THE MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE AREA NETWORK ARE THE FOLLOWING :
The history of archeology

The history of European archaeology is a complex field of research in which national traditions and language barriers have often inhibited a fuller understanding of the disciplinary past, and notably of those aspects involving cross-boundary research programmes and international orientations. Appreciating the impact of antiquarian travellers, the romantic movement, the colonial enterprise or the Second World War on the practice of archaeology requires researchers to display a truly pan-European perspective. Through research projects, regular meetings, workshops, publications and its internet site, AREA seeks to enhance the understanding of this multifarious field, to address its theoretical and methodological premises, and to highlight its broader contribution to both historical analysis and contemporary practice.
about
Archaelogy and identity

This historiographical concern proves to be all the more necessary when investigating the issue of archaeology and identity. In effect, the birth of scientific archaeology in the early 19 th century coincided with the rise of a romanticist defence of the European nation state. The study of the past has since then been repeatedly invoked to legitimise political entities, but also to challenge them. Alongside extreme forms of nationalist abuses of scientific research, archaeology has often contributed to a sense of political and cultural identity on regional, national and transnational levels. Ranging in its research interests from romantic origin myths through glorious museum displays to political atrocities, AREA seeks to investigate the complex but fascinating relationships between archaeology and identity through historical research in which the study of archives occupy a central position.

  • About archeology
Archaeology or sometimes in American English archeology (from the Greek words = ancient and Archaeology has been described as a craft that enlists the sciences to illuminate the humanities. Archaeology is an approach to understanding lost cultures and the mute aspects of human history, without a cut-off date: in England, archaeologists have uncovered the long-lost layouts of medieval villages abandoned after the crises of the 14th century and the equally lost layouts of 17th century parterre gardens swept away by a change in fashion. In downtown New York archaeologists have exhumed the 18th century remains of the Black burial ground. In the study of relatively recent cultures, which have been observed and studied by Western scholars, archaeology is closely allied with ethnography. This is the case in large parts of North America, the South Pacific, Siberia, and other places. In the study of cultures that were literate or had literate neighbours, history and archaeology supplement one another for broader understanding of the complete cultural context, as at Hadrian's Wall.

    Aubrey Baadsgaard
Aubrey Baadsgaard is a Ph.D. candidate in the department of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania, specializing in the archaeology of the Bronze and Iron Ages of the Near East. She has worked extensively in the American Southwest and the Near East, and spent this past summer excavating Iron Age sites in Jordan. Her research interests include the archaeology of the domestic sphere, the construction of self-identity through body ornamentation, and issues of the building and protection of cultural heritage sites in the modern Near East. Her dissertation will examine adornment in Ancient Mesopotamia using information from written sources and jewelry and cosmetic containers from some of the museums collections. Marshall Becker, Ph.D.
Dr. Becker, Professor of Anthropology at West Chester University of Pennsylvania received all of his degrees in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania. He had published extensively in physical anthropology and archaeology, as well as in cultural anthropology. Beginning with his participation in archaeological excavations in Tikal, a major Maya site in Honduras and at many sites in North America. He also has worked at nearly 100 archaeological sites throughout the Mediterranean.
Prof. Becker's studies of the Lenape and their many native neighbors in the Delaware Valley, and how they respond to contacts with European Colonists, have been published in a number of places. These publications document the success of the Lenape in preserving their traditional lifestyle during the long period from early contact until the major Lenape bands decided to move west.
