New World Disorder
A Review of Explorers of the New World
John Butterfield Explorers of the New World, a feature-laden if one-sided exploration of the European journeys through North and South America, promises a multimedia investigation of the travels, findings and impact of age of discovery. It's said that history is written by the winners. So is this CD-ROM. That's its biggest problem. Because in this case the winners annihilated cultures while they amassed credits in the history books. Explorers of the New World makes a token effort to acknowledge the devastation, but effort is so timid and shallow that it ends up more insulting than illuminating. A more balanced portrayal not only would have been more historically accurate; it also would have added drama and intensity to what should be a sweeping tale of adventure, tragedy, greed, envy and courage. Instead, we get short, shallow McNuggets of information, gussied up with technological bells and whistles. Technically impressive bells and whistles, though. Future Vision Multimedia incorporates a well-thought-out, well-illustrated interface to introduce viewers to the adventurers who ransacked and reconnoitered the Americas from 1492 to the early 1600s. After an introduction touting the excitement and adventure to follow (mercifully skippable on return visits), the viewer finds a landscape peopled with costumed figures, and a few standard navigation tools: a compass (onscreen through all scenes) to jump from section to section; a timeline; a searchable database of explorers; a guided tour(nicely done) to explain maneuvering through the disk; and "Impact" a look at how items from Europe (cattle, smallpox) affected the Americas and (coffee, turkeys) vice versa.

CUETZALAN, Mexico (CNN) British Royal Navy divers have led to safety all six explorers trapped in a warren of caves in eastern Mexico. But Mexican officials, angry that they were not informed of the British explorers' expedition, detained the rescued men while questions over their visas are sorted out. Among the cavers were four members of the British navy. Over several hours Thursday night, the men swam out of the cave one at a time. They had been trapped in the flooded cave for a week. Each emerged in apparent good health and spirits, officials said.

This virtual exhibit from the US Library of Congress addresses the following questions: What was life like in the Western Hemisphere and the Mediterranean before 1492? What spurred European expansion? How did European, African and American peoples react to each other? What were some of the immediate results of these contacts? The exhibit also examines the first sustained contacts between American people and European explorers, conquerors and settlers from 1492 to 1600.

Renaissance Explorers Some men were drawn to the seas out of a curiosity to discover more about the world. One such man was Prince Henry of Portugal, known as Prince Henry the Navigator. With the help of mathematicians, astronomers, cartographers, and other navigators, Prince Henry sent expeditions to explore the west coast of Africa. These explorations led to trade for gold and ivory and, soon after, slaves. Later, Portuguese sailors discovered the route around the southern tip of Africa that would take them to India entirely by sea. From The Western Tradition series.

Review: Explorers of the New World
by Robert Madill, Product Information Distributed by Softkey International Inc. Web: http://www.softkey.com/ One Antnenaeum Street Cambridge, Mass 02142 Street Price: $39.95 System Requirements Mac with 68030 25 MHz or better processor Minimum 8 MB RAM Minimum 13" monitor with 256 colors System 7.1 or later By sheer coincidence, several months ago I chose to review the multimedia CD-ROM entitled: Explorers of the New World without remembering that here, in Canada, we were about to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the landing of John Cabot and his ship, the Matthew, on our east coast. This CD, issued by SoftKey Multimedia Inc Subjects range from entertaining trivia to fascinating historical information. The "Navigational Instruments" icon in the Columbus story has an adequate discussion of the instruments and methods whereby the early ocean sailors managed journeys on the open seas. Their use of the quadrant, compass, and "dead reckoning" for navigation would amaze travelers of our century who are accustomed to pinpoint radar positioning. For Columbus and his contemporaries, reckoning wrong meant that the phrase "dead reckoning" could (and often did) take on a literal meaning!

THE GREAT AGE OF EXPLORATION HOME SITE INDEX CATAMARAN HULL SOLAR PANELS ... GOODIES Circumnavigating the globe is nothing new. Man has been exploring the oceans of the world for hundreds of years. As explorers ventured farther seeking knowledge and wealth and boats became faster and more reliable a successful circumnavigation became inevitable. As technology improved ships were scheduled not only for cargo but passages were possible. Cargo could be delivered on time and cheaper than before. Luxury passenger cruises followed. All of this was only possible because of the successes of the early explorers and marine architects. This period of discovery is known as the Great Age of Exploration. Solar Navigator heralds a new age of technological discovery aiming to prove electric passages can be a reality. Sir Ernest Shackleton - Antarctic explorer
After Captain Scott died during an attempt to reach the South Pole in 1912, Sir Ernest Shackleton (1874–1922) chose to tackle the challenge of Antarctica in a different way. He decided he would attempt to journey across the icy continent from one side to the other via the South Pole.

*Herodotus also notes that the feat of circumnavigation of Africa was soon duplicated by the Carthaginians. Phoenician sailors set out from their homeland on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean to trade, explore and to found colonies. They had competition from the Greeks, but managed to set colonies on most of the islands in the Mediterranean, along the north coast of Africa (including one named Carthago, Carchedon to the Greeks, or Carthage - from the punic Qart-Hadasht meaning "New Town") and along the coast of Spain (then called Iberia by the Greeks). They built small trading settlements through the Sahara desert and scattered through the middle east. They were able to navigate by the stars, unlike their Greek and Roman counterparts who without any compass were forced to sail within sight of land at all times.

8th Grade Explorers of the New World Projects The 8th Grade Social Studies class studied the early explorers who came to America from various other countries. Their web projects reflect the research they conducted into the personal background, goals, ships and supplies, route, hardships encountered, time frame and results. Using AppleWorks, students designed and constructed their web pages. In doing this, students reviewed basic HTML commands they learned as 7th graders. These web sites feature the results of the research and at least one graphic of the explorer. Students worked in pairs, sharing the research and web page responsibilities. Marquette and Joliet
