For Enlightenment and Health
How did this sudden awakening come about? Brno Zoo has a mid-range development approach which has attracted the attention of the Board of Representatives of the City of Brno to such an extent that it has not skimped and has made some funds available from the city budget. The increase in the number of visitors, which last year surpassed a quarter of a million (in 1996 it was 168,000), proves that it is a question of investment which is popular with voters, perhaps because they are expressing their positive relationship to the protection and improvement of the environment. EZAA Congress in Prague
A part of the programme of the EZAA congress in Prague includes visits to several Czech and Moravian zoos. We have been promised that our foreign colleagues will even come to visit Brno. If I have emphasised the informal nature of this congress, we can expect that the meetings on Mniší hora Mountain will be all the more personal. Although we have managed several accomplishments based on our mid-range plan for the development of Brno City Zoo, we still need to consult with experienced professionals from abroad. The specifications of zoos (including their architectural details) are different enough from conventional buildings that each group of specialists who gain their expertise from decades of experience manages to save a significant amount in terms of costs. I only mention construction because compared to the past, there is a great deal of building under way on Mniší hora Mountain. On-site consultations are usually much more fruitful than round-table discussions of problems, so in this spirit we welcome our obliging colleagues from abroad.

Protection of Endangered Species Protection Programmes and Herd Books Helsinki Zoo is involved in the shared protection programmes of the European Zoos. Because even hundreds of individuals are needed to conserve a species and the zoos have only a limited space, the zoos form a network which maintains the populations of endangered species. 20 of the species in Helsinki Zoo belong to the European Endangered Species Programme ( EEP ), and when we add new species to the 200, we favour species which are in a protection programme.
The initial aim of the protection programmes is to make the individuals staying in zoos breed. The aim of increasing the population in zoos is to maintain the animals' natural genotype and behaviour. Biologists, who are specialised in the protection of species, have herd books to help them in this work. The planning and the selection of suitable pairs is based on these herd books. Hence, for example, Amur tigers which have been born at Helsinki Zoo have travelled all over Europe to meet their new spouses.
In addition to increasing the populations living in zoos, the zoos also support, when possible, the protection of species in their natural habitat. Informing and educating is also part of the nature conservation work. Simultaneously as the visitor of the zoo receives new information on different species and the factors that threaten them, the wider issues concerning the protection of the environment are also introduced. These issues include such topics as the destroying of the rainforests and the importance of maintaining diversity.
