Background Release
GENERAL ASSEMBLY SPECIAL SESSION ON CHILDREN TO EXPLORE CHALLENGES TO YOUTH DEVELOPMENT, CHILD RIGHTS, BEGINNING 8 MAY
The United Nations is set to renew its commitment to the world's children and adolescents as the General Assembly dedicates a landmark three-day special session to explore long-standing obstacles to young people's well-being and development, as well as new challenges to the promotion and protection of their rights.
Scheduled to take place in New York from 8 to 10 May, the special session will bring together over 70 heads of State and government, as well as non-governmental organizations (NGOs), children's advocates and children themselves.
The special session will also feature an unprecedented number of youths serving as representatives of their official delegations.  So far, 179 of the 300 young participants have registered as members of government delegations from 101 countries.  The remaining children are part of accredited NGO delegations. Many more young people are expected to sign up, forming an intriguing and youthful counterpoint to the heads of State and government that will attend the session, which originally had been scheduled for September 2001.
"It may seem like common sense to invite young people to a conference completely dedicated to their well-being.  But this is a radical change for such high-level meetings", said Carol Bellamy, Executive Director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).  "Children will literally be rubbing shoulders with presidents and prime ministers.  They will have a chance to voice their concerns and influence the debate."

Data from Deep Impact's instruments indicate an immense cloud of fine powdery material was released when the probe slammed into the nucleus of comet Tempel 1 at about 10 kilometers per second (6.3 miles per second or 23,000 miles per hour). The cloud indicated the comet is covered in the powdery stuff. The Deep Impact science team continues to wade through gigabytes of data collected during the July 4 encounter with the comet measuring 5-kilometers-wide by 11-kilometers-long (about 3-miles-wide by 7-miles-long).

Descriptive Maps From the 16th to the 18th century, the image of North America, in its actual lines and contours, emerged little by little on the maps of geographers. Innumerable European explorers, informed or guided by the Indians, traveling by sailboat, by canoe or on foot, documented the coasts, rivers, streams, plains, and mountains of the New World, contributing to this geographic knowledge. The French contribution to this vast exploratory impulse was immense. The French traversed the North Atlantic coast, the St. Lawrence Valley and the Great Lakes, the Mississippi Valley and the Great Plains, as well as part of the Pacific Coast. Whether from France or Canada, they did so for the service of God and King or for more personal goals, such as the desire for wealth or basic necessity, the search for glory, or a taste of liberty, curiosity, and a thirst for knowledge. As the explorations continued, knowledge of the territories and of natural resources became more refined, as did that of the customs of the natives, who revealed themselves as indispensable allies in this physical and conceptual conquest of the New World. From Champlain's map of 1632 , by Consul Willshire Butterfield, 1898. LC General Collections.
