So we got up at like hella-in-the-mornin’ and Richard had a beer as he walked over to turn off the alarm. Then he had another in the shower, making sure to keep the Herbal Essence and the Lucky Lager separate. "Hurry up, Richard!" Drew yelled, "It’s almost eight twenty, and we haven’t done the reading for ID 1 yet! I’m scared that Thee Professor will put the dunce cap on me and stick me in the corner, like the last time." Richard said, mouth full of Too-Lazy-To-Brush Listerine, "Yeah, if he does that again, I’m gonna cry. Then I’m gonna punch him in the neck." So then we went to breakfast at Frank, where we found many first-years studying (and as a side note, Richard failed to "get some of that"). We pulled out the reading and highlighted the first word from each paragraph, so’s to get a "feel" for the text. What did we learn? "Although... Many... Substantially... Yet... Foucault... Fuck... Existentialism... Philosophy... Biology... PoliticalScience... "Media studies"... Pomona... College... Ha... Ha... Ha... SchoolSux... The End." Needless to say, we were well prepared to make pretentious comments in class that would only serve to make us look better than the other students. And off we went, propelled by a wave of cheese egg-fed first-years.

My Little Corner of Existentialim
What is Existentialism? Existentialism is the philosophy that places emphasis on individual existence, freedom, and choice. Existentialism stresses the individuality of existence, and the problems that arise with said existence. Because there is so much diversity in the philosophy of existentialism, a concrete definition is hard to put down. Certain themes are common to almost all existential writing, which helps mark the writing as such. The term itself suggests one major theme, the stress on concrete, individual existence, and on subjectivity, individual freedom and choice. The idea of the highest ehthical good can be found in philosophy since the days of Socrates and Plato. It was generally held that this good was the same for everybody; as a person approached this moral perfection, she/he became morally like the next person approaching this moral perfection. Kierkegaard reacted to this way of thinking by saying that it was up to the individual to find his or her own moral perfection and his or her own way there. "I must find the truth that is the truth for me. . .the idea for which I can live or die" he wrote. Other Existentialists have followed along this way of thinking, one must choose one's own way, make their own individual paths without the aid of univeral ideas or guidance. Subjectivity is also important to Existentialism. Passionate choices and actions are important. Personal experiance and acting on one's own convictions are essential to arriving at personal truths. A better understanding of a situation is gained when one is in the middle then watching from the sidelines with a detached view. Systematic reasoning and acting is avoided at all costs in Existential thought. Kierkegaard and Nietzsche are noted for their random, unsystematic way of exploring their ideas, using many different literary syles to express themselves.

They are non-spatial. Bodies on the other hand have "extention" of some sort: size, shape, weight, length, breadth. Under dualism, bodies lack the capacity for thinking by themselves (without spirit or minds). In addition, minds and bodies can be separate from each other: for example, Buffy and Faith's consciousnesses can separate from their original brains and enter another body then be switched back. We can oppose dualism to materialism . No, not the greedy money-grubbing materialism, but the view that people consist of nothing but physical matter, and that the mind is just a process of the brain

Mikhail Epstein. AN OVERVIEW OF RUSSIAN PHILOSOPHY
"The Karamazovs are not scoundrels but philosophers, because all real Russian people are philosophers..." Dmitry Karamazov, in Fyodor Dostoevsky. The Brothers Karamazov It is a property of the Russian people to indulge in philosophy. ...The fate of the philosopher in Russia is painful and tragic. Nikolai Berdyaev. The Russian Idea Introduction What is philosophy? There is no simple and universal definition and many thinkers consider the task of such a definition to be impossible. The most credible attempt is a nominalistic reference: philosophy is what Plato and Aristotle, Kant and Hegel were occupied with. Perhaps, the single most famous and broadly citedif slightly eccentricdefinition belongs to A. N. Whitehead: philosophy is a series of footnotes to Plato. If this is true, then Russian philosophy must be viewed as an indispensable part of the Western intellectual tradition since it provides perhaps the most elaborated footnotes to the most mature and comprehensive dialogues of Plato: The Republic and The Laws . Questions of social ethics and political philosophy, of an individual's relationship to a State, of adequate knowledge and virtuous behavior, of wisdom and power, of religious and aesthetic values, of ideas and ideals as guidelines for human life all of these are central to Russian philosophy and exemplify its continuing relevance vis-a-vis Plato's legacy and the Western tradition in its broadest sense. Moreover, the very status of ideas in Russian philosophy mirrors Plato's vision of them as ontological entities, "laws", or ideal principlesas opposed to mere epistemological units. In discussing Russian philosophy, especially that of its Soviet period, we are bound to consider the practical fate of such Platonic conceptions as we explore the final outcome of an ideocratic utopia, wherein philosophy was designated to rule the republic.

Jean-Paul Sartre: Brilliant philosopher, or totalitarian apologist?
By Jim Holt
Posted Monday, Sept. 22, 2003, at 8:28 AM PT
Who was Jean-Paul Sartre? Was he the greatest philosopher of freedom of the 20 th century? Or its most influential apologist for totalitarianism? More than two decades after his death, French intellectuals are trying to reconcile the two Sartres. In the cafes of Paris, the question " Štes-vous Sartrien? " is once again being heard. Recently, a new biography of Sartre and several homages to his career have become best sellers in France. One of them, Bernard-Henri L©vy's Sartre: The Philosopher of the Twentieth Century , has just been brought out here in English. What is taking place is a rehabilitation of sorts, and it isn't hard to see what's behind it. As an intellectual superstar and monstre sacr© , Sartre has no equal in the English-speaking world. Even in France you would have to go back to Voltaire to find a figure of comparable stature. At his funeral in 1980, a crowd of 50,000 people followed the cortege through the streets of Paris to the Montparnasse cemetery. This ugly little wall-eyed scribbler had done it all. He created existentialism, a philosophy that could be

Existentialism
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Existentialism is a philosophical movement that views the individual, the self, the individual's experience, and the uniqueness therein as the basis for understanding the nature of human existence. The philosophy generally reflects a belief in freedom and accepts the consequences of individual actions, while acknowledging the responsibility attendant to the making of choices. Existentialists prefer subjectivity , and can view human beings as subjects in an indifferent and often ambiguous universe.

Overview
Existentialism was inspired by the works of Arthur Schopenhauer S¸ren Kierkegaard Fyodor Dostoyevsky and the German philosophers Friedrich Nietzsche Edmund Husserl , and Martin Heidegger . It became particularly popular in the mid- 20th century with the works of the French writer-philosophers Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir . The main tenets of the movement are set out in Sartre's L'Existentialisme est un humanisme , translated as Existentialism is a Humanism Although many, if not most, existentialists were

Existentialism
Existentialism, philosophical movement or tendency, emphasizing individual existence, freedom, and choice, that influenced many diverse writers in the 19th and 20th centuries. Major Themes Because of the diversity of positions associated with existentialism, the term is impossible to define precisely. Certain themes common to virtually all existentialist writers can, however, be identified. The term itself suggests one major theme: the stress on concrete individual existence and, consequently, on subjectivity, individual freedom, and choice. Moral Individualism Subjectivity Choice and Commitment Perhaps the most prominent theme in existentialist writing is that of choice. Humanity's primary distinction, in the view of most existentialists, is the freedom to choose. Existentialists have held that human beings do not have a fixed nature, or essence, as other animals and plants do; each human being makes choices that create his or her own nature. In the formulation of the 20th-century French philosopher Jean Paul Sartre, existence precedes essence. Choice is therefore central to human existence, and it is inescapable; even the refusal to choose is a choice. Freedom of choice entails commitment and responsibility. Because individuals are free to choose their own path, existentialists have argued, they must accept the risk and responsibility of following their commitment wherever it leads. Dread and Anxiety Kierkegaard held that it is spiritually crucial to recognize that one experiences not only a fear of specific objects but also a feeling of general apprehension, which he called dread. He interpreted it as God's way of calling each individual to make a commitment to a personally valid way of life. The word anxiety (German Angst) has a similarly crucial role in the work of the 20th-century German philosopher Martin Heidegger; anxiety leads to the individual's confrontation with nothingness and with the impossibility of finding ultimate justification for the choices he or she must make. In the philosophy of Sartre, the word nausea is used for the individual's recognition of the pure contingency of the universe, and the word anguish is used for the recognition of the total freedom of choice that confronts the individual at every moment.

Introduction to Philosophy Have you ever felt that "hell is other people"? (Jean-Paul Sartre expressed this thought in "Huis-clos", his play). Do you think you are "condemned to be free" because you make your own choices in life, and are not dependent on external morality? If so, then you may be an Existentialist, or think Existentialist thoughts and have Existentialist emotions. One existentialist thought is "Nothing is true, everything is permitted". Fyodor Dostoevsky expressed this through Ivan, a character in his book 'The Brothers Karamazov'. Ivan later shed his existentialism for faith in God. (misquoted by Sartre in Existentialism is a Humanism One existentialist feeling is nausea. Another is apathy. Both feelings are in response to not actually being able to change the world. edit

Welcome to the Existential Primer
Since 1996, the Existential Primer has provided a basic introduction to existentialism and the related Continental philosophies. Since the 1950s philosophy has been divided into Analytic schools, focused on language and communication, and the metaphysical approaches of Continental schools. Existentialism attempts to describe our desire to make rational decisions despite existing in an irrational universe. Unfortunately, life might be without inherent meaning (existential atheists) or it might be without a meaning we can understand (existential theists). Either way, the human desires for logic and immortality are futile. We are forced to define our own meanings, knowing they might be temporary. In this existence… The Individual Defines Everything.
