General Resources
Internet Modern History Sourcebook (Paul Halsall, Fordham)
A huge and impressive archive of mostly primary material on modern European and American history, including much on the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries.
Documents in Military History (Dave Stewart, Hillsdale College)
Primary documents, many abridged, on Dettingen, Culloden, the American and French Revolutions, and miscellaneous military matters.
Current Value of Old Money (Roy Davies)
Pointers to information (on-line and in print) on the relative value of money through history. Very handy.
18th Century History: The Age of Reason and Change (Rick Brainard)
An attractive meta-site on C18 history, with a chronology, and extensive but miscellaneous original resources and links.
Chronologies
Eighteenth-Century Chronology (Jack Lynch, Rutgers)
An in-progress chronology on eighteenth-century world history, including literature, theatre, politics, science, religion, music, and art, from 1660 to 1800. Coverage is still spotty, and British culture is disproportionately represented.
The Romantic Chronology (UCSB)
A fine place to start on later eighteenth-century history. An extensive chronology with elaborate search capabilities:

Review: Explorers of the New World
by Robert Madill, Product Information Distributed by Softkey International Inc. Web: http://www.softkey.com/ One Antnenaeum Street Cambridge, Mass 02142 Street Price: $39.95 System Requirements Mac with 68030 25 MHz or better processor Minimum 8 MB RAM Minimum 13" monitor with 256 colors System 7.1 or later By sheer coincidence, several months ago I chose to review the multimedia CD-ROM entitled: Explorers of the New World without remembering that here, in Canada, we were about to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the landing of John Cabot and his ship, the Matthew, on our east coast. This CD, issued by SoftKey Multimedia Inc Subjects range from entertaining trivia to fascinating historical information. The "Navigational Instruments" icon in the Columbus story has an adequate discussion of the instruments and methods whereby the early ocean sailors managed journeys on the open seas. Their use of the quadrant, compass, and "dead reckoning" for navigation would amaze travelers of our century who are accustomed to pinpoint radar positioning. For Columbus and his contemporaries, reckoning wrong meant that the phrase "dead reckoning" could (and often did) take on a literal meaning!

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to find a chest full of treasures? L ong ago, when a sea captain set off on a voyage to a far away place, possibly never explored by humans before, he always kept a chest containing logs, maps, charts, and artifacts relating to his voyage. This chest was a treasured possession of the explorer. Its contents could be used to document his findings and help him in his quest for fame and fortune. Back to Top
