186. Antarctic Explorers: James Cook
Biography of the explorer with details of his Southern Ocean voyages.
http://www.south-pole.com/p0000071.htm

James Cook
James Cook was born in the Yorkshire village of Marton on October 27, 1728. His first experience at sea came at the age of 18 when he signed on as a deckhand aboard a Whitby collier carrying coal to London. He became an accomplished mathematician in his spare time and was actually offered a command of his own ship but refused and joined the Royal Navy as a seaman. His talents were soon recognized and after two years he became master of his own ship, the PEMBROKE , and was ordered to chart the waters of the St. Lawrence River in Canada. His work was masterful and the Admiralty recalled him to England and placed him in command of the ENDEAVOUR which was to take a number of scientists to the Pacific Ocean for observance of Venus. The ENDEAVOUR departed England in 1768 and after visiting Tahiti the following year he discovered New Zealand and claimed it for Great Britain. Sailing west, in 1770 he sighted the east coast of Australia. From here he sailed north and on August 22 he claimed the whole of eastern Australia as a British possession. The ENDEAVOUR returned to England in 1771 having added significantly to Britain's potential empire in the Pacific.

190. Antarctic Explorers: Roald Amundsen
Biography and detailed overview of Amundsen's expeditions.
http://www.south-pole.com/p0000101.htm
Roald Amundsen
Roald Amundsen, born in 1872 near Oslo, Norway, left his mark on the Heroic Era as one of the most successful polar explorers ever born. His career of adventure began at the age of 15, originally studying medicine, but dropping out to go to sea where he soon moved his way up to the rank of mate. His first experience in the Antarctic was with Adrien de Gerlache 's 1899 BELGICA EXPEDITION . He became the first to travel the Northwest Passage, in his ship Gjoa in 1903-06. After this expedition, plans were assembled to drift across the North Pole in Nansen's famous FRAM , but news arrived of Peary's successful attainment of the pole which caused Amundsen to make new plans covert plansfor an expedition to the Antarctic and the subsequent capture of the South Pole. On December 14, 1911, Amundsen and four others stood at the South Pole, a month before Robert Scott . This expedition was an incredible masterpiece of organization. Here is the story... "The North Pole is reached!" was the news that flashed all over the world...it was September 1909 when the news reached Amundsen. The original plan of the

193. Antarctic Explorers: Richard E. Byrd
Biography with details of Byrd's Antarctic expeditions.
http://www.south-pole.com/p0000107.htm
Richard E. Byrd
Richard Evelyn Byrd was born into a famous Virginia family in 1888. He entered the United States Naval Academy at the age of 20 and was commissioned in 1912. His passion for the airplane began during World War I when he learned to fly. Subsequently Byrd became a flying instructor for the US Navy. Significant credit must be given Byrd for the present American interest in the south polar regions. His success as a naval aviator and transatlantic flier, along with the North Pole flyover, instilled enough confidence in the public to make them financially assist in the support of his first two Antarctic expeditions. From Byrd's first expedition in 1928-30 until 1955, eleven expeditions, excluding the WILKINS-HEARST EXPEDITION Roald Amundsen what his next plans would be. His response? "Fly over the South Pole". At this point Amundsen had no reason to doubt him and the only advice offered was to "take a good plane, take plenty of dogs and only the best men". With this as his background, Richard E. Byrd began the modern American assault on Antarctica. Byrd Antarctic Expedition I
The Byrd Expedition was the first American expedition to explore Antarctica since the U. S. Exploring Expedition under

HOME TIMELINE HALL of FAME LINKS ... BIBLIOGRAPHY MERIWETHER LEWIS (1774-1809)
WILLIAM CLARK (1770-1838)
Lewis and Clark led one of the most famous exploring expeditions ever. In the early 1800s, U.S. President Thomas Jefferson wanted to learn more about the land west of the Mississippi River. The United States had just purchased a huge area of land from the French. This land became known as the Louisiana Purchase, and the land stretched from the Mississippi River all the way to the Pacific Ocean. No Americans had explored that area yet. Jefferson chose Meriwether Lewis (top picture) to lead the expedition. Lewis was born on August 18, 1774. He served in the army and was neighbors with Thomas Jefferson. He also served President Jefferson as his personal secretary. William Clark (bottom picture) was picked to assist Lewis as his partner. He had military experience and was known as a good leader. He also had taken part in some explorations. On May 14, 1804 the famous expedition to the west began. They took canoes and a group of about 30 volunteers along the Missouri River to the west. Along the trip they met an Indian named Sacagawea, who served as an interpreter for Lewis and Clark. During their expedition they met many Indian tribes and greeted them with peace by giving gifts.
