Hispanic Americans are Americans of Spanish-speaking descent. Many Hispanic Americans are the descendants of Mexican people who lived in the Southwest when it became part of the United States. Almost all other Hispanic Americans or their ancestors migrated to the United States from Latin America. The three largest Hispanic groups in the United States are Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Cuban Americans. History
General Resources
Internet Modern History Sourcebook (Paul Halsall, Fordham)
A huge and impressive archive of mostly primary material on modern European and American history, including much on the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries.
Documents in Military History (Dave Stewart, Hillsdale College)
Primary documents, many abridged, on Dettingen, Culloden, the American and French Revolutions, and miscellaneous military matters.
Current Value of Old Money (Roy Davies)
Pointers to information (on-line and in print) on the relative value of money through history. Very handy.
18th Century History: The Age of Reason and Change (Rick Brainard)

Chronologies
Eighteenth-Century Chronology (Jack Lynch, Rutgers)
An in-progress chronology on eighteenth-century world history, including literature, theatre, politics, science, religion, music, and art, from 1660 to 1800. Coverage is still spotty, and British culture is disproportionately represented.
The Romantic Chronology (UCSB)
A fine place to start on later eighteenth-century history. An extensive chronology with elaborate search capabilities:

Biographical Information
Using the SJC Library Online Catalog: Individual biographies can be found by typing the person's name last name first into the search box and then clicking on the Subject search button. For example, to find biographical information about author, Mark Twain, you would type Twain, Mark and then click the Subject search button. (If you click the Author search button you will get a list of books which he has written, not books about him.) The SJC Library does not have individual biographies about every famous person in the world; however, there are collective biographical resources which cover a wide range of well-known people. If you were to type your person's name into the online catalog, it would not lead you to these sources. The following is a list which might be helpful in locating these resources... • 1. Finding Background Information
Collections of statistics, encyclopedias, dictionaries, and area or country handbooks provide data, an overview of a topic and short definitions of terms and ideas. They often contain references to other books and articles which can be used for further research. For example, use these resources to find basic information about the country you will be researching, and to find the names, dates and places of major explorations to choose for your project. Selected examples are: Country Studies/Area Handbook Series catalog link online version through Library of Congress) The Country Studies Series presents a description and analysis of the historical setting and the social, economic, political, and national security systems and institutions of countries throughout the world and examines the interrelationships of those systems and the ways they are shaped by cultural factors. These studies were formerly published by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Area Handbook Program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Army. Although some are somewhat out of date, they can provide valuable background information and historical context on many lesser known areas of the world.
