used as the County Home. In the mid 1950's, it was changed to a rest home where it remained in use until the early 1970's. Once the rest home closed, the center remained vacant until the early to mid 1980's when the Cooperative Extension Service decided to make it their 4-H Camp. After much work and renovation, it is today the 4-H Rural Life Center. Bringing People Together The 4-H Rural Life Center is used year round, under the leadership of Director Joe Long , a 1986 graduate of The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and a 1982 graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School. Programming includes the Summer 4-H and Youth Day Camp, Halifax County Harvest Days, rodeos, Senior Citizens Day Camp, Pre-School Nutrition Camps, Seminars on Civil War History, craft classes, and cooking classes, just to name a few. The purpose of this programming is to bring the citizens, youth and adults, of Halifax County together to enhance, enlighten, and educate their everyday lives. Funding for the Center is provided through a cooperative effort between the Halifax County Commissioners, Cooperative Extension Service, local businesses and volunteers. National 4-H Congress is the flagship event of the 4-H program. For eighty years, youth from the United States and its territories have participated in this youth leadership development conference. The Congress provides youth, ages 14-19, a quality, educational, and cross-cultural experience that exceeds what any state independently provides. It is designed to address the needs and issues of youth while helping to develop capable, competent, and caring citizens. The program is built upon the Cooperative Extension System's belief that young people can be significant partners in addressing the issues that face our nation especially those affecting youth. Each year a National Design Team of Extension educators, 4-H youth, and 4-H adult volunteers analyze current youth issues and determine the most effective ways to address them. The program combines plenary sessions, seminars, discussion groups, and a service learning experience. The nation's most outstanding community leaders, speakers, and educators present the most current and timely information available. Feeding the Hungry Grant
Welcome

WELCOME to Fairfax County 4-H 's 2001 Feeding the Hungry website!
Here you'll find information on activities generously funded by a grant from Kraft Foods, Inc. through the National 4-H Council as well as resources you can use to make a difference in your community.
Fairfax County 4-H has much experience in helping to alleviate hunger. We have gleaned USDA fields in cooperation with Food for Others, collected donations of canned foods, volunteered at local shelters, and made sandwiches for the hungry. The grant allows us to expand these efforts and to create new initiatives, such as CAN-Struction
Please visit our Photo Album to see the Power of YOUth, including the Sandwiches for Shelters project held during National 4-H Week and CAN-Struction at the Fairfax County 4-H Fair, where visitors donated more than a ton of food for the Northern Virginia Branch of the Capital Area Foodbank.
Our thanks to everyone who has helped make this grant a success.
