Evolution, Science, and Society: evolutionary biology and the national research agenda At the invitation of their respective Society Presidents, representatives from the American Society of Naturalists , the Society for the Study of Evolution , the Society for Molecular Biology and Evolution , the Ecological Society of America , the Society of Systematic Biologists , the Genetics Society of America , the Animal Behavior Society ), and the Paleontological Society met in Indianapolis on April 22-23, 1995, to discuss the need for preparation of a "White Paper" defining the challenges and opportunities facing the study of evolution. At that workshop, co-chairs D. Futuyma (editorial) and T. Meagher (organizing) were elected to seek funding to support workshops to develop background material for a white paper document as well as an associated executive summary and to coordinate and oversee their writing and publication. A Working Group representing major disciplines in evolutionary biology was convened to draft these documents with support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

    Welcome to Linnean.org
    A Living Forum for Biology
Welcome to the Linnean Society of London. We hope you find our new web site a useful means to find out more about our work as a 'living forum for biology'. Now that we have entered the new millennium - and one of the most exciting periods in the biological sciences - the Society's role remains as that outlined in our first charter, 200 years ago , as: The cultivation of the Science of Natural History in all its branches. And whilst we remain proud of our heritage, today more than ever the Society is an important contemporary organisation encouraging debate, research, publications meetings as well as maintaining internationally important historical collections in the biological sciences. The Society uniquely embraces the entire sweep of biology, and particularly biological diversity and evolution. Most of its membership, whether professional or amateur, is concerned with biological systematics or taxonomy, which involves the examination and collation of a wide range of scientific evidence from such fields as genetics, ecology, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and palaeontology and impinges on related disciplines in agriculture, fisheries, forestry, geology, medicine, parasitology and veterinary science where accurate identification is essential to any research. This, coupled with the recognition of the importance of systematic biology research to biodiversity conservation, means that as it moves into its third century, the Linnean Society continues to play a central role as the urgency and magnitude of the task of documenting the world’s flora and fauna is recognised.

Evolution, Complexity and Philosophy
Essence of evolutionary theory Evolutionary theory is used in several disciplines. Any theory of evolution is about processes of change. An extra requirement for an evolutionary theory is that purely random and entirely time-reversable patterns are excluded; evolution concerns exclusively change that is, at least statistically irreversible. To qualify, irreversible change must entail processes that lead to emergence, or at least the persistence, of ordered structure in space and time. (The new evolutionary Pardigm [Laszlo E] 1991, pxxiii) In general, evolutionary theories are about [the dynamics of] processes of adaptation, replication and information of systems in environments. Key to evolutionary theory is that it explains the built-up of knowledge out of "nothing", or better out of at least an evolutionary process with the building blocks mentioned before. Darwinian evolutionary theory explains the built-up of knowledge without any reference to "guided evolution" or any processes guided by thought and mind-like processes. Five key-references to evolutionary thought can be found here.

Charles Darwin , father of the theory of evolution by natural selection Alfred Russel Wallace In biology, evolution is the process by which populations of organisms acquire and pass on novel traits from generation to generation. One of the first theories of biological evolution was proposed in the early 19th century by Jean-Baptiste Lamarck , although his fundamentally flawed idea was that individual organisms acquire traits during their lifetimes that they pass on to offspring. With the publication of Charles Darwin and Alfred Russel Wallace 's joint paper in – followed by Darwin's book Origin of Species in – the theory of evolution by natural selection became firmly established within the scientific community. In the work by a number of scientists combined Darwinian natural selection with the re-discovered theory of heredity (proposed by Gregor Mendel ) to create the modern evolutionary synthesis . In the modern synthesis, "evolution" means a change in the frequency of an

Today, I wish to talk about Darwin's biological considerations on morality. There are other people who treated the same or the related problems in the 19th century, e.g. Spencer or Huxley ; but it seems to me Darwin is by far the most important. When I began to study the Darwininan evolutionary theory some twenty years ago, I was very much impressed by Darwin's persistence with his thesis of the continuity of man and animals. In The Descent of Man , published in 1871 (2nd ed., 1874), this thesis is put forward as follows [Q1]: It has, I think, now been shewn that man and the higher animals, especially the Primates, have some few instincts in common. All have the same senses, intuitions, and sensations, similar passions, affections, and emotions, even the more complex ones, such as jealousy, suspicion, emulation, gratitude, and magnanimity; they practise deceit and are revengeful; they are sometimes susceptible to ridicule, and even have a sense of humour; they feel wonder and curiosity; they possess the same faculties of imitation, attention, deliberation, choice, memory, imagination, the association of ideas, and reason, though in very different degrees. The individuals of the same species graduate in intellect from absolute imbecility to high excellence. They are also liable to insanity, though far less often than in the case of man. (

A Word from our Department Chair The diverse academic programs offered by the Biology Department at East Carolina University are predicated on a rich tradition of teaching by more than thirty caring faculty who conduct teaching and research in a variety of areas including: ecology, evolution and organismal biology, and cellular and molecular biology. Teaching and research thrusts, supported by 10 technical and 4 clerical staff, range from the broad global-community ecological issues down to cellular and molecular levels. Our program provides preparation for more than 600 undergraduate majors and approximately 90 graduate students seeking careers in a variety of health-related, industrial, business, academic, research and professional fields. A low student to teacher ratio in upper division classes provides the opportunity for stimulating and meaningful student-faculty interaction as well as success in achieving educational goals of learning in one of the largest academic units on campus. However, in spite of our size, the Department of Biology envelops a friendly, helpful, and scholarly attitude that enables students to meet successfully the challenges of a rigorous, modern curriculum.
