History of 4-H The history of 4-H is a diverse and interesting picture. It is impossible to highlight every event of the past one hundred years, however we have posted a collection of significant events. The original concept for this site was created by 4-H'ers who were members of the Centennial Consulting Group at the 1999 National 4-H Conference. See a video about 4-H history. Selection of Events We used surveys to determine the most important events in 4-H history beginning in November, 2000 with the first decade, the Early Beginnings of 4-H - 1902-1912, and ending with the tenth decade, 4-H in a New Millennium to "Make the Best Better" 1993 - 2002, in December, 2001.The important 4-H events of each decade were selected by 4-H'ers, 4-H staff, volunteers, alumni, and others.

Showing Sheep as a 4-H Project Jason Kilmer
Jamie Gardner
Tracey Ramsey Intended Audience The 4-H sheep project is intended for those individuals who are interested in showing sheep. There is not a need for previous sheep experience, just a willingness to learn more about sheep in general. These projects are intended to give an individual a chance to follow their special interest as well as explore new ones in the sheep industry. In the end the project will hopefully serve as a learn experience for the individual, one that can be taken away and applied in the real world. Membership is typically open to all youth ages from 5-19 who meet certain membership guidelines. What is 4-H? 4-H is the largest youth serving organization in the world. It began in rural America but has spread to major urban centers, suburban communities, and rural non-farm settings. The fact is that all 50 states have 4-H programs and more than 80 countries worldwide are now involved in the activity. It is a project designated for both boys and girls with many different projects areas such as large or small animal, foods, clothing, wood science, horticulture etc. 4-H is not just an individual project but actually has family involvement. Typically youth are enrolled as members, but other family members are involved as club leaders, help with meetings, or head projects. Families work together to fulfill projects as they learn together.

Behind the scenes of the 4-H experiences, there is a new experience. Cloverbud advisor Karen Walker told me about it after our June 8th meeting. The cloverbuds made exercise batons and telescopes. They also discussed different activities and whether they were resting or active activities. They took their resting pulse in their neck. They then jumped up and down for 20 seconds and took their pulse again to see the difference between the pulses. They concluded that the activity made their heart work and it was a good exercise. More next time Different cloverbud activities - making pinwheels - Planting flowers - making flags - making exercise batons -making telescopes Goal of Cloverbuds - help younger members learn about themselves and their environment in a fun way Important dates in the upcoming months March 24 ~ 4-H Horse Council Meeting, 6:30 @ Fairgrounds
