European Zoos' Commitment to Conservation of the Atlantic Rainforest
Introduction
The EAZA Rainforest Campaign, the second EAZA Conservation Campaign, was held in 2001-2002. The Campaign was launched at the EAZA/EEP Annual conference in Prague in September 2001. The official closing of the Campaign took place at the EAZA Annual Conference 2002 in Barcelona.
The main focus of this Campaign was on the conservation of the Atlantic rainforest and especially on lion tamarin programmes. Main goals of the Campaign were fundraising and raising public awareness.
Results
The EAZA Rainforest Campaign has been a huge success, some of the major achievements are:
  • A total of 97 institutions (from 20 different countries) have participated in the Campaign; Over € 287,471 has been collected for the Lion Tamarins of Brazil Fund;

    Manatees show no complex social structures besides the long term unit of cow and calf. Nevertheless they are social animals preferring to live in herds. Isolated animals in captivity show stress symptoms: they eat little, stereotype, i.e. swim back and forth, doing rolls all the time and the like.

    Zoologists from across Europe are joining forces to save wild tigers in Siberia after an exceptionally severe winter. The tigers an endangered species have been driven out of forests by the lack of wild game and have been roaming villages and attacking pets and livestock in search of food. Several European zoos have answered an appeal for crates to move stray tigers away from areas where they have been in conflict with humans. Only about four hundred tigers are thought to be left in the wild in Siberia. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service Search BBC News Online

    October 25, 2002 While elephants are often one of a zoo's top attractions, a new report charges that their level of care often falls short of star treatment. In a study released this week, the UK's Royal Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) said elephants in European zoos are often unhealthy, endure considerable stress, and have a much shorter life than their counterparts in the wild. Their condition is frequently even worse than that of elephants in Asian timber camps, alleges the RSPCA, which is calling for wide-ranging changes in the way zoo elephants are treated. In the meantime, the group says, European zoos should stop importing and breeding elephants. The RSPCA, based in Horsham, England, said it commissioned the study after several high-profile cases of elephant mistreatment, including one in which electric prods were being used to train elephants at a British zoo.

    The RSPCA is calling for tougher welfare standards for elephants currently kept in European zoos and for an immediate end to their breeding and importation.
    New RSPCA-commissioned research highlights a catalogue of welfare concerns for captive elephants in European zoos and the RSPCA has seen no evidence to suggest that European zoos will ever be able to provide satisfactory welfare for elephants.

    I support the RSPCA's demand for European zoos to phase out their elephant populations with an immediate end to imports and breeding, while making substantial improvements to welfare standards for elephants currently in their care.
