LIFE AFTER DEATH, NIHILISM, AND MODERN PHILOSOPHY
(Third Millennium Final Edition - corrections and revisions are continuing)
What Nihilism, Rationalism, Humanism, Agnosticism, Existentialism, etc., Really Say About Your Future
Do you believe that life does end, or may end, at death? Everyone who believes that death may be the end should read the following essay from cover to cover. It represents a serious attempt to identify what may be a critical flaw in the foundation of many modern philosophies. It will help those who study Nihilism, Rationalism, Humanism, Agnosticism, and Existentialism, recognize questions that are probably already on their minds. It will address essential questions that you need to seek answers for. We will suggest that, whether they realize and admit it or not, anyone who does not believe in an "afterlife" is necessarily a "nihilist". In response to what appears to be a strong, intuitive, predisposition of readers to dismiss the conclusions of this essay as simply wrong, it has grown from a few pages to a lengthy, sometimes difficult to read, somewhat rambling, occasionally boring, text. For those who want a shorter introduction to our thoughts on nihilism, please read the summary of this essay by clicking here . Most readers will want to read the summary before proceeding with the detailed analysis. Those who choose to continue with this version may also find the summary interesting, as it includes some additional materials (the summary is from a chapter in a book we publish, which we provide links to at the end of this essay).

Karl Jaspers (1941)
On My Philosophy
Source On My Philosophy , from Existentialism from Dostoyevsky to Sartre , edited by Walter Kaufman. Half of article reproduced here.
I. The Course of my Development
On February 23, 1883 I was born in Oldenburg, a son of Karl Jaspers, the former sheriff and later bank director, and bis wife Henriette, nee Tantzen. I passed a well-guarded childhood in the company of my brothers and sisters, either in the country with my grandparents or at the seaside, sheltered by loved and revered parents, led by the authority of my father, brought up with a regard for truth and loyalty, for achievement and reliability, yet without church religion (except for the scanty formalities of the Protestant confession). I attended the high school of my home town, and from 1901 the University. My path was not the normal one of professors of philosophy. I did not intend to become a doctor of philosophy by studying philosophy (I am in fact a doctor of medicine) nor did L by any means, intend originally to qualify for a professorship by a dissertation on philosophy. To decide to become a philosopher seemed as foolish to me as to decide to become a poet. Since my schooldays, however, I was guided by philosophical questions. Philosophy seemed to me the supreme, even the sole, concern of man. Yet a certain awe kept me from making it my profession. Instead I felt that I should look for my vocation in practical life. At first I chose the study of law with the intention of becoming an attorney. At the same time I attended classes in philosophy. That proved disappointing. The lectures offered nothing of what I sought in philosophy: neither the fundamental experiences of Being, nor guidance for inner action or self-improvement, but rather, questionable opinions making claim to scientific validity. The study of law left me unsatisfied, because I did not know the aspects of life which it serves. I perceived only the intricate mental juggling with fictions that did not interest me. What I sought was perception of reality. Concern with art and poetry were incomplete substitutes; so even was an enthusiastic journey to Italy to see

Nausea
Perhaps the best known and most philosophical of Sartre's novels. A classic piece of existentialist literature. Sartre's existentialist magnum opus . The principal theoretical text of his early period, it deals with the relationship between phenomenology and ontology and lays the foundations for the development of an existential psychoanalysis. Notebooks for an Ethics Including 'No Exit', perhaps Sartre's best known play, 'The Respectful Prostitute', 'The Flies' and 'Dirty Hands'.

General Observations About Existentialism
DANISH AND GERMAN EXISTENTIALISM The most important expressions of Existentialism are found in Germany and France. German Existentialism is represented by three thinkers: Barth, Heidegger, and Jaspers. Their common source of inspiration is Kierkegaard's thought, of which there was revival in Germany shortly after World War I. Heidegger and Jaspers are also dependent upon some significant motives found in the writings of Nietzsche. Heidegger felt, in addition, the influence of his teacher, Husserl.

GENERAL OBSERVATIONS ABOUT EXISTENTIALISM The acute analysis to which Existentialism has subjected the human person reveals one undeniable fact: the weakness of man, who is burdened by the most galling contradictions. In the speculative sphere there is the desire to possess absolute knowledge but it is rendered vain by the constant presence of skeptical doubt; in the field of morality there is the desire for infinite happiness but it is rendered uncertain by the constant presence of evil; there is the desire for everlasting life but it is dashed to the depths by the ubiquitous presence of death.

Sartre insisted that human existence is always individual and particular. It is always a case of my existence and your existence, and the two are radically separate as though each of us lives sealed in a morally air tight world. Sartre defined existence as a mode of being. The way one chooses to live is his particular mode of being. As the individual chooses from a wide range of possibilities and commits himself to those choices, he defines his existence. France's `Liberation' daily is selling out for the sake of survival
Founder Jean-Paul Sartre might roll in his grave, but the famed leftist newspaper has allowed the son of a banker to become the company's largest shareholder... For 20 million euros (US$26 million), Rothschild acquired 37 percent of Liberation, which was founded in 1973 by philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre and current publisher Serge July as what one writer has called "a Maoist instruction sheet."
Fairmont hits the road with new CD, 'Hell Is Other People'

Hell Is Other People, Fairmont's third full-length CD is thought provoking and evocative, a concept album loosely based on Jean Paul Sartre's play, No Exit. Man's cruelty toward one another, and the inability to escape this human tendency, is a central theme of both the album and the play. The listener embarks on a journey in which the narrator battles a person he loves ("Your Fan From Far Away") and a person he hates ("The Monster You've Become"), as well as his own self-loathing and disappointment ("Don't Give Up The Ship"). By album's end, the narrator is still incapable of escaping his own hell, much like the characters in Sartre's play.

The origins of Existentialism
Soren Kierkegaard was the first philosopher to actually consider that he wrote about Existentialism. Since his time existential approaches to philosophy about life have grown very greatly in influence and also appeared in several forms influenced by numerous writers and thinkers. In retrospect several writers who lived before Kierkegaard are seen as having been concerned with the same subject matter. All these earlier and later writers works have influenced the modern world - and perhaps by more than we can know.
After the Second World War was there was a most notable upsurgence of enthusuiasm amongst substantial sections of the rising generation and the intelligentsia for philosophic ideas concerned with existential approaches to life. The writer principally looked to during this phase of the popularisation of an atheistic and humanistic approach to Existentialist philosophy was Jean Paul Sartre.
Well, what is Existentialism?
