I took my BA in Archaeology in Nottingham and then did a NERC funded PhD in Cambridge, on developing a method to analyse seasonality information from the European oyster which was applied to Danish shell midden sites. This was followed by a Sir James Knott fellowship at the University of Newcastle and then a 3 year lectureship before moving to the University of York in 2004.
    Interests
My research interests focus on European archaeology, particularly the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods and there are 3 key themes which I am working on: palaeodiet and consumption practices; settlement and mobility; and death and burial. I aim to bring innovative approaches to the study of the Mesolithic and the transition to the Neolithic through the development of new themes and theoretical frameworks, as well as fieldwork projects. I also continue to study mollusc remains in order to investigate 3 important research topics: seasonality studies; climate change; and the investigation of over-exploitation of resources. I am working on projects and colloborations in Denmark, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Ireland and Scotland.

Paper 1: The Principles of Archaeology
This course gives a general introduction to archaeological theory, with particular emphasis on current issues and debates. The course begins with a discussion of the New Archaeology and the study of cultural systems, evolutionary and ecological perspectives. Ways of describing the nature of the archaeological record are examined in relation to the findings and role of ethnoarchaeology. The course continues with an account of recent approaches within the discipline which use ideas taken from Structuralism, Marxism and Hermeneutics. The social context of the archaeologist, with particular reference to gender studies, is examined. The teaching for the course comprises one 2 hour seminar and 23 lectures per week. Students are also expected to produce one essay per term.
Paper 2: The Practice of Archaeology
The course aims to equip students with a broad understanding of archaeological methodology through lecture series examining bio-archaeological methods, artefact studies, quantitative analyses, dating methods and other topics, consolidated by student-led seminars exploring their application through case studies. In addition, students may opt to join related practicals in the analysis of plant and animal remains, aerial photography and survey, computing and drawing.

    RATIONALE:
General knowledge about the Pre-European past of the Australian continent is often ill-conceived or based on socio-cultural evolutionary stereotypes. This course introduces students to the complexity and diversity of the Pre-European past, placing Aboriginal cultural adaptations among the most successful in human history. Fundamental to an understanding of Aboriginal culture is an awareness of its past. From an understanding of the human past through archaeology, students are in a position to assess the extraordinary achievements of Pre-European hunter-gatherers on the Australian continent.
    SYNOPSIS:
This course will address the major issues and examine the archaeological evidence relating to Australian "prehistoric" archaeology, including initial colonisation of the continent, environmental history, the pattern of Pleistocene adaptations and late Holocene Change. The course will also address theoretical approaches as case studies and deal with the problems associated with the practice of archaeology as it relates to "living cultures". It is felt that this course will provide an essential background for those interested in pursuing an archaeology career as a sub-discipline within anthropology or for those with a general interest in Australia's human past.

Acknowledging that the quality and diversity of european landscapes constitute a c to establish procedures for the participation of the general public,
    http://www.heritagecouncil.ie/landscape/
    Introduction
Ireland's landscape is its people's landscape. Such 'ownership' confers both benefits (enjoyment, appreciation and access) and responsibilities (informed decision making and sustainable use). The Heritage Council recognises that the people of Ireland are responsible for the landscape as it stands today and that they will have responsibility for their landscape in the future. If we lose people and their links with the land we will be left with just wet hills and lakes" (Conor Skehan Landscape as a Focus of Cultural Identity 1996) The aspects of our natural and cultural heritage which make up our landscape are so intertwined that any attempt to maintain an approach to the future use of our landscape which supports a sectoralised approach is to do that landscape a real disservice. Landscape must not be considered in neat compartments with, as in the recent past, each compartment (or use) working for its own interest and not seeking links which bring benefits to all. Real benefits are to be derived from co-operation, partnership, and co-ordination between all who impact on our landscape. The Irish landscape is a living landscape in every sense of the word. It has and will continue to be used in an ever-changing variety of ways. We must be prepared to put in place systems and structures that will serve our landscape well, allowing its continued use and safeguard its value in a positive way for our children. We can use this approach to deliver a better kind of progress and achieve truly sustainable development.
