http://www.e-a-a.org/default.htm
Welcome to the European Association of Archaeologists, the association for all professional archaeologists of Europe and beyond! On this site you can find details of our aims, our activities and publications, and our forthcoming conferences. The main forum for our members to interact is represented by our Annual Meetings . These lively and well-attended conferences, held every September in a different country of Europe, are one of the highlights of the archaeological year. The official language of the EAA is English, but if you have difficulties with English you can communicate with us in any major European language. Click on the membership button for information about how to join. We look forward to meeting you!
Who are the members? The EAA is a membership-based association open to all archaeologists and other related or interested individuals or bodies. The EAA currently has over 1100 members on its database from 41 countries world-wide working in prehistory, classical, medieval and later archaeology. They include academics, aerial archaeologists, environmental archaeologists, field archaeologists, heritage managers, historians, museum curators, researchers, scientists, teachers, conservators, underwater archaeologists and students of archaeology.
What are the Aims of the EAA?

European Journal of Archaeology (EJA)
The European Journal of Archaeology (EJA) is published three times a year in April, August and December. Members receive all three journals for the year of subscription as part of the membership package, regardless of the time of subscription.
Aims and Scope
The EJA (published from 1993 to 1997 as the Journal of European Archaeology , vols 1-5) seeks to promote open debate amongst archaeologists committed to a new idea of Europe in which there is more communication across national frontiers and more interest in interpretation. The journal accepts not only new empirical data and new interpretations of the past but also encourages debate about the role archaeology plays in society, how it should be organized in a changing Europe, and the ethics of archaeological practice. All periods are covered; papers, review articles, interviews and short 'debate' pieces are all sought.

EU SOCRATES PROGRAMME Polski VISIT OF DR JOHN CHAPMAN (UNIVERSITY OF DURHAM, DEPARTMENT OF ARCHAEOLOGY) TO UNIVERSITY OF POZNAÑ, INSTITUTE OF PREHISTORY, May 15-18, 2000 Lecture course:
THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF SOCIAL PRACTICES This series of eight lectures is designed to provide advanced and in-depth coverage of the archaeology of social practices to undergraduate and postgraduate students with a developed knowledge of archaeological theory and method. The lecture course will be offered to students as part of the course of History and Methodology of Archaeology. For each lecture, a range of questions is provided relating to each theme to facilitate the selection of topics which could be integrated with each student’s knowledge of North European or Balkan archaeological materials.
Course Summary – Aims and Objectives In this course, I aim to examine some of the basic tenets of archaeological thought about production, circulation and deposition. Recent research in social anthropology and material culture studies has opened up new perspectives on the relationship between humans and objects, which complement the research in geography on space and place. This research should enable the group to discuss the constitution of human identities through the objectification of people in things and places and the social practices whereby such objectification occurs. A second aim is the exploration of the quality of archaeological artifacts as fragments. It is a remarkable fact that hardly any artifact research has paid attention to the potential of fragmentation in the objects we study. While accidental breakage is not denied, the case will be made out for deliberate breakage of a wide range of objects in the middle of their use-life. The social anthropology of enchainment will be explored to relate object fragmentation to social relations. The converse of fragments – sets of complete items – provides another means of maintaining social relations – through accumulation. The social anthropology of barter, exoticity and long-distance specialists will be used to place artifact sets in a broader social context.

Archaeology on the World Wide Web
by DAVID W.J. GILL
An article first published in Antiquity 264 (September 1995). Only the electronic sections of the review have been included here Some links no longer exist; updated links now appear in square brackets. Comments and corrections are welcome to d.w.j.gill@swan.ac.uk Discussion Groups This is not a review of how the Internet can be used by archaeologists. There are, for example, numerous discussion groups which use electronic mail to disseminate information. These are of varying quality, and can fill up your electronic mailbox, but can provide some lively and stimulating discussion from scholars round the world. Many of these groups are now advertised on the Web, and an archived summary list can be found at Swansea
World Wide Web Pages
There are also many pages which I have not been able to visit. The Web is becoming so popular that some sites are being inundated by electronic visitors, and it has become very difficult or slow to obtain access. My advice (in the UK) is to start surfing early; by 11 am the response time across the network is considerably lengthened. As one of my colleagues put it, 'The early bird catches the World Wide Web Worm'. I have also tried to refrain from writing a review of pages. Pages are being revised all the time and by the time this appears in print, the Web will have changed out of all recognition. In general terms there are three types of pages on the Web that you might wish to consult. The first will consist of indexes of useful pages. These can be general in character or very specialised to a specific topic. The second will serve as information pages. These might include addresses of institutions and publishers, lists of archaeology courses, or perhaps personal home pages (PHPs) where you can learn more about colleagues! The third will consist of research data such as excavation reports, images, journal articles and the like. As a word of warning, remember that it is easy to surf around in the first category and never come across any real data. My advice would be to familiarise yourself with what types of resources are available, then concentrate on finding data suitable for your interests. If you are unable to find anything, consider putting your own page on the Web.
