Indo-European and Indo-Iranian Migrations
Indo-Europeans and Their Origins
A long standing, and still unchallenged, belief of historians is that the people of Europe, Iran, and India, with the exception of Hungarians and the Finns, have their ancestry in common. Based on historical evidence and supports from archaeology, historians propose the existence of a pre-historic tribal confederation, called by scholars "the Indo-Europeans", who eventually spread out from their original homeland to cover the mass of land in western Eurasia. Their language and culture survived through that of their descendants, and it is based on comparative studies of various Indo-European languages and cultures that the idea of a common ancestry first came to existence.
Considerable amount of criticisms has been bestowed upon the idea of Indo-European ancestry. It has been called a racist idea, it has been challenged by those who felt "left-out" of it, and it has been linked to colonialism and the idea of European superiority. Probably the worst use of this theory has been the Nazi ideology of a pure "Aryan" race. Nevertheless, our purpose here is purely historical, and for the sake of the narrative, we assume that the idea of a common Indo-European ancestry, first and foremost in linguistic and mythological terms rather than biological, is valid and at least supportable.
Due to the limitation of space in this article, I am forced to refer those more interested in the details of these theories to an excellent summary of all these arguments; a book by J.P. Mallory entitled “In Search of Indo-Europeans.” Out of all different theories, the present author is most inclined towards Prof. Mallory’s own “refined” version of Gimbutas’ theory. Mallory correctly points out that the limiting of the Proto-Indo-Europeans to the Don River basin causes practical problems for the explanation of their obvious later movements to the east of Caspian Sea and even further to the Amur River basin. He thus stretches the original homeland to include the western and northern shores of the Caspian. In Mallory’s view, the more easterly part of this “homeland” was where the ancestors of Indo-Iranians started their migrations from

GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE COLLECTION
The Archaeology collection reflects the interests of the Department of Archaeology in the College of Arts and Sciences and in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The collection consists of materials on the behavior, social organizations, arts and crafts, motivations, ways of life, and thoughts of people of the distant and recent past. The collection supports the Department of Archaeology's curriculum, including laboratory and field work. Laboratory work involves paleoethnobotany, conservation, micromorphological techniques, and soils research. Field work programs are conducted in field schools in Belize and Spain. Students may concentrate in Old World prehistoric and historical (Mediterranean, Near Eastern, or African) archaeology, or in New World prehistoric and historical (colonial American, industrial, New England, Mesoamerican, and Latin American) archaeology. The Department's undergraduate concentration leads to a BA degree in Archaeology. The Department's graduate program leads to the MA and PhD degrees in Archaeology, and MA degrees in Archaeological Heritage Management and Geoarchaeology.

Classical Studies in Central and Eastern Europe
Chester Natunewicz In spite of flourishing Classical scholarship in Central and Eastern Europe, relatively little is known in the West about what our Classics colleagues in that area of Europe are doing. Their work is seldom listed in Western bibliographies, and hundreds of their journals do not receive international circulation. In the Russian Federation, Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University stand out; in Ukraine, the Ivan Franko University in Lviv; in Moldova, the State University in Chisinau; in Georgia, Tbilisi University; in Armenia, the Yerevan State University; in Estonia, the Universities of Tallinn and Tartu; and in Lithuania, Vilnius University and Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas. In these universities the Classics departments/programs/institutes are found for the most part in the Schools/Faculties of Philology, Philosophy and History. In addition to these university centers there are smaller universities, as well as pedagogical schools/institutes, with less extensive Classics programs. In several countries the respective Academies of Sciences have institutes devoted to ancient studies. The classics are also taught in a number of both public and private secondary schools. In each of the Central and East European countries there are formal and informal associations and research groups that bestow much of their attention on the ancient Classics and publish scholarly materials. Other cultural institutions, like museums and libraries, help to disseminate knowledge about the ancient world through lectures, printed materials and exhibits.

ARCANE. Associated Regional Chronologies for the Ancient Near East and the Eastern Mediterranean.
1. Scientific quality of the proposal Please mark as appropriate: 1: poor 2: average 3: good 4: very good 5: excellent This is a very timely proposal, concerning an important episode in human history, and adopting an inter-regional approach. It combines several disciplines, but has a sharp focus and a well-defined goal. The participants are all experienced workers in their fields, and with a proven track-record in collaborative research. The goal is an important one, the expected quality of the work is high, and the chances of a worthwhile outcome are good. It is thus exceptionally worthy of support. The project addresses an acute and real problem in Near Eastern Archaeology which is clearly stated in the proposal.
2. Qualification of the Chair Person, the Steering Committee Members and the Team Leaders in relation to the proposal
Please mark as appropriate: 1: poor 2: average 3: good 4: very good 5: excellent The project is well structured, and at each level (from the principal named applicants to the individual regional coordinators) involves senior scholars with an excellent knowledge both of their specialist fields and their relevance to the common enterprise. It has an impressively wide range of expertise, with each constituent region being represented by a leading figure in the field. The Steering Committee includes representatives of a wide range of disciplines, and the applicants have demonstrated, both by their previous publications of focussed and co-ordinated research, and by their careful preparation of a wide and reliable range of regional representatives for this project, their skills in this respect. This degree of planning extends to a detailed specification of the published outputs, and the proposal already demonstrates an excellent grasp of the logistics of the enterprise. It will command great respect in the wider scientific community.

Abiel (ABIEL) Editorial responsibility: D.T. Potts, M.C.A. Macdonald Although the Western exploration of the Arabian peninsula is a phenomenon dating back several centuries, the systematic archaeological investigation of the region is relatively recent. Since the 1960s, however, more and more work of an archaeological and epigraphic nature has been concentrated on the countries of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, the U.A.E, and Yemen, and Arabian archaeology has emerged as an important sub-discipline of Near Eastern archaeology. This series is devoted to the publication of primary research in the countries of the Arabian peninsula, and aims to publish studies which extend in time from prehistory to the Islamic era.
