A photograph from the Royal Geographical Society shows explorer Ernest Shackleton's ship, the Endurance, stuck on ice during his Imperial Trans-Atlantic Expedition of 1914-1918. Over two million items from Britain's "golden age" of exploration will be opened to the public next week.
By By Jill Lawless LONDON - There's Charles Darwin's sextant, Edmund Hillary's oxygen canister and Dr. Livingstone's hat. They are among artifacts, available to the public for the first time, from the archives of the Royal Geographical Society , the 174-year-old British institution that sent explorers to the South Pole, up Mount Everest and in search of the source of the Nile - and amassed one of the world's largest geographical archives. The London-based society will open next week an airy extension to its Victorian headquarters housing 2 million records - maps, charts, books and photographs. Society director Rita Gardner said Wednesday that the six-year, $13 million project had moved the documents from "Dickensian conditions" in the building's basement to climate-controlled rooms in the new wing.

They pushed back the frontiers of man’s knowledge of the world by their vision, courage and sheer doggedness. They were very different people – from bold adventurers facing the unknown with enjoyment to careful, more scientific individuals. Their journeys are placed within their historical context, but also contain the words of the men themselves. Format: CD tape Quantity:

Review

Ruin Explorers looks like more good dumb fantasy fun, but that's not actually being fair to the series; it's really more like Slayers shifted one notch toward the non-silly end of the spectrum. Where slayers has really dumb jokes, then fairly serious plot at the end of each story arc, Ruin Explorers started light, then built to an end that was essentially straight fantasy, and a bit grim at that. Essentially, the first two episodes were a light comedy more in the vein of Oh My Goddess! and You're Under Arrest! than the really silly stuff in Slayers, or the sleazy stuff in Bastard!! (wow, look at all the exclamation points in those titles...), and the second half was more Record of Lodoss Wars than anything else. (Digression while I'm on the topic of other fantasy series: have you ever noticed that in just about every anime fantasy, the size of the shoulder plates on a character's armor is directly proportional to either their strength or their significance to the plotyou look; Linna Inverse, Irhie, that punk from Lodoss Wars, they all have really huge shoulder pads. Weak or minor characters, on the other hand, always have deficient shoulder platesheck, maybe that's why they're weak (ever noticed that the burly magic armor always has really huge shoulders? Hmm?). Ok, I'm done... sorry about that.) In a way, this story in this particular shoulder-fest was a lot more of a story than it could have been; the characters (despite their rather silly quirks) were relatively straight, and their quest was nothing to laugh at, nor did they try. By the end, in part due to some backstory that felt like more than just an afterthought or hollow reason for swordswinging, things had developed into a respectable, if not very original, fantasy quest. Actually, even on the count of originality it doesn't fare that badlythere was a twist or two (mostly at the very end) that wasn't as obvious as I was expecting.

by Evan Hadingham
In 1999, New York Times journalist Nicholas D. Kristof reported a surprising encounter on a tiny African island called Pate, just off the coast of Kenya. Here, in a village of stone huts set amongst dense mangrove trees, Kristof met a number of elderly men who told him that they were descendants of Chinese sailors, shipwrecked on Pate many centuries ago. Their ancestors had traded with the local Africans, who had given them giraffes to take back to China; then their boat was driven onto the nearby reef. Kristof noted many clues that seemed to confirm the islanders' tale, including their vaguely Asian appearance and the presence of antique porcelain heirlooms in their homes.
If Kristof's supposition is correct, then this remote African outpost retains an echo of one of history's most astonishing episodes of maritime exploration.
Six centuries ago, a mighty armada of Chinese ships crossed the China Sea, then ventured west to Ceylon, Arabia, and East Africa. The fleet consisted of giant nine-masted junks, escorted by dozens of supply ships, water tankers, transports for cavalry horses, and patrol boats. The armada's crew totaled more than 27,000 sailors and soldiers. The largest of the junks were said to be over 400 feet long and 150 feet wide. (The

Researchers carefully measure and photograph the 4,500-year-old footprints of Native American explorers in a Tennessee cave.
The talk was the first in the spring World Explorations series sponsored by the Museum of Anthropology. The series is designed so experts conducting research in various places around the world can present their findings in a format that anyone can enjoy.
Willey discussed the remarkable feat of the Native Americans who explored the back portion of a cave in north central Tennessee that holds a complex network of more than eight miles of mapped passages. The front portion of the cave is well known, but the back portion has an opening high above a muddy and slimy talus slope that can be reached only on hands and knees.
The modern explorers of 1976 thought they were discovering a virgin passage until they came to a short, side passage about a quarter of a mile long and found human footprints. Prehistoric explorers had used cane torches (a river cane is native to the area) as their only light. Charcoal from the torches was carbon dated by researchers from Washington University in St. Louis. It is the earliest known cave exploration in that area of the United States.

Explorers give years, lives discovering harsh world
By ERNIE MASTROIANNI
of the Journal Sentinel staff Last Updated: Jan. 7, 2001 For most of recorded history, Antarctica was a question mark on world maps. Formidable barriers of sea ice and the world's stormiest seas kept all but the hardiest of mariners away. The famed English explorer James Cook circumnavigated what is now known as the Southern Ocean in trips made between 1772 and 1775, encountering vast reaches of sea ice but no land. But the presence of impenetrable ice led him to surmise that there must be a continent to the south. Crossing the Southern Ocean and spotting the Antarctic land mass did not happen until the early 1820s, when the lure of profit drew commercial whalers and seal hunters. They were the continent's first visitors, mostly along the Antarctic Peninsula.
