Introduction
The purpose of this text is to provide a general overview of the culture and is intended as a resource for students and teachers of European Archaeology.
At the Edge: The First Farmers in the Carpathian Basin
The first farmers appear perhaps as early as 6400 to 6200 cal BC near at the southeastern edge of Central Europe in the Carpathian Basin . This is much earlier than previously thought. We hypothesize that the cooler and dryer climate between ca. 6400 and 6150 cal BC encouraged the first (North) Balkan – Carpathian Neolithic farmers to occupy the Carpathian Basin as far north as Tisza River Basin, up to the Maros (Mures) or Körös River ( Map These makers of unpainted (monochrome) pottery preceded or gave rise to the actual Starcevo-Koros-Cris ) culture, which probably dates to about 6100 – 5500 cal BC. The complex name for this culture is partly due to historical and political differences as well as perceived prehistoric variation in pottery styles. Map more intensively excavated in 1932 by Vladimir Fewks, Robert Ehrich and others.

The National Museum began early to be the depository of collections, now become the largest in the country, of objects illustrating North American archaeology-that is the state of aboriginal culture before it became modified by European influence. These prehistoric relics, derived from mounds and other ancient burial-places, on or below the surface of the ground, in caves, shellheaps, etc., are made of chipped and ground stone, copper, bone, horn, shell, clay, and to a small extent of wood and vegetable fibres. "Similarity of shape afforded the principal guidance in arranging these specimens, many of which leave a wide scope for conjecture as to the uses to which they were applied by the makers." Three separate series have been laid out for exhibition in the great upper hall of the old Smithsonian building by Dr. Charles Rau, who is curator. First a synoptical collection illustrating European archaeology, by means of typical specimens arranged serially in the circle of table-cases occupying the center of the room; this should be examined first, as it condenses into brief space the whole range of prehistoric workmanship. The general collection illustrating the archaeology of all North America forms the second, and most important part of the exhibit; the third part being independent special collections relating to limited localities. The general collection occupies the table-cases on the floor and proceeds in classification as the cases are numbered, from 1 upwards; the wall cases being devoted to the special local exhibits.

Archeology helps explain Indo-European language
by Natalya Seay
DM Staff Reporter October 20, 2004 European and South Asian languages have a number of similar words because they originated from one language called Indo-European over 6,000 years ago, a professor of linguistics said Monday. In his research, Darden used archeological findings to explain how one language spread all over the Eurasian continent and why. That society could not be farmers, since farmers could not travel much several thousand years ago, Darden said. Only herders could travel over extensive areas. But keeping herds also required space, and that explains why herders moved from place to place, spreading their language and culture. A candidate for such a society could be the Pit Crave culture, Darden said. The Pit Crave group lived in the area of Russian steppes and what is now parts of the Ukraine, Russia, Romania and Bulgaria. People of the Pit Crave culture used horses that allowed them to travel over a large territory, Darden said. They kept herds and knew how to get bronze.

(full document in .rtf format, download zip file 37 KB) This work concerns the chemical study of the organic materials of natural origin used for treating the inside of amphoras, for water-proofing materials of caulking and pictorial found on the ships (IV cent. BC.- II cent. A.D.) found in the urban port of Pisa.
The chemical study of these materials could, if integrated properly with available information from historical sources and archaeological data contribute knowledge to craft techniques and everyday activities of the past and furnish precious information on exchanges and ancient commercial trade routes.

European Heritage Laboratory on Naval Archeology
(With the contribution of E.U. within the Culture 2000 framework program) Thanks to its transactional structure, the European Heritage Laboratory "Le Navi di Pisa" has been promoted as scientific support activity
Managed by the town of Pisa, and co-ordinated by the Soprintendente Archeologo per la Toscana (Archaeological Supervisor for Tuscany), the laboratory should also consider the general strategy developed by the Scientific Commission specifically established by the Italian Ministry of Culture to plan and design the creation of the Roman Ships Museum in Pisa. The activity will be based on a strict scientific collaboration, in order to widen the feasibility of future works and make possible the mutual exchange of experience and their diffusion at an international level. The exchange of experience will focus on naval archaeology and on safeguarding of submerge wood discussing on innovative aspects for the diffusion and the presentation to the public of the results and will take advantage of the knowledge acquired by the partners participating in the laboratory. The basic activity of the laboratory is much more relevant in relation to the fact that most of the ships found in the old Pisa port are in good condition of conservation; indeed the structure of the relics is still intelligible. Moreover, on an important part of the boat's superficies, there are still remnants of the wooden caulking work, and traces of the paint on the wood surface.
