  • The California Heritage Project is a digital archive containing photographs, pictures, and manuscripts from the collections of the Bancroft Library. Navigating through the huge collection takes some practice. Jump directly to the "Containers" to skip the documentation that goes with the images. One example of the material available is the collection of 38 pencil California Mission Sketches by Henry Miller in 1856.
  • The American Memory Collection from the Library of Congress has photographs, prints, documents, motion pictures, and sound recordings. No special viewers are needed for most print materials, though a TIFF viewer (available on-line) is needed to see the higher resolution formats provided for some photographs. Additional viewers are available for the sounds and movies. One example of the type of material available is the Letter from S. Shufelt, a gold miner writing to a cousin from Placerville, California, in October 1850.
  • SCORE's California: A Changing State has resources and activities by unit.

    General Randolph B. Marcy
Randolph B. Marcy was born at Greenwich, Massachusetts, April 9, 1812. He graduated at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1832 and was commissioned a lieutenant of the 5th U. S. Infantry, with which regiment he served through the Black Hawk and Mexican Wars. He was on garrison duty and exploration service in Texas and Oklahoma from 1849 to 1854. In 1861 he was appointed as Inspector General with the rank of colonel. He saw active service during the Civil War and in 1869, he became Inspector General of the U. S. Army with the rank of brigadier general. He retired from active service in 1881. He was the author of several interesting books on the west and western life. He died at Orange, New Jersey, November 22, 1887. Fort Arbuckle was established by Capt. R. B. Marcy, April 19, 1851, and finally abandoned June 24, 1870, when the establishment of Fort Sill rendered its further maintenance as a military post unnecessary.

    Chris Sherman
    ONLINE , January 2000
2000 Information Today, Inc. T here are a number of hybrid reference services on the Web that are something of a cross between a traditional database service and a Web search engine. They often feature proprietary content, and may also include links to other Web resources. All are either free or very inexpensive when compared to services like Dialog and LEXIS-NEXIS. For this article, I looked at three prominent Web-based online reference resources: Ask Jeeves, Electric Library, and Information Please. I had chosen Answers.com to review as well, but its recent acquisition by Net Shepherd and subsequent product overhaul made a side-by-side comparison with the other resources difficult. See the sidebar on page 55 for a brief discussion of the new service. To test the services, I posed three queries to each that could be answered with unambiguous, factual responses. The first was an "easy" question, which all services should have been able to answer. The results for this question allowed me to compare and contrast the depth of the results provided by each service. The second and third questions were deliberately "harder," ones that I didn't expect all of the services to be able to answer. The point here was to see what alternatives were offered if no results were found. Since Ask Jeeves and the Electric Library encourage the user to "ask questions," I searched using both keyword queries and simple, natural language sentences to test the capabilities of the language parsing system of each service.

In order to save you time your browser will often save copies of web pages you view on your computer so that when you return to the page it will load quickly. This is often a good thing, however, sometimes browsers are a bit lazy and don't look for an updated page before giving you the one on your hard drive. If the page has changed ("listen" links or other new content) then you often may not know it. Therefore, it's a good idea to know how to empty the "cache" or the folder where your browser stores the webpage copies.
