Click here to get an overview on why people went out into the world and risked their lives to 'explore'
STEP 2: Creating a Research Plan Using Inspiration create a Research Plan . Save a copy of your Research Plan on your desktop or hard drive in folder called "Explorers". You will use your Research Plan to take notes based on information you find during your research. You will also need to copy the url's of websites where you find useful information and images.

    18. Resources For The Study Of The Age Of Exploration
A brief page listing various Internet resources helpful in the study of world explorers and Discoverers. new York Macmillan Publishing Company, 1992.
    http://www.historyguide.org/earlymod/exploration.html
Resources for the Study of the Age of Exploration
There are a number of very good sources of online information regarding the Age of Exploration. An outstanding multimedia project, The European Voyages of Exploration , has been put together by the Applied History Research Group at the University of Calgary. For the student interested in general survey accounts the 1492 Exhibit is quite good. Andre Engels' Discoverers Web contains hundreds of links to further information and is an excellent place to start looking for hints to further online research. His page on primary sources is as outstanding as it is thorough. Richard Hooker has written a fine section of his general survey of western civilization called Discovery The Beginnings , and the Mariners' Museum at Newport News, Virginia, is excellent as well. On Columbus, check out Columbus and the Age of Discovery from Millersville University (Pennsylvania) and Keith A. Pickering's Columbus Navigation Home Page . Andre Engels has collected an extensive list of links on Christophorus Columbus . You can also read Dinesh D'Souza's 1995 article "The Crimes of Christopher Columbus."

Spanish Explorers: In Search Of ? A WebQuest for 5th Grade Question l Background Information l Tasks l Resources l Activities l Assessment Question Why did the Spanish explorers risk their lives to explore new lands? Background Information The age of exploration was driven by a combination of many forces. European countries had a variety of political, religious, and economic reasons to explore new lands. Individual explorers often shared some of the same motives as the nations they represented but often they had their own reasons for exploring. The Spanish conquistadors were one group of explorers who sailed for Spain. They explored the Americas during the first half of the 1500's. It was during this time that the Spanish dominated the settlement of the Americas. Task Imagine you are a conquistador on a ship sailing to the New World during the 16th century. You have decided to tell the members of your crew all about your hopes and dreams for the upcoming seafaring adventure. You must choose one of the explorers in the table below to research. Your expert knowledge of one of these daring men will uncover the answer to our question.

Students and teachers will find curricular resources (information, content...) to help them learn about this topic. In addition, there are also links to instructional materials (lesson plans) which will help teachers provide instruction in this theme. Please read our 1492: An Ongoing Voyage
This virtual exhibit from the US Library of Congress addresses the following questions: What was life like in the Western Hemisphere and the Mediterranean before 1492? What spurred European expansion? How did European, African and American peoples react to each other? What were some of the immediate results of these contacts? The exhibit also examines the first sustained contacts between American people and European explorers, conquerors and settlers from 1492 to 1600.
