The Earliest Bandkeramik
By Maximilian O. Baldia (Copy Right © 2000 - July 22, 2003
Introduction
The purpose of this text is to provide a general overview of the culture and is intended as a resource for students and teachers of European Archaeology.
Location
The genesis of the first full-fledged farmers of Central Europe is sought in Transdanubia, western Hungary, and adjacent regions of the Danube Basin ( Map Map ). This leads to the notion of a Danubian culture complex These Danubian farmers existed between about 5700/5500 – 5000 cal BC ( Chronological Table They are known primarily by the German term Linearbandkeramik ” or “ Linienbandkeramik abbreviated ( LBK ). Literally translated this means Linear Band Ceramics or Linear Band Pottery (often incorrectly termed Linear Pottery ). The name stems from the characteristic design of linear bands gracing the early pottery. The culture is now usually referred to simply as Bandkeramik . The Bandkeramik was first recognized by the German archaeologist F. Klopfleisch in 1884.

European Archaeology
The Department of Anthropology at the University of Iowa is one of the few departments in North America with a strength in European archaeology. The faculty in this group conduct on-going fieldwork in Europe on a broad range of time periods - from the Paleolithic to Roman civilization - and diverse topics. Jim Enloe is currently working on changes in adaptation of late Upper Paleolithic hunters in northern France. Katina Lillios is examining the role of memory and material mnemonics in the development of social inequalities during the Copper Age of Portugal and Spain (3500-2500 BC). Glenn Storey is working on issues of the ancient economy in Roman Holland and Greco-Roman Sicily, using ground penetrating radar to aid in site investigation.

Archaeology Archaeological Excavation at the Michaud site in Auburn, Maine. ARCHAEOLOGY IN MAINE There are two general classes of archaeological sites, based upon their origin. Native Americans created the "prehistoric" archaeological record, and the "historic" archaeological record was created by European Americans.
PREHISTORIC ARCHAEOLOGY Maine's Native Americans left no written records, indeed few lasting records of any kind, before the arrival of Europeans. The first historic record of them was written by European explorers in the sixteenth century, so we refer to the archaeology of Maine's Native American inhabitants as "prehistoric" archaeology. To understand Maine's prehistoric archaeological sites, the threats to them, and the means for their protection, the following paragraphs provide an introduction to Maine prehistory and archaeological site location. The first Native Americans to live in Maine moved into the area from the south or the west about 11,000 years ago as the land recovered from its glaciation, and as tundra and open spruce woodland vegetation grew enough to support the large and small game that they hunted (including mastadon and caribou). We call these people Paleoindian. Because of poorly developed late glacial drainage, and perhaps because of major seasonal runoff and occasional catastrophic drainage of huge interior lake basins dammed by ice or glacial till, these people tended to camp on very well drained (sandy) soils away from river valleys.

Current Projects Excavation of burial mounds associated with the Heuneburg hillfort in southwestern Germany. The site is located on the Danube, and is part of an archaeological landscape which has been studied intensively since the 19th century. Concurrent analysis of ancient DNA from excavated skeletal material from the tumulus cemeteries in order to reconstruct social organization of the early Iron Age populations which inhabited this area from 600 to 400 B.C.. Photographs of the site and the surrounding landscape are available in the Archaeological Projects section of the Web site.

European Archaeology Skills Exchange (EASE) The EASE Leonardo da Vinci project provides funded 6-week archaeology placements, for archaeology undergraduates studying in the UK, to join a range of excavations throughout Europe. Placements will take place in the Summer of 2005 to coincide with student holidays. Participants are encouraged to use the EASE placements as a source of accreditation for compulsory fieldwork modules in their UK course of study. All host partners in the project will be happy to complete field assessment sheets and to provide evidence and feedback to assist in this process. Click the placement links on the left to find out more. Graduate European Archaeology Skills Exchange (GrEASE) The GrEASE Leonardo da Vinci project will provide funded placement opportunities for recent graduates from UK archaeology courses. The placements are for 9-weeks in duration and will all begin in Summer 2005. These placements offer a great opportunity for final year archaeology students to gain valuable European experience of archaeological excavation, following completion of a relevant degree in the UK. Click the placement links on the left to find out more. Cultural Heritage And Training Targeting Youth 'CHATTY' Are you a training provider in the UK heritage sector? The CHATTY Leonardo da Vinci trainer exchange provides funded exchange visits for UK trainers to visit organisations in other European countries, to exchange best practice and to establish new contacts and partnerships for future cooperation. CHATTY placements are available for trainers in natural heritage management, traditional skills, crafts, archaeology and more! If you feel that you or your organisation would benefit from participation in a CHATTY exchange then
