EXPERT SYSTEMS BUILDING TOOLS: DEFINITIONS
An expert system tool, or shell, is a software development environment containing the basic components of expert systems. Associated with a shell is a prescribed method for building applications by configuring and instantiating these components. Some of the generic components of a shell are shown in Figure and described below. The core components of expert systems are the knowledge base and the reasoning engine.
Figure 3.1. Basic Components of Expert System Tools
  • Knowledge base: A store of factual and heuristic knowledge. An ES tool provides one or more knowledge representation schemes for expressing knowledge about the application domain. Some tools use both frames (objects) and IF-THEN rules. In PROLOG the knowledge is represented as logical statements. Reasoning engine: Inference mechanisms for manipulating the symbolic information and knowledge in the knowledge base to form a line of reasoning in solving a problem. The inference mechanism can range from simple modus ponens backward chaining of IF-THEN rules to case-based reasoning.

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
An expert system is a class of computer programs developed by researchers in artificial intelligence during the and applied commercially throughout the . In essence, they are programs made up of a set of rules that analyze information (usually supplied by the user of the system) about a specific class of problems , as well as provide analysis of the problem(s), and, depending upon their design recommend a course of user action in order to implement corrections. A related term is wizard (software) . Like an expert system, a wizard is also an interactive computer program that helps a user solve a problem. Usually, the term wizard is used for programs that search a database for criteria entered by the user. Unfortunately, the distinction between these two definitions is not universal, and some rule-based programs are called wizards.

    Introduction
"An expert system is regarded as the embodiment within a computer of a knowledge-based component from an expert skill in such a form that the system can offer intelligent advice or take an intelligent decision about a processing function. A desirable additional characteristic, which many would consider fundamental, is the capability of the system, on demand, to justify its own line of reasoning in a manner directly intelligible to the enquirer." (The British Computer Society's Specialist Group on Expert Systems (BCS SGES)) The term ``expert system'' refers to a system that uses contemporary computer technology to store and interpret the knowledge and experience of a human expert in a specific area of interest. By accessing this database of knowledge stored in a computer, a non-expert can get the benefit of expert advice in that area. An expert system is an interactive computer-based decision tool that uses both facts and heuristics to solve difficult decision problems, based on knowledge acquired from an expert.

    Expert System: PDAMum
By Azwan Abd Aziz Printable Version Introduction An expert system is a computer program conceived to simulate some forms of human reasoning (by the intermediary of an inference engine) and capable to manage an important quantity of specialized knowledge. A computer program designed to model the problem solving ability of a human expert (Durkin, 1994). An intelligent computer program that uses knowledge and inference procedures to solve problems that was difficult enough to acquire significant human expertise for their solutions (Feigenbaum). These capacities for reasoning and management allow the system to target a small number of relevant hypotheses in the mass of potential diagnoses and being able to find a satisfactory diagnostic conclusion. Two characteristics of the expert system are essential to accomplish this task:
    • the aptitude to process an important mass of specialized knowledge and the aptitude to simulate the human reasoning (in an imperfect manner).

    Expert Systems
An expert system is a computer program dedicated to solving problems and giving advice within a specialised area of knowledge. A good system can match the performance of a human specialist. The field of expert systems is the most advanced part of AI, and expert systems are in wide commercial use. Expert systems are examples of micro-world programs: their "worlds"for example, a model of a ship's hold and the containers that are to be stowed in itare self-contained and relatively uncomplicated. Uses of expert systems include medical diagnosis, chemical analysis, credit authorisation, financial management, corporate planning, document routing in financial institutions, oil and mineral prospecting, genetic engineering, automobile design and manufacture, camera lens design, computer installation design, airline scheduling, cargo placement, and the provision of an automatic customer help service for home computer owners. The basic components of an expert system are a "knowledge base" or KB and an "inference engine". The information in the KB is obtained by interviewing people who are expert in the area in question. The interviewer, or "knowledge engineer", organises the information elicited from the experts into a collection of rules, typically of "if-then" structure. Rules of this type are called "production rules". The inference engine enables the expert system to draw deductions from the rules in the KB. For example, if the KB contains production rules "if x then y" and "if y then z", the inference engine is able to deduce "if x then z". The expert system might then query its user "is x true in the situation that we are considering?" (e.g. "does the patient have a rash?") and if the answer is affirmative, the system will proceed to infer z.

    Abstract:
An expert system is a computer program intended to embody the knowledge and ability of an expert in a certain domain. The ideas behind them and several examples have been described in other lectures in this symposium. Their performance in their specialized domains are often very impressive. Nevertheless, hardly any of them have certain common sense knowledge and ability possessed by any non-feeble-minded human. This lack makes them ``brittle''. By this is meant that they are difficult to extend beyond the scope originally contemplated by their designers, and they usually don't recognize their own limitations. Many important applications will require common sense abilities. The object of this lecture is to describe common sense abilities and the problems that require them. Common sense facts and methods are only very partially understood today, and extending this understanding is the key problem facing artificial intelligence.

      ABSTRACT
The aim of SETH is to give specific advice concerning the treatment and monitoring of drug poisoning. Currently, the data base contains the 1153 most toxic or most frequently ingested French drugs from 78 different toxicological classes. The SETH expert system simulates expert reasoning, taking into account for each toxicological class, delay, clinical symptoms and ingested dose. It generates accurate monitoring and treatment advice, addressing also drug interactions and drug exceptions. The implementation of SETH began in April 1992 in our Poison Control Center. SETH is then daily used by residents as telephone response support on drug poisoning. Between April 1992 and October 1994, 2099 cases inputted by residents were analysed by SETH. Since that time three phases of evaluation have been performed. We conclude that an expert system in clinical toxicology is a valuable tool in the daily practice of a Poison Control Center
