Whether it be a question of West as opposed to East Catholicism and Protestantism as opposed to Eastern Orthodoxy Christianity as opposed to Islam ; many have claimed to identify cultural faultlines across the continent. Europe has been a cradle for many cultural innovations and movements, such as Humanism , that have consequently been spread across the globe. Yet another faultline is the one that separates the lands once occupied by the Ottoman Empire and the ones that weren't, which created the current Christian-Islam faultline, that separates

It must be considered certain that with the first serious difficulties the European Union will be ready to collapse. As long as there are no great difficulties, she will survive, but constantly without meaning - no matter how many museums may be founded or universities or whatever - Europe can not make sense, she can not have a real meaning and essential unity without a soul, that is, as long as the Churches remain divided - therefore, the day the European Union was founded, she immediately entered the orbit of her destruction. ... - Read more Post a question / start a discussion MEISTER ECKHART SITE When your will becomes God's will" - "When God's will becomes your will". Cardinal Ratzinger Sees European Culture in Decline Warns recognition of same-sex unions would lead to "extremely grave consequences." ROME, May 14, 2004 (CWNews.com/LifeSiteNews.com) - In a powerful speech delivered to a conference on European identity, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger spoke of a severe "decline" in European culture. The German cardinal also lamented that the European "charter of fundamental rights" defines marriage in vague terms, and predicted that the recognition of same-sex unions would lead to "a dissolution of the image of man, with extremely grave consequences."
Cardinal Ratzinger, the prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, spoke on May 13 to a conference organized by the president of the Italian Senate. Delivering a grim assessment of Europe's spiritual condition, he concentrated his most serious remarks on the condition of marriage and family life.
The European charter of rights mentions the right to marry, the cardinal observed, "but it does not provide any protection for marriage either juridical or moral not offer a more precise definition." Those omissions are critical, he added, because "we all know that at this point marriage and the family are threatened."

European Culture Horns Ende (Horn's End, Hein), Der Tangospieler (The Piano Player, Hein) or Flugasche (Flight of Ashes, Maron). Since this was the only public opposition (often difficult to get through the censor) it had to engage the reader. We know what freedom means much better when there is a clear-cut oppression. Culture in this country is not that separated from low culture, culture that people could relate to. I know that that is also bad because money can be made by not challenging viewers or readers. Hollywood's happy endings being the lasting examples even though they have become less primitive lately. But at least the road is open for occasional novels like William Styron's Sophie's Choice , of which even the film was a reflection, playing with the problems in the culture common to Europe and this country? Is it the background of oppression in this book that makes its representation of freedom so fascinatingly problematic? Or the insanity of the liberator with his make-believe-freedom who, because of being Jewish, was only recently liberated himself?

Many of our holdings are now very valuable, and those holdings have helped to make Thomas Cooper Library the only library in South Carolina with membership in the Association of Research Libraries. Items marked in the USCAN catalog with "Spec Coll" are housed in the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections. Housing a group of collections dedicated primarily to research, the Department not only preserves and makes available to researchers these rare and valuable materials but also exhibits them to enrich undergraduate teaching programs. Some fields in which our holdings are strong include Civil War history, English and American literature, the history of science, the history of the English Bible, children's literature, and the history of the book. Nearly all the items in this exhibit of early printing are more than four hundred years old. Introduction

Google library ninjas launch "virulent attacks" on European culture
BBC News tells us that plans for "a vast digital library to preserve Europe's cultural heritage" have taken another step, as various EU culture ministers responded favorably to Jacques Chirac's call . And of course, money was also mentioned: Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker warned the Comedie Francaise meeting that such a massive project would only be possible if sufficient funding was made available. Digital libraries, especially vast ones, are surely a Good Thing, but some of these people are saying weird stuff: "We have to act," Mr Juncker, whose country is the holder of the EU presidency, told the meeting of culture ministers, artists and intellectuals who gathered to come up with a European charter for culture. "That's why I say 'yes' to the initiative of the French president (Jacques Chirac) to launch a European digital library. I say 'yes' because Europe must not submit in the face of virulent attacks from others," he said. If the BBC is quoting him accurately always a matter for concern this man is insane. Remember, the "virulent attack" that he's talking about is Google's deal with some research libraries to digitize books and let the public read them online.

"The Kurgan solution is attractive and has been accepted by many archaeologists and linguists, in part or total. It is the solution one encounters in the Encyclopedia Britannica and the Grand Dictionnaire Encyclopedique Larousse. It describes Indo-European expansions in a framework congruent with expectation, and perhaps most importantly, it derives the Proto-Indo-Europeans from the Pontic-Caspian region, a territory which its bitterest opponents would normally admit was at least Indo-Iranian and undisturbed by population intrusions since the beginning of the Neolithic." (Mallory JP (1989) In Search of the Indo Europeans. Thames and Hudson Ltd. London. p. 185)
"In sum, three of the five predictions those involving mate preference for earning potential, relative youth, and physical attractiveness were strongly confirmed across cultures. The prediction regarding ambition-industriousness was confirmed only in 29 samples, and showed a significant reversal among the Zulu. The chastity prediction received still less empirical support, with only 23 of the 37 samples showing significant sex differences." (Buss, D.M. (1989) Sex differences in human mate selection: Evolutionary hypotheses tested in 37 cultures. Behavioral and Brain Sciences 12 (1): pp. 13)
"Conscious egohood is intensified in the civilizational process. The walls that rise up to isolate the city from nature also rise up to isolate the citizen from nature. The continuum is broken, and the rise of writing helps to break up as well the continuum of the sensorium, to locate consciousness in the written word. What the written word is to the sensorium, the ego is to the entire consciousness, and the city is to the entire encirclement of nature. Writing, individuation, and civilization are all parts of one larger cultural phenomenology. Because civilization is at a moment of overripeness in the Third Dynasty of Ur, the whole civilization process is being lifted up into consciousness in the Gilgamesh epic. "The owl of Minerva flies at dusk."" (Thompson, W.I. (1981) The Time Falling Bodies Take To Light; St. Martin’s Press: New York p. 196)
