Much unhappiness has come into the world because of bewilderment and things left unsaid. - Dostoevsky We may live without friends; we may live without books; But civilized man cannot live without cooks. - Edward G. Bulwer-Lytton With the emergence of the Internet, searching for one's "roots" has become increasingly popular and much easier. There are literally hundreds of resources relating to genealogy on the Internet. We will try to focus on the "how-to" of searching and the sites that would interest those looking to or from the Newly Independent States for their heritage. If you are interested in talking with others who are researching their "roots" in Russia and other NIS countries, we have developed a listserver called for Russian/NIS genealogy called FPGEN for sharing information for those researching their roots in Russia/NIS.

    Section 1 (collected by Tom Wodzinski , Canberra, AUSTRALIA) The purpose of this document is to bring together a range of Internet based information sources (as well as any other sources of information) which may be of interest to those with a specific interest in Polish (and related) genealogy. It is hoped that people just starting out in this field will find it a useful starting point. A more comprehensive coverage of researching Polish genealogy can be found in the publications listed in section 6 of this document. Contributions, suggestions or corrections are always welcomed.

    This document is sourced from:
    a) other FAQs (esp. soc.genealogy.slavic) which may be of direct or indirect relevance;
    b) postings to the GENPOL, Poland-Roots-l (and other) Listservs, and Soc.Genealogy.Slavic (and other) newsgroups;
    c) E-mailed contributions and suggestions; and
    d) just surfing.
    Given the dynamic nature of the Internet I do not claim that all of the resources and links identified in this guide are still current. I last checked all the URL's in September 1999.

    America's rise to the status of the world's premier power, while inspiring much admiration, has also provoked widespread feelings of suspicion and hostility. In a recent and widely discussed book on America, Après L'Empire , credited by many with having influenced the position of the French government on the war in Iraq, Emmanuel Todd writes: "A single threat to global instability weighs on the world today: America, which from a protector has become a predator." A similar mistrust of American motives was clearly in evidence in the European media's coverage of the war. To have followed the war on television and in the newspapers in Europe was to have witnessed a different event than that seen by most Americans. During the few days before America's attack on Baghdad, European commentators displayed a barely concealed glee - almost what the Germans call schadenfreude - at the prospect of American forces being bogged down in a long and difficult engagement. Max Gallo, in the weekly magazine Le Point , drew the typical conclusion about American arrogance and ignorance: "The Americans, carried away by the hubris of their military power, seemed to have forgotten that not everything can be handled by the force of arms ... that peoples have a history, a religion, a country."

    It is an important idea to use the resources of your ethnic and religious groups. It is an especially great idea to join a Polish and/or Ukrainian genealogical association. There you will be able to learn about genealogical topics directly related to you and your research. Researching Polish and Ukrainian roots have unique concerns and stumbling blocks that others do not know about or need to know about. Such organizations that focus on areas particular to your interest will benefit you enormously. Also, Polish and Ukrainian organizations have publications, in which are articles of interest to your research, interesting information that deals with your own family research, as well as bulletin boards or surname indexes where members can post surnames and villages they’re researching. It’s a great place to network, share information and possibly find a long-lost relative! East European Genealogical Society ( www.eegsociety.org
