Spring flowers are popping out all over the Illinois clubhouse as we finish this issue of World Explorer. With spring upon the northern hemisphere, we are getting ready for the visitors who pass through the various WEX clubhouses around the world.
Jennifer and I have just returned from London, and the temporary WEX offices there. Things are happening on the WEX front in England, with a new WEX-Adventures Unlimited affiliated bookstore now open in Glastonbury. Called The Speaking Tree, it is located on the High Street next to the Glastonbury Abbey in the middle of town. Glastonbury is a small town, but it is rich in Arthurian lore; it also includes the mysterious Glastonbury Tor and was said to have been the second home of the Biblical Joseph of Arimathea.
Travels in Europe included trips to Wales and Scotland, where we saw the Stone of Destiny which is now kept in the Royal Scottish Museum, and to France and Spain to visit the unusual Basque areas of the Pyranees. We visited the strange alchemical cross at Hendaye in the French Basque area and stayed for several days at a bed and breakfast in the Spanish Basque town of San Sebastian. San Sebastian is where the popular Spanish cuisine of tapas originated, which the Basque call pinxo.
We are planning our next big WEX trip for later this year or early next year. Currently, we are planning expeditions to Tula and Acambaro near Mexico City. Give the WEX headquarters a call if you are interested or have some suggestions! For the latest information

The French Come to the New World Giovanni da Verranzano
In 1524 Verranzano explored the New World for France. He searched for a route to the Indies through the continent. Verranzano sailed up and down the East Coast of America looking for a passage that would take him further west. He could not find one so he returned to France. Back to Chart Jacques Cartier
In 1534 Cartier tried to find a sea passage to the East Indies through North America. He could not find a river that would take ships west from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean. Instead he discovered the St. Lawrence River. The St. Lawrence River ended much sooner than Cartier expected. It ended on a high hill which Cartier named Mont Real or King's Mountain in honor of the King of France. Mont Real later became Montreal. Cartier named the area New France and claimed it in the name of the King of France. This discovery opened Canada for Europeans wanting to settle in North America. Cartier took colonists to Cape Rouge near Quebec. The colony was a failure. After this France lost interest in Canada. It would be more than 70 years before another Frenchman came to the mouth of the St. Lawrence River. Back to Chart Samuel de Champlain
In 1608 Champlain brought a group of settlers to the area around Montreal. They built a fort and a settlement. Champlain sent out traders to buy furs from the Indians. Champlain made friends with the Hurons. He brought missionaries to live with the Indians. These missionaries built churches. Champlain explored the Great Lakes and discovered Lake Champlain. Champlain was the first to systematically investigate the eastern shores of Canada and the New England coast.

The Spanish Come to the New World Vasco Nùñez de Balboa
Balboa led an expedition across Panama looking for gold, but discovered the Pacific Ocean instead. It took 24 days for his group of 190 Spaniards and 1000 natives to cross the 45 miles of jungle. On September 29, 1513 they reached the Pacific Ocean and claimed all the land that touched the Pacific Ocean for Spain. Back to Chart Hernando Cortez
Cortez was a young Spaniard who went to Cuba to find his fortune. He heard stories of gold in Mexico and South America. In 1519 Cortez left Cuba to find this gold. With 300 Aztecs to every one of Cortez's men the Spanish fought. After 3 battles the Indians gave up. They could not complete against the guns and horses. The Spaniards also wore metal armor. More than this the Indians were afraid of the "god-like" warriors. On November 8, 1519 Cortez reached Mexico City and was received by Montezuma, the Aztec emperor. Cortez captured Montezuma and began to rule the empire through him. The Spaniards made the Aztecs work in the mines looking for gold and silver. This gold and silver was shipped back to Spain. Back to Chart Francisco Coronado
Coronado commanded an expedition which left from western Mexico in 1540. He was searching for the Seven Golden Cities of Cibola. Coronado rode through northern Mexico and into what is now Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Coronado did not find any golden cities, but discovered the Pueblo Indians. Coronado was upset at not finding the cities of gold. He sent his men off in different directions with orders to find them. His men found the Grand Canyon instead. Coronado would not give up. He marched his army east. There he found the buffalo and grassy plains, but no cities of gold. Coronado claimed all the land over which he and his men had traveled in the name of Spain.

Discuss the effects of European exploration on the world's resources:
    • The Europeans desperately wanted two resources: spices and gold.
    • In pursuit of these resources, Europeans began exploring the coast of Africa and searching for a route to the Far East.
    • In time, efforts to find an inexpensive route to the Far East led explorers all around the world.
    • Along with gold and spices, the explorers found many other valuable resources. Unfortunately, they didn't always appreciate and take care of the things they found. Sometimes areas became overpopulated and the ecological balance was destroyed. Sometimes native people were killed for their gold or their land. Ask the class to name different resources found by the explorers. List them on the board: spices, gold, silver, land, forests and lumber, new fruits and vegetables, fish, plants, animals and furs, birds, rivers and waterways, Indian cultures, and so on. Print The Explorers' World of Resources activity sheet and make copies of the crossword puzzle for students. When students are finished, check the crossword together as a class. * To open, view, and print the activity sheet(s) you'll need a free copy of

Why Explorers Explored the World Explorer Timeline Games About Us ... Bibliography Join our expedition to the New World on the SS South Lyon... People have always explored. From the dawn of time through the new millennium, we have continued to discover what has previously been unknown. Thousands of years ago, the Native Americans came from Asia across the land bridge to a new world. They spent centuries exploring this new land and building new civilizations and empires. In the late 1400s, Europeans "discovered" this "New World" by accident while they were trying to find a shorter route to the Indies. Our website will introduce you to some of the great explorers that filled in the map with lands that were previously unknown to Europeans. You will learn about why they sailed, where they sailed, what they found, and how they treated each other and the people that they met. Begin your exploration along one of two routes recently discovered. The first route takes you through an introduction to why Europeans explored during the Age of Exploration, then you can choose famous explorers by the country they sailed for. The second route is for the more experienced explorer that is ready to hop on board. On this route, you can go directly to our explorer timeline and choose from a list of famous explorers.

    Age of European Exploration
  • Introduction to the Age of Exploration
In the early fifteenth century, the sea-faring nations of Europe were poised to expand their influence in the rest of the world by a program of sustained and systematic exploration. In some cases, exploration was fanned by the quest of knowledge about the world in which Europeans lived, for others, the motive was profit. Still others justified their actions as the logical extension of the Crusades of Christianity against Islam.
  • Life at Sea in the Age of Sail
Over a period of hundreds of years, seafarers from the age of the early explorers to the time of the Battle of Trafalgar shared many common experiences. Men working at sea had much to endure. Cut off from normal life on shore for months, even years, they had to accept cramped conditions, disease and poor food and pay. Above all they faced the daily dangers of sea and weather.
  • Introduction to the Age of Exploration
The desire to explore the unknown has been a driving force in human history since the dawn of time. From the earliestdocumented accounts, ancient civilizations have explored the earth by sea. Early adventurers were motivated by religious beliefs, the desire forconquest, the need to establish trade routes, and hunger for gold.

This week, Education World delivers a shipload of sites and activities guaranteed to keep your lessons afloat and your curriculum current. Editor's note: For additional "explorer" resources, be sure to check out this week's CURRICULUM story, Across the Sea: Europeans Explore the New World Students, perhaps distracted by the October 12 school holiday, often forget that Christopher Columbus wasn't the only explorer who sailed into uncharted seas to find an unknown land. They may not even realize that he wasn't even the first of those adventurers to set foot in the New World. Historians believe Leif Erikson, an Icelander, was the first European to arrive in North America, landing in what is now Canada in 1001. Then why is Columbus so widely-known and celebrated and Erikson so often ignored or forgotten? Pose the question before you begin exploring "Explorer" Web sites. Students should be able to answer that question and many more at the end of their online voyages.
