Jean Paul Sartre
Jean Paul Sartre was born in Paris, June 21, 1905 as the first child of a marriage entered into a little over a year previously. His father, Jean-Baptiste, had meanwhile died of an infection contracted whilst serving in the French navy, Jean Paul grew up in the home of his maternal grandfather, Karl Schweitzer.     This Karl Schwietzer was a professor of German language at the Sorbonne, the author of numerous published works, and also an uncle of the celebrated medical missionary Albert Schwietzer.    Other circumstances than the demise of his father also conspired to make Sartre's childhood difficult. He was noticeably small in stature and obviously cross-eyed besides being over-intelligent and bookish. His mother was also cloyingly affectionate.     The difficulty Sartre found in gaining acceptance, and his precociousness, together with grandfather Karl's tutoring, led to his putting together a book entitles Les Mots (The Words) which related the experience of himself and his mother in the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris in search of childhood playmates.
He was inducted into the French military following the outbreak of European war in 1939 and was detailed to serve in a meterological section charged with the management of weather balloons. He was subsequently captured in June 1940 and imprisoned into 1941 by the Germans.

Friendly to Continental Philosophy Last Updated: September 2, 2005
Philosophy Department Earlham College Graduate Programs in Continental Philosophy." let me know "Continental philosophy" means the serious, non-analytic study of the history of philosophy. I do not believe that continental philosophy is best studied in analytic departments. The following list includes the exciting departments in the US, which offer compelling and thought-provoking philosophy. I do not list non-philosophy departments or programs, because, if I were to do that, the list would be much more difficult to maintain and I do not have the knowledge to maintain such a list. So I am restricting myself to philosophy departments. The schools are in alphabetical order. This is not a ranking. Of course these schools are not equal in quality or in friendliness to Continental philosophy. I provide more information about some graduate programs (a very brief description and the list of the faculty). I only list those faculty members who concentrate on some aspect of continental philosophy. I do not list the other members of such departments, you can find them by visiting their webpages. Hopefully, there will be soon some information for all departments. Any input in this effort is appreciated. Yet, it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep this page current, so please be patient with the suggested updates. If you are looking for a Continental graduate program, you need to get current information on these schools (from their catalogues, from their web sites, or from their current students) and make your decision in that light. This list provides these links in order to make that job a little easier.

Existentialism
Nausea and No Exit ) than through his more purely philosophical ones (such as Being and Nothingness and Critique of Dialectical Reason) It is sometimes suggested, therefore, that existentialism just is this bygone cultural movement rather than an identifiable philosophical position; or, alternatively, that the term should be restricted to Sartre's philosophy alone. But while a philosophical definition of existentialism may not entirely ignore the cultural fate of the term, and while Sartre's thought must loom large in any account of existentialism, the concept does pick out a distinctive cluster of philosophical problems and helpfully identifies a relatively distinct current of twentieth- and now twenty-first century philosophical inquiry, one that has had significant impact on fields such as theology (through Rudolf Bultmann, Paul Tillich, Karl Barth, and others) and psychology (from Ludwig Binswanger and Medard Boss to Otto Rank, R. D. Laing, and Viktor Frankl). What makes this current of inquiry distinct is not its concern with "existence" in general, but rather its claim that thinking about human existence requires new categories not found in the conceptual repertoire of ancient or modern thought; human beings can be understood neither as substances with fixed properties, nor as atomic subjects primarily interacting with a world of objects.

Existentialism
The roots of existentialism began with Kierkegaard in the first half of the 19th century. He was critical of Hegel's philosophical system which analysed being (or existence) in an abstract and impersonal way. Kierkegaard was concerned with the individuals subjective experience of what it is to exist as a human being. For Kierkegaard the individual constantly has to choose what s/he is to become without recourse to the findings of science and philosophy. As we saw in the philosophy of god section Kierkegaard thought that the individual could chose to have a religious faith in the face of an absurd world
Edmund Husserl
The German phenomenologist Edmund Husserl (1859-1938) was influential in the development of methods that were later used by the existentialists. A phenomenologist is interested in things as they appear to consciousness, rather than things-in-themselves (See Kant). This emphasis on the individuals subjective consciousness was continued in the 20th century as existentialism developed.
Martin Heidegger
Martin Heidegger (1889-1976) studied under Husserl. Heidegger was interested in the "question of being". He thought that western philosophy had been over obsessed with the problem of knowledge. For Heidegger the individual as being-in-the-world was characterised by action and anxiety: knowing the world is not our primary way of being in the world. In his later works, Heidegger became more interested in the history of concepts in language. He regarded his investigations as an attempt to disclose or uncover the concealed nature of being. His most fundamental question was: why should there be being at all, when there could be nothing? Although Heidegger claimed he was not an "existentialist", his influence on Sartre and the existentialist movement is undeniable.

Nathan Radke claims that Charlie Brown is an existentialist. Our anti-hero sits, despondent. He is alone, both physically and emotionally. He is alienated from his peers. He is fearfully awaiting a punishment for his actions. In desperation, he looks to God for comfort and hope. Instead, his angst overwhelms him, and manifests itself as physical pain. There is no comfort to be found. There has been much discussion concerning Peanuts as a voice of conservative Christianity, including several books such as the 1965 work The Gospel According to Peanuts It should also be noted that while Schulz did not consider himself religious, neither did he refer to himself as an existentialist. In fact, he was unfamiliar with the term until the mid 1950s, when he stumbled across a few newspaper articles about Jean-Paul Sartre. He was certainly not formally schooled in philosophical works. And yet, his simple line drawings provide illumination into the questions and problems raised by existentialism. is good? What

Existentialism
An introduction by Anja Steinbauer really means to be human, revealing the human being in her genuine and 'naked' existence. For this purpose all outside decorum has to be peeled away: social and professional status, wealth and power, education, virtue, honour - all must be stripped away to leave just the human being. Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) very clearly perceived the demonic and precarious behind the world of appearances. On this basis he set about reinterpreting classical Greek culture as well as unmasking the nature of his own time. Art and literature developed alongside existentialist thought. In them too, the cry for genuineness makes itself heard. Death, fear and horror become prominent themes, but these negative `moments' are emphasised as contributing to a positive determination of humanity. This positive determination, however, is nothing but existence itself. What does 'existence' mean? In contrast to 'essence', which is a thing's fundamental nature, existence is the quality of factually 'being there'. In Western philosophy, the term goes back to classical Roman thought: 'ex-sistere' means 'to step out', i.e. to enter into the world of facts. Traditionally, all things of the world were seen to be brought into existence by an outside force, namely God. God alone was true 'ex-sistence', emerging from himself and by himself, the only being whose

Existential philosophy is more a trend or attitude than it is coherent school or movement because it is intensely subjective. As a result, existentialist thinkers tend to vary greatly in their concerns and ultimate conclusions. In general, existentialism emphasizes the uniqueness and isolation of individual experience in a hostile or indifferent universe while denying any special or unique essence that humans might have.

On the one hand, there are certain ideas and principles which most existentialists agree on in some fashion; on the other hand, there are ideas and principles which most existentialists reject... Existentialism and Philosophy Existentialism has an unusual relationship with different philosophical systems. Most of the time a person will adhere to one system or another, but not both - thus a person might be a Logical Positivist or a Pragmatist, but not both. Existentialism, however, can coexist with many different philosophies.

Types of Existentialism: Existentialist Philosophy Comes in Many Forms
Existentialism can appear in a number of different forms. Because it is not a single school of philosophy, existentialist ideas and perspectives can become integrated into any number of other philosophical schools, ideologies, and even religions. Sometimes this existentialist trend is self-conscious and deliberate; other times it is simply an expression of common human questions and problems. Ultimately more that unites rather than divides them - that is, after all, why so many trends can be brought together under a single label.

Recent The existentialism we see today is rooted most prominently in the writings of Søren Kierkegaard, and as a consequence, it might be argued that modern existentialism started out as being fundamentally Christian in nature, only later diverging into other forms. It is thus important to understand Christian existentialism in order to understand existentialism at all.

It is the heart which perceives God and not the reason. That is what faith is: God perceived by the heart, not by the reason. Blaise Pascal, "Pensées" Man finds nothing so intolerable as to be in a state of complete rest, without passions, without occupation, without diversion, without effort. Then he feels his nullity, loneliness, inadequacy, dependence, helplessness, emptiness. Blaise Pascal, "Pensées" Man is only a reed, the weakest in nature; but he is a thinking reed. There is no need for the whole universe to take up arms to crush him: a vapor, a drop of water is enough to kill him. But even if the universe were to crush him, man would still be nobler than his slayer, because he knows that he is dying and the advantage the universe has over him. The universe knows nothing of this. Blaise Pascal, "Pensées"

Overview
Existentialism was inspired by the works of Arthur Schopenhauer S¸ren Kierkegaard Fyodor Dostoyevsky and the German philosophers Friedrich Nietzsche Edmund Husserl , and Martin Heidegger . It became particularly popular in the mid- 20th century with the works of the French writer-philosophers Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir . The main tenets of the movement are set out in Sartre's L'Existentialisme est un humanisme , translated as Existentialism is a Humanism Although many, if not most, existentialists were

The origins of Existentialism
Soren Kierkegaard was the first philosopher to actually consider that he wrote about Existentialism. Since his time existential approaches to philosophy about life have grown very greatly in influence and also appeared in several forms influenced by numerous writers and thinkers. In retrospect several writers who lived before Kierkegaard are seen as having been concerned with the same subject matter. All these earlier and later writers works have influenced the modern world - and perhaps by more than we can know.
After the Second World War was there was a most notable upsurgence of enthusuiasm amongst substantial sections of the rising generation and the intelligentsia for philosophic ideas concerned with existential approaches to life. The writer principally looked to during this phase of the popularisation of an atheistic and humanistic approach to Existentialist philosophy was Jean Paul Sartre.
Well, what is Existentialism?

Basic Existentialism
Restrain your biases and suppress your notions as to what existentialism is. I seldom encounter individuals without “rubber stamp” answers for what is existential, what constitutes existentialism, and who were/are the existentialists. If you wish to learn something about existentialism — read on. If you seek dark, depressing thoughts about alienation and hopelessness… watch 24-hour news channels. Those most often associated with “existentialism” failed to form a cohesive philosophical discipline based on existential theories. Existentialism, while taught at universities, cannot point to leaders in the same way idealism or rationalism can. Kierkegaard and Nietzsche are forerunners of existentialism. If we want to thank, or blame, two men for radical individualism, we could start with them. There were others before them, but most texts on existentialism seem to firmly place them at the the base. Radical individualism is not existentialism, however.

This is a collection of themes from 19th and 20th Century lierature and philosophy, largely relating to the position of human beings in the world. Or, to put the matter differently, existentialism is that area which attempts to answer such questions as "What are the issues which confront us by virtue of our being human?" Some writers take "existence" to be such an issue and, in effect define humans as those creatures for whom "being" is an issue. Other writers are more concerned with action and with interaction between human beings. It is constituative of existentialism that the traditional tools of philosophical exposition and argument are often pushed into the background in favor of other methods, such as literary methods. This class will examine both streams and encourage students to participate on as many levels as possible. What You Should Do The aim of this class is to be interesting, useful, and meaningful to you.
