Manuel Barbera's Web Resources Reference Guide.
Welcome to Manuel Barbera's Reference Guide to Corpora and Corpus-based Computational Linguistics Resources on the Web (more shortly CLR Guide There are about exhaustively annotated files. Descriptions as a rule are taken directly from the sites they refer to and are only slightly adapted or translated into English. Usually I put a particular stress on the kind of availability (conditions, costs etc.) of the resources. Besides providing istitutional and general references , these pages aim principally to gather information on specific languages , especially the "exotic" and lesser known ones. At the present time I have not yet systematically combed the data on the "major" European languages, and I have surely missed a lot of resources for "minor" languages as well (it is often hard to find them out). Now, however, languages are already represented, and it's only a start. References are given systematically only to text corpora , and not to speech (i.e. audio recordings) and dictionary (i.e. lexical database) corpora, which, as automatic translation pages as well, are reported only occasionally, if of particular interest. In the future, however, I hope to make a speech corpora section as well.

General Databases Invasive Species Databases organized alphabetically Invasive Species Database Global Invasive Species Database
Host : Invasive Species Specialist Group (ISSG); Global Invasive Species Programme (GISP)
Scope : It contains invasive species information supplied by expert contributors from around the world. The species range from micro-organisms to mammals and plants. The system notes the habitats that these species have invaded, using land cover classifications derived from global satellite imagery. It then produces a list of similar habitats around the world. This is intended to be an initial attempt at predicting where a species may invade. It has very broad scope with a greater focus on terrestrial invasive species than aquatic invasive species, although it does have a specific aquatic component which when fully developed will prove especially useful for management purposes, including predictive modelling. Database: Hawaiian Ecosystems at Risk (HEAR)
Host: U.S. Geological Survey; University of Hawai'i

Locating, Using, and Integrating Internet-Based Mathematics Materials
ISSUE : The Internet contains vast amounts of valuable and motivating mathematics resources for K-12 educators and students. However, educators often have difficulty locating, accessing, and meaningfully integrating these materials into their schools' mathematics curricula and using the materials in instructionally appropriate ways.

Dr. Offie Hobbs, principal at Madison Middle School 2000, discusses bringing the Internet and computers into the academic playing field.
Excerpted from Learning With Technology: Merging Onto the Information Highway , produced by NCREL in 1994. (Audio comment, 264K) A text transcript is available. However, the size, complexity, and technical language of the Internet often discourage people from using Internet resources in depth. Others have difficulty finding a way to connect. To make the job easier, several agencies have been created that help schools and districts connect to the Internet.

Chapter 5 - Content Advisor
This chapter describes the Microsoft® Internet Explorer Content Advisor, which allows you to rate the appropriateness of Web content and to control which Web sites your users can visit. This feature can help you create a more secure environment that protects your users from unsuitable content on the Internet.
Related Information in the Resource Kit
For more information about configuring security zones, see "Security Zones."  For more information about using the Internet Explorer Customization Wizard to preconfigure security settings, see "Running the Microsoft Internet Explorer Customization Wizard."  For more information about using the Internet Explorer Administration Kit (IEAK) Profile Manager to preconfigure security settings, see "Keeping Programs Updated."  Top of page
Using Content Advisor
Using Content Advisor, you can control the types of content that users access on the Internet. You can adjust the content ratings settings to reflect the appropriate level of content in four areas: language, nudity, sex, and violence. For example, businesses might want to block access to Web sites that offer no business value to their employees, and parents might want to block access to sites that display content inappropriate for their children. Historically, the motive for filtering sites on the basis of a site's content has been driven by a site's subject matter and the fact that some ideas and images are blatantly offensive to many people. In 1995, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Platform for Internet Content Selection (PICS) began to define an infrastructure that would encourage Web content providers to voluntarily rate their sites. This is done by using a specific set of HTML meta tags that rate the content of Web sites. Software programs can then block access to Web sites based upon the values of those meta tags. Today, the most common content ratings are based on the PICS standard for defining and rating Web content. For more information about PICS, visit the W3C Web site at

http://interactive2.usgs.gov/learningweb/explorer/topic_hazards_landslides.asp
TEXT VERSION
Landslides
- Text adapted from USGS Hazards: Landslides page Landslides are termed the sleeper of all the geologic hazards. Though incited by snowmelt, rain, poor excavation, or earthquakes, they sometimes startle the unsuspecting homeowner with the ferocity of their rapid movement, or the slow stretching of the once peaceful terrain. Landslides constitute a major geologic hazard because they are widespread, occurring in all 50 States, and cause $1-2 billion in damages and more than 25 fatalities on average each year. Landslides pose serious threats to highways and structures that support fisheries, tourism, timber harvesting, mining, and energy production, as well as general transportation. Landslides commonly occur with other major natural disasters, such as earthquakes and floods. They exacerbate relief and reconstruction efforts, and expanded development and other land use has increased the incidence of landslide disasters.
