Printer-friendly version of complete topic When Captain Cook was exploring the east coast of Australia, he had with him a very talented young botanist, Joseph Banks. Banks quickly realised that he was observing thousands of plant species that were obviously unique. He and Cook went home excited by all the different plants and animals they had seen during the expedition. Soon the whole of Europe was talking and speculating about the strange flora and fauna of Terra Australis. Since then hundreds of species have become extinct in Australia, including at least 41 bird and mammal species and more than 100 plant species. It is likely that other species have disappeared too, without our knowledge ( Box 1 Biologists have now listed all those plants and animals that they know are at risk of extinction in Australia. These are called endangered species. The list includes 10 species of fish, 12 frogs, 13 reptiles, 32 birds, 33 mammals and 209 plants. In addition, there are many more species that are listed as

Threatened and Endangered Species The Endangered Species Act
The Endangered Species Act (ESA) is a federal law designed to protect species in danger of extinction. The stated purposes of the Endangered Species Act are to "provide a means whereby the ecosystems upon which endangered species and threatened species depend may be conserved, (and) to provide a program for (their) conservation." Once a species is listed as endangered or threatened it is protected by a number of rules and regulations. Under the ESA, it is illegal to "harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, trap, capture, collect, or attempt to engage in any such conduct" with regard to an endangered or threatened species. In addition, the body parts and products of endangered or threatened species cannot be imported, exported, or sold. Threatened species have low or declining population numbers. Their populations are facing serious problems. The Endangered Species Act of 1973 defines a threatened species as one that is likely to become an endangered species within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range if factors contributing to their population decline or habitat degradation or loss continue. Endangered species are still alive today but exist in numbers so low or are decreasing so rapidly that they are in immediate danger of extinction. The Endangered Species Act of 1973 defines an

The mere physical boundaries of a National Park do not guarantee a species survival. Nowhere is man's impact on other species more evident than in south Florida. Threatened, endangered and extinct are words that have become all too common in our 20th century vocabulary. The natural process of species evolution, taking hundreds and thousands of years, has accelerated rapidly since the turn of the century. Today because of man's desire for land and raw materials, his continued pollution and indiscriminate hunting many plant and wildlife species are on the brink of extinction. Drainage of wetlands, alteration of overland water flow and hunting have all contributed to species decline. The Everglades, once known for its abundant bird life, has seen its wading bird population decline drastically since the turn of the century. The Florida Panther once common throughout the state, today is on the verge of extinction. Within the four National Park areas of Everglades National Park, Biscayne National Park, Big Cypress National Preserve and Fort Jefferson National Monument there are 16 endangered and 6 threatened wildlife species. The mere physical boundaries of a National Park do not guarantee a species survival. Maintaining harmony between "20th century progress" and wilderness areas requires research, legislation and public awareness. For the last decade the South Florida Research Center, Everglades National Park, has been studying how changes occurring outside the parks influence the fragile areas within their boundaries. Research going on today may lead to a brighter future for many species.

Species that receive protection under the ESA are classified into two categories, "Endangered" or "Threatened," depending on their status (how many are left in the wild) and how severely their survival is threatened. A species that is listed as Endangered is in danger of becoming extinct throughout a significant portion of its habitat range (the areas where it lives). Threatened species are those that are likely to become Endangered in the foreseeable future. How does a species get "listed?" How are listed species protected? The Endangered Species Act outlines a number of protective measures that are designed to preserve species that have been listed as Endangered or Threatened. These measures include restrictions on hunting, transporting and trading (buying and selling) the species. Also, the USFWS is authorized to develop recovery plans for Endangered and Threatened species, which outline the steps that need to be taken for the species to recover and eventually be removed from the ESA. How many species are protected by the Endangered Species Act?

Threatened species and ecological communities
Australia is home to more than one million species, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. About 85 per cent of flowering plants, 84 per cent of mammals, more than 45 per cent of birds, and 89 per cent of inshore, temperate-zone fish are endemic - that is they are only found in Australia. Changes to the landscape and native habitat as a result of human activity has put many of these unique species at risk. Over the last two hundred years many species of plants and animals have become extinct. For the other species of plants and animals whose survival is threatened a range of management and conservation measures are in place. The Australian Government is working in partnership with state, territory and local governments, non-government organisations, tertiary institutions and community groups to ensure the protection of our native species.

Extinct Species
Of the 1,676 species on the Lists of Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants (as of November 30, 1997), seven have been delisted due to extinction. Four
of these species the Tecopa pupfish, longjaw cisco, blue pike, and Santa Barbara song sparrow were protected under laws pre-dating the ESA, and therefore
were automatically listed under the ESA when it passed in 1973. They were apparently already extinct by 1973, however. Tecopa pupfish . The Tecopa pupfish (Cyprinodon nevaensis) was first described in 1948 from the outflow streams of the north and south Tecopa Hot Springs,
north of Tecopa, California. In 1970, the declining Tecopa pupfish population was listed on both the federal and California endangered species lists due to habitat
alteration and introductions of exotic species, primarily bluegill sunfish and mosquito fish. By 1972, the species no longer occurred where the species was first found.
Surveys done in 1977 failed to locate any other populations. In 1982, the FWS determined the Tecopa pupflsh was extinct and removed it from the endangered
species list (47 FR 2317).

Florida Forestry Information Threatened and Endangered Species Species judged as threatened or endangered are listed by state, federal, and international agencies as well as by some private organizations. Threatened and endangered species reach their status because of one or more of five factors:
Natural Causes Extinction is recognized as a natural biological process consistent with the concepts of evolution. Based on fossil records, birds have a mean species lifespan of about 2 million years, while mammals have a mean species lifespan of about 600,000 years. Extinction by natural causes may mean the actual death of a species or the evolution of the species into one or more new forms. Overspecialization, competition, sudden climatic change, or catastrophic events such as earthquakes or volcanic eruptions are natural causes of species' death. Introduced Exotic Predators Introduction of exotic species to ecosystems often disrupts natural systems, especially when a predator is introduced. Native species are seldom adapted to handle these often devastating components of their environment. Sometimes predators are introduced to control another exotic species, thus compounding the biological effects on the system. Exotic predators will inevitably turn to native fauna or flora in search of food. Nonpredatory Exotics Nonpredatory exotics are often agents of competition and/or disease. Other effects may also be attributed to their introduction.

H ave you ever asked one of these questions about threatened and endangered species?
What are threatened and endangered species? I wouldn't know an endangered species if I stepped on one; how am I supposed to know if I have one on my property? Isn't the process of extinction natural? How can I enhance my property to support an endangered or threatened species? Will management of my property be regulated if I have an endangered species on it? What is the roll of Federal and State Agencies in the management of threatened and endangered species? What can I do to help? What is an endangered or threatened species?
The Endangered Species Act of 1973 defines "endangered" as "any species which is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range." "Threatened" is defined as "any species which is likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range."
Why do species become endangered?

36. About The Endangered Species Act
What do the categories extinct , endangered , and threatened mean? extinct =A species that once lived on earth and no longer does.
http://www.pacificbio.org/ESIN/Infopages/AboutESA.html
About the Endangered Species Act Overview: How is a species listed?: For a species to be listed at any level, there must be a status review of the species population and habitat. This extensive scientific analysis, which is performed by either the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), State Departments of Fish and Wildlife, or the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), is then taken into consideration for any proposed listing. Once a species is listed: What do the categories "extinct", "endangered", and "threatened" mean? Extinct A species that once lived on earth and no longer does. These populations are considered to be of history and are gone forever. Although currently, the term extinction holds many negative connotations, extinction is nothing new. In fact, extinction is apart of life and has been occurring since life began on Earth. However, today extinction is considered to be occurring at alarmingly fast rates. Endangered The Endangered Species Act of 1973 defines an endangered species as any plant or animal species that is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range. In other words, these are populations which are still alive today but exist in numbers so low or are decreasing so rapidly that they are in immediate danger of extinction. Threatened = The Endangered Species Act of 1973 defines a threatened species as one that is likely to become an endangered species within the foreseeable future throughout all or a significant portion of its range if factors contributing to their population decline or habitat degradation or loss continue. In other words, this is a species populations which has been in decline and unless some type of protective measures are put into place, this species will be Endanger (in danger) of becoming extinct.

It is known that 23 mammals, 2 birds and 26 plants are presumed to have become extinct in South Australia since European settlement. A review of the official listing of threatened species in South Australia (the Threatened Species Schedules of the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 ) was completed in 2000, the first review since 1991. This review has resulted in an increase in the total number of threatened species occurring in South Australia from 778 in 1991 to 1041 in 2000.1 The 2000 Schedule has undergone review and updated schedules will be in place by 2004. Freshwater fish have been included in the schedules for the first time. Table 5.25: Species listed as threatened in South Australia - 2000
