Manchester - Economic Facts
European and International Trade
Manchester is a favoured business location for European and International companies, with a reputation for quality and excellence. Evidence of this can be seen the large numbers of companies electing to relocate to the city each year. Manchester is also heavily involved in activities in Europe, working with partner cities towards a common goal of prosperity for all. Of the 550 overseas companies to have relocated to Manchester in the last decade, 283 came from Europe. In a survey by the Manchester Business School on the strengths of European regional cities, it was found that Manchester 'substantially met the criteria for international significant regional centres' A recent survey of Manchester executives found that executives rating their own city as having a 'very good' business environment. The city was also rated as being very good for entrepreneurial activity - no other city in Europe rated higher than Manchester on this factor. The same survey found that pro-business attitudes have become significantly better in Manchester, as have cultural amenities.
Centre of excellence
Manchester City Council is currently involved in activities within Europe to promote Manchester as a centre of excellence, and Manchester is one of the founder member states of the Telecities project and Eurocities, the association of European metropolitan cities.

Dewatripont, Mathias (Editor), Professor of Economics (Editor), Professor of Economics Sekkat, Khalid Trade and Jobs in Europe Much Ado About Nothing? Print ISBN 0198293607, 1999 Abstract: This book explores the impact of trade with less developed countries (LDCs) on employment in Europe. It supports the view that trade with LDCs has had limited impact on the labour market. Among its main findings are that trade with LDCs would be less harmful for Europe than for the USA, that the inequality problem in Europe is not wage inequality but the widespread unemployment of unskilled workers, and that technology has contributed to unemployment. The book has nine chapters. The first seven examine the impact of LDC trade on the European labour market; the final two address the social clause problem.

CANADA’S ECONOMIC RELATIONS WITH EUROPE CATA Alliance
The Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance Marketing Strategy High tech companies’ marketing strategies are devoted almost exclusively to exports. The successful Canadian high tech entrepreneur treats the United States as the domestic market. The reasons are obvious. It is the world’s largest market for high tech products and services; highly innovative and willing to try new approaches; a homogeneous market which uses a common language; and, of course, close at hand and inexpensive to visit. Once established in the States, high tech companies begin to broaden their marketing horizons. There is a simple geographical strategy. Companies in the eastern part of the country look first to Europe, those in the west to the Pacific Rim. Initial focus is on the countries with common language and cultures, the United Kingdom and France. Effort expands to other countries once success is achieved in the initial point of entry. There are two primary entry strategies. One involves establishment of a marketing and sales office in the target country. The second involves negotiation of a strategic alliance with an established player in the market. The latter approach is generally considered less expensive, allowing more rapid penetration of multiple markets. Managing the relationship with the partners is often difficult, however. Once the market position matures, it is not unusual for companies to solidify their position by acquiring their local partners. The next step, if it can be justified by the potential of the market, is investment in local facilities.

Eastern Europe
by David Lipton In late 1989 the countries of Eastern Europe broke loose from the Soviet Union, threw off communism, and began to construct democratic institutions and market-oriented economies. This great transformation is founded on the idea that freedom and prosperity can best be advanced by adopting the institutions and practices that have proven successful in Western Europe since World War II. The people of the region want "to return to Europe." To do so, they plan to dismantle the remnants of the communist economic system and build market-oriented economies based on private ownership. While this is a daunting task, the transformation is well under way. The Communist Inheritance What complicates the process of economic transformation is the burden posed by the inheritance of the communist economic system. One Russian pundit, commenting on the communist legacy, explained that anyone can turn an aquarium into fish stew, but it is much harder to turn fish stew into an aquarium. The communist inheritance has had two important dimensions for Eastern Europe. First, the laws, institutions, and ownership structure under communism are very different from what is needed for a modern, capitalist economy, so nearly all must be changed. Most important, the socialist ownership structure placed industry, services, and (with the exception of Poland) agriculture mainly in state hands. State ownership and central planning produced poor decisions about how to use resources and led to greatly distorted economies. Every Eastern European government skewed investment toward heavy industry and capital goods at the expense of light industry, services, and consumer goods.

7,000 Purchasers Trained in Central/Eastern Europe Español Français By Ian Sayers, ITC International Trade Forum - Issue 4/2003 Up to 70% of a firm’s export costs result from purchasing and logistics inputs. As demand for improved quality and consistency of supply rises, following closer trade ties with European markets, the role of buyers and logistics professionals in Central and Eastern European manufacturing companies has become pivotal to profitability and survival.
An ITC project, started in July 2000, was well timed to support the upgrading of the skills and knowledge of professionals in these areas. Professional support associations — essential in most economies — were scarce or non-existent under the former regime. Through a mix of coaching in the practical application of international working practices and transfer of methodologies, training materials and supporting infrastructure, ITC and its Swiss project partner, the Swiss Association for Purchasing and Materials Management (SVME), trained over 180 trainers and business counsellors from partner associations in six countries. These trainers are now part of a network of seven purchasing and supply management associations spanning the region. They support business professionals through information services, supplier referrals, accredited training programmes (both vocational and academic) and tailor-made in-company courses and consulting.

Business Round Table on IT Prospects in Central and Eastern Europe Español Français International Trade Forum - Issue 1/2001 Regional round tables stimulate networking and capacity building for e-trade. ITC joined with the Slovenian Ministry of Economic Relations and Development and WTO to hold a regional business round table on International Market Prospects for Information Technology Industries (Portorose, November 2000). Continued growth in the information technology (IT) industry is fuelling demand for skilled IT technicians and managers. Global market leaders are looking to the pool of skilled professionals with established production bases in Central and East Europe to enhance their supply potential and serve as partners for local integration. The event attracted 76 participants from 14 countries in the region. They included government policy-makers, national trade association officials and business executives. They were joined by government officials from India and the Philippines, as well as representatives of Oracle, Siemens, MCI Worldcom, Olivetti Lexicon and Ericsson.

Final report IFAT 2005 Sizeable increase in number of visitors to more than 108,000 trade visitors Higher share of international visitors and exhibitors Top marks for quality of business contacts Strong source of impetus for the economy
"The exhibitors and trade visitors at this year's fair all agree: For anyone in this industry who wants to do business, expand networks and receive orders at the international level, the international trade fair IFAT is an absolute must. Every three years it is a strong source of impetus for the environmental and waste-removal industry," summed up Detlev R. Gantenberg, Managing Director of Munich International Trade Fairs. His view was shared by Walter Behking, Head of Sales for Public Utility Vehicles, at MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG, Germany: "We were surprised by the large number of sales transactions at the fair and we expect post-fair business to be good. We managed to acquire several new customers, particularly from Eastern Europe."
Norbert Rethmann, Chairman of the Technical Advisory Board, confirmed IFAT's importance as a source of impetus for the industry: "Growing interest in IFAT as a gathering for the international environmental sector gives us every reason to be optimistic as we look to the future. The industry's growth prospects, especially as a result of economic development in the new EU countries, but also in China, for example, are positive. For Germany, this has also resulted in a number of new opportunities to become active in other countries."
