... Nederlands Archaeology of Western Europe Our research is focused on the archaeology and cultural history of Western Europe, with special appreciation for the archaeological heritage of Flanders, the northern region of Belgium. Our activities envelop the whole extent of archaeological research in general. In recent years, special attention is paid to the inventory of archaeological sites, the aerial photography and monitoring of sites, the ground surveys and landscape archaeology, the excavation of historic sites, the metallographical, petrographical and bio-archaeological analyses, the management of sites with special archaeological or cultural interests and the publication and promotion of archaeology in general. Our website gives an quick overview of recent projects.

It should be stressed that Denmark, Finland and Norway could be easily included in the same projects and with about the same agenda. In the Scandinavian countries history production was from the Renaissance onwards related to the State and the dynasties. As political changes, mainly the effects of war, formed different territories, the regions belonged to different states at times, or were "lost forever". This resulted sometimes in the moving of parts of state archives, but not so much in the moving of objects. In the perspective of Sweden objects were mainly brought to Sweden, from military campains (e.g. whole libraries) on the continent or in Denmark. Later on, with a slowly developing archaeology, items from the Classical world were imported, both to private collections and to official exhibitions and museums. This is, however, more a question of art history than archaeology. During rather long periods there was a parallellism in the use of ancient history to demonstrate the superior age and supremacy of Denmark -Norway and Sweden, respectively.

were undertaken during the second phase of the AREA network (AREA II, December 1999 - October 2000). The unsatisfactory condition of most archaeological archives across Europe, often little known and threatened with neglect, has underscored the urgency of their appropriate documentation. To ensure that these archives are better preserved, valorised and used—by archaeologists, curators, and all those concerned with cultural heritage and management—an extensive uniformly structured database was designed. In the future, it is hoped that this catalogue will contain all the major archival fonds relevant to the history of archaeology. At the present stage of its implementation, however, the database reflects the specific institutional possibilities and research concerns of each of the contributing partners, as briefly indicated below. These specificities should be kept in mind when consulting the Database itself.

Archaeology (General) BA F400/Archaeology (General) BSc F402
These degrees are designed to provide a general training in archaeology, covering both theoretical and practical approaches, while also giving you the opportunity to follow your interests in terms of periods, geographical areas and special fields of study. Students reading for both of these degrees take the same core courses in their first and second years. Those following the BSc route will normally then concentrate on a choice of more science-based course units, although they may also choose a proportion of arts-based units. Suitably qualified students may also take course units in the other UCL science departments.
Syllabus for F400 and F402
Note: Each single course unit (1 unit) is equal to 15 credits in the European Credit Transfer Scheme (ECTS), a half unit is 7.5 ECTS. This is a full programme of 4 units per year, equal to 60 ECTS.

ArchTerra. Extending the European Archaeology Web over Bulgaria, Romania and Poland

The networking and internationalisation of the existing academic resources, historical and cultural achievements, as well as the research efforts of the academic community in the field of Archaeology using computer, information and communication technologies is a recent trend with a rapidly growing impact on archaeological research, management and education. The reason for this is twofold: on the one hand, the international character of the archaeological material itself, and, on the other, the ability of these technologies to overcome the difficulties of sharing these resources beyond the national borders. One additional reason (although this development is still in its infancy) is the ability of these technologies to simulate group collaboration. Academic WWW facilities are increasingly being used by professional archaeologists in the European Union for a variety of purposes. Over the past 3 years an informal but truly pan-European virtual research network in the field of archaeology has grown up, which maintains its own virtual space of shared resources, personal forums, international organisations, and electronic journals. It was established in 1994, emulating its North American counterpart ArchNet, co-ordinated at the University of Connecticut. The current state of European trends toward virtual research collaboration can be listed on the basis of the information technologies used:

38. Antiquity Review Article Of Archaeology On The World Wide Web
In general terms there are three types of pages on the Web that you might wish to The primary index for european archaeology is provided by Arch Net
http://www.swan.ac.uk/classics/antiquity.html
Archaeology on the World Wide Web

An article first published in Antiquity 264 (September 1995). Only the electronic sections of the review have been included here Some links no longer exist; updated links now appear in square brackets. Comments and corrections are welcome to d.w.j.gill@swan.ac.uk Discussion Groups This is not a review of how the Internet can be used by archaeologists. There are, for example, numerous discussion groups which use electronic mail to disseminate information. These are of varying quality, and can fill up your electronic mailbox, but can provide some lively and stimulating discussion from scholars round the world. Many of these groups are now advertised on the Web, and an archived summary list can be found at Swansea
World Wide Web Pages
There are also many pages which I have not been able to visit. The Web is becoming so popular that some sites are being inundated by electronic visitors, and it has become very difficult or slow to obtain access. My advice (in the UK) is to start surfing early; by 11 am the response time across the network is considerably lengthened. As one of my colleagues put it, 'The early bird catches the World Wide Web Worm'. I have also tried to refrain from writing a review of pages. Pages are being revised all the time and by the time this appears in print, the Web will have changed out of all recognition. In general terms there are three types of pages on the Web that you might wish to consult. The first will consist of indexes of useful pages. These can be general in character or very specialised to a specific topic. The second will serve as information pages. These might include addresses of institutions and publishers, lists of archaeology courses, or perhaps personal home pages (PHPs) where you can learn more about colleagues! The third will consist of research data such as excavation reports, images, journal articles and the like. As a word of warning, remember that it is easy to surf around in the first category and never come across any real data. My advice would be to familiarise yourself with what types of resources are available, then concentrate on finding data suitable for your interests. If you are unable to find anything, consider putting your own page on the Web.
