"the model that violence is seen as a rational choice based on perceptions of risks and benefits of one's actions. Violence is reasonable when it results in a "perceived gain" (for example, monetary gain in robbery or personal gratification in the abuse of one's spouse or child) and is deterred when the risks are perceived to outweigh potential gains".

It may also include neglect, that is the refusal or failure to care for the older person whether intentional or unintentional. Posts: Posted Jun 21, 2005 - 02:46 AM: Subject: Satre's Existentialism I need some clarity on Satre's account of value. From what I gather he sees the will as sovereign to everything else, and it is the individuals will and ultimately action which creates a value in something, for example if you love your parents the act of staying with them over going to fight in the war creates that value of love, but does he mean to say that after that action, it is an a priori value that can be used as a guideline for future action, or does me mean somehow that even after this there is no a priori value or guideline for future decisions? Is he saying that in future decisions relating to love for ones parents, say that it is a choice between saving ones own life or that of ones parents that you couldn't use the previous value "staying with my parents is much more valuable than going to fight in the war" to act as a guideline somewhat? I guess what I'm asking is, does he believe that every single decision a man makes in his lifetime is a 'virgin decision', an invention?

PHILOSOPHY 291: EXISTENTIALISM
A1 First Term TR 09:30-10:50 R. Burch
The purpose of this course will be to explore and evaluate the contributions of some leading existential philosophies to the perennial quest for meaning and truth in human existence. Our central focus will be the question of selfhood and self-making as this bears upon such issues as "What can I know?" "What should I do?" "What may I hope?" and such existential themes as freedom, responsibility and death. (Note: Although this course has no official pre-requisites, since existential philosophy is properly intelligible only as a response to its antecedents in the philosophical tradition, some background in the history of philosophy is highly recommended.)

General Observations About Existentialism
DANISH AND GERMAN EXISTENTIALISM The most important expressions of Existentialism are found in Germany and France. German Existentialism is represented by three thinkers: Barth, Heidegger, and Jaspers. Their common source of inspiration is Kierkegaard's thought, of which there was revival in Germany shortly after World War I. Heidegger and Jaspers are also dependent upon some significant motives found in the writings of Nietzsche. Heidegger felt, in addition, the influence of his teacher, Husserl.
