European Genealogy The attached genealogical information (link at end of page) is an amalgam of data from several researchers and numerous sources. In particular I would like to mention the contribution of Dale BeVier of the USA, Ina Jones-Nolte and Kurt Jorgenson of Germany, and Katherine Noth of France. Based on the information available to me from the above mentioned sources and the book 'Les Beviere', by Michel Missoffe, published Paris, 1930, I have constructed a composite family tree that begins with a Jean Beviere who was living in Maroilles, Picardy - France in 1550. The first four generations are taken from information in 'Les Beviere'. The trees beginning with Louis Beviere (b. 1620 - Chimay) and Martin Beviere (b. 1640 - Godegard) are the work of Ina, Katherine and Dale. Kurt Jorgenson supplied the data on Philip Martinson Beviere which, with other information, links (albeit circumstantially) the work of Ina, et al and the information from 'Les Beviere'. The linkage of all work in the attached genealogy, as well as the following information and speculation, is purely my doing and does not reflect any consensus of opinion among the aforementioned individuals. I have consolidated, I believe, all that we currently know and all that I personally suspect to be true. I have done this in hope of providing a starting place for other researchers who may be able to help us fill in the many, many blanks that exist. Please address any comments, complaints, corrections or additions to my attention:

Here is another personal DNA note from Lisa Shea. Thanks for joining us.
Bluedolphin If you're doing DNA testing for genealogy, you probably have encountered Haplogroup T. In mtDNA testing, this is the huge european group of people. When you compare the HVR-1 region of the mtDNA against the standard of the Cambridge Reference Sequence, people are categorized as haplogroup T if they have these mutations: I indeed had these two mutations in my ancestry, meaning my ancestry was a haplogroup T! Professor Sykes developed "fancy names" for each of the 7 haplogroups of Europe instead of just calling them T and Z and so on. Since these are traced on the maternal line, he invented a "female clan leader" for each group that apparently spawned the entire clan. The haplogroup T clan is called the "Tara" clan, which is Gaelic for "rock". This is the group that began in Italy and then migrated across europe into England and Ireland.

European Genealogy
Tracing European genealogy is not always easy. European surnames first occurred between the 11th and 15th centuries, with some patronymic surnames (ex. Scandinavia) being acquired as late as the nineteenth century. Prior to this time, particularly during the "Dark Ages" between the 5th and 11th centuries, people were largely illiterate, and had little need for distinction beyond their given names. Various European nations have had differing naming customs. The Scandinavians for example named children after the given name of their father, thus every generation saw a new surname. In Poland on the other hand, the ending "ski" in a surname would indicate "son of"; thus, the name "Walenski" implies "the son of Walen". The countries comprising Europe were governed by both Church and State; thus European genealogy requires knowledge of both religious sources and governmental records for effective genealogy research. Because there is so much diversity in the naming customs of nationalities, working with an experienced specialist like Heirlines is recommended for the most accurate results.

Local History: Sources for Research
Introduction
This guide has been prepared primarily to assist individuals beginning genealogical research at the Library of Congress concerning families that originated in East Central Europe. The regions covered correspond approximately to territories that once formed the Austro-Hungarian empire, which broke up at the end of World War I. The turbulent history of this region makes precise demarcations impossible; but the guide focuses on areas that are now part of Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Poland, and portions of Romania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, and Ukraine. Sources cited here are limited to basic English-language resources that are useful in the early stages of research. Each of the categories employed below has been chosen merely as a tool for organizing materials. They are inexact and not exhaustive. In part, they simply reflect the availability of appropriate resources. Information concerning additional ethnic groups and regional history may also be found in the expanding genealogical databases available on the Internet. Several "gateway" sites are listed in the final section of this bibliography. The spelling of surnames and multilingual place names of the region are special problems for genealogists. Several sources listed in this guide address that issue. Here again, there are valuable resources on the Internet to help resolve language problems. (See

For the past 12 years I researched my Croatian roots (genealogy) as well as helping hundreds of other Americans discover their Croatian roots. Whenever helping people find their ancestors, their villages and family documents I always end by telling them they must visit Croatia… Stari Kraj (old homeland). The beauty of Croatia and the friendliness of the people is always overwhelming. Only those who have been there know the feeling!
I would like to share the beauty and the joy with others and have planned a tour of Croatia for this Fall. This is a perfect time to visit Croatia, as the weather is pleasant and the large crowds are gone. The tour, which is based on areas where many seminar attendees’ families originated, will run from October 5 –16.
We have planned a tour that will allow us to see the variety that is Croatia, yet not spend all our time traveling by bus and transferring from hotel to hotel. The first 4 nights we will be in at a hotel in Opatija, 1 night we will stay at Plitivica, 2 nights in Split and 3 nights in Zagreb. This will give us a real opportunity to "get a feel for the places we visit." This is a very unique tour.

Just wanted to give you an update about our Heritage and Genealogy Tour coming up in October.
We are finalizing a few final details and have actually upgraded one of the hotels. I have been in touch with Mr Jelinic, head of Matica the Croatian Cultural organization. Matica is arranging for history/genealogy speakers for our group in Split and Zagreb. In addition Sanja Frigan and Miro Caic will be joining us for either a dinner or breakfast in Zagreb. Also I have been in contact with the head of the National Archives in Zagreb, where we will be given a tour and orientation regarding what records they hold and what services they offer. One very special treat will be our dinner at St Thersia's Orphange in Zagreb where 35 children live and are cared for by Carmelite Sisters... I understand the Sisters make a fabulous dinner! So you can see that not only is the tour well "thought out" but I have been working to make this the very best tour possible.
Our group is turning out to be an interesting and unique group, with people from CA, WA, IA, MI, OH, PA, NJ, DC, TX and SC. While most are Croatian we will have an old friend of mine who works for a think tank in DC, who majored in Austro-Hungarian history. Kollanders commented how nice everyone in our group was and how easy they were to work with.
