The objective is to consider the means by which the awareness of a common history may be fostered in the young people of Europe: such an awareness, by virtue of the very fact that it is a shared awareness, must be handed on, taught and learnt. It will be the business of this seminar to consider, taking account of national characteristics of educational systems, the current potential areas of agreement between the educational managers of the member States, with a view to deepening the sense of belonging to a culture whose diverse elements only enrich its common characteristics: such areas include methods of investigation, frameworks of reference, and ways of learning.

The dawn of the twentieth century was forged in hope and optimism. Here interviewees from Europe, Asia and the United States (boasting an average age of 102), recount the part they played in the century's early history. Whether fighting on the barricades of the failed Russian Revolution of 1905 or campaigning for votes for women; recalling the Paris Exposition of 1900, or President McKinley's assassination or witnessing the sinking of the Titanic, all remember the changes they lived through and the clash of forces and ideas before World War I. 1998. 56 min. The Atlantic Charter: The End of Colonialism

Introduction Faculty Foreign Language Requirements Course Requirements ... Reading List Introduction: UCLA's European History program offers graduate students the opportunity to work with some of the world's leading historians in their field. The European field faculty includes 25 of the more than seventy professors in the department. This large group covers an impressive number of sub-fields and provides graduate students a wide range of intellectual support. The European field sponsors lecture series and colloquia featuring eminent historians from around the country and abroad. These events encourage student-faculty interaction and give graduate students a forum for exchanging and discussing their ideas. Our students become central to an intellectual community dedicated to excellence in historical scholarship. UCLA offers both M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in European history, although there is no distinct M.A. program; students are admitted only for the Ph.D. degree. The Masters Degree is designed to satisfy requirements of the Department's doctoral program and is usually completed within two years. It consists of nine courses, six of which must be graduate courses. The other three can be chosen from among the Department's upper-division undergraduate offerings. For the M.A. degree, students must demonstrate proficiency in one approved European language; for the Ph.D., a second language must be completed. We expect students to finish the Ph.D. in six years of full-time study. They are required to do so in no more than seven years.

    I. Purpose The History Department offers the following joint Ph.D programs: with the Institute of French Studies, in French history; with the Skirball Department of Hebrew and Judaic Studies, in modern European and Jewish history; and with the Onassis Center for Hellenic Studies, in Byzantine and modern Greek history. The department is developing an MA in world history to begin in Fall 1998. In addition, the History Department has close ties to various programs and national houses including the Program in Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Program in Women's Studies, Center for European Studies, and Glucksman Ireland House. A minor field of concentration in comparative women's history (for the Ph.D.) and a specialization in women's history (for the MA) indicate an additional area of strength within the department. This policy statement describes the Bobst collections relating to European history primarily British, French, German, and Italian through the World War II era. Contemporary Western Europe, Jewish Studies, Eastern Europe, and the history of the Iberian peninsula are not included in this statement.
