http://www.lib.utah.edu/information/LClong.html
How Call Numbers Work Books are shelved in alpha-numeric order and every book must be assigned a unique number. There are three main sections to a call number:
CLASS NUMBER
Everything before the first letter is the Class Number. It indicates the subject area covered by the book, and should be read as a whole number. For instance, GB105 is larger than GB103.5
BOOK NUMBER (sometimes called a Cutter number)
The first letter indicates the start of the Book Number. It helps distinguish different books on the same subject and is usually based on the author's name and/or title of the book. Read these numbers one digit at a time. For instance, .R2 is larger than .R19
DATE OF EDITION
If two books on the same subject are written by authors of the same name and have the same title (highly unlikely) a date of edition may prove the distinguishing factor.
GB GB GB GB GB GB (.25 is smaller than .265, which is smaller than .28 which is smaller than .4. We use the classification system used at the Library of Congress (LC) which arranges books by their major subject. The list below shows the main areas of academic interest. Most general collection books are in the Stacks (new, outer building) on Levels One and Two.

Maps break down our inhibitions, stimulate our glands, stir our imagination, loose our tongues. The map speaks across the barrier of language; it is sometimes claimed as the language of geography. CARL O. SAUER
"The Education of a Geographer," 1956 Let us look at the map, for maps, like faces, are the signature of history. WILL DURANT T he division's general collections, which number over 3.5 million map sheets, include both single-sheet maps and multi-sheet map series. Single-sheet maps, which provide worldwide coverage at small and medium scales, are primarily general purpose and thematic maps of continents, countries, states, counties, and cities. Multi-sheet map series, which are usually prepared at large and medium scales, also provide worldwide coverage, normally at the country and state level. single-sheet maps This detail of the 1853 map of Wyoming County in the western part of New York State is typical of the large, wall-sized county maps that gained wide circulation in the northeastern United States before the Civil War. Published in Philadelphia by Newel S. Brown, this map provides coverage of the entire county showing township boundaries, roads, towns and villages, and names of land owners, as well as enlarged insets of the individual towns and villages and views of the more prominent landmarks and structures in the county. The richly decorated borders emphasize the rural and agricultural character of the county as well as the Native American origins of the county name.

This article is about the continent. For other meanings, see Europe (disambiguation)
Europe portal Europe is geologically and geographically a peninsula , forming the westernmost part of Eurasia . It is conventionally considered a continent , which, in this case, is more of a cultural distinction than a geographic one. It is bounded to the north by the Arctic Ocean , to the west by the Atlantic Ocean , to the south by the Mediterranean Sea , and to the east its boundary is culturally determined and unclear. However, Ural mountains are considered to be a clear geographical and tectonic landmark separating Europe and Asia. A satellite composite image of Europe World map showing location of Europe When considered a continent, Europe is the world's second smallest continent in terms of area , with an area of 10,600,000 km² (4,140,625 square miles), making it larger than Australia only. In terms of population it is the third largest continent after Asia and Africa . The population of Europe is roughly 700,000,000: about 11% of the world's population.

    Displaced Jews in Europe: 1945-1951
Dateline: 05/18/98 Approximately six million European Jews were killed during the Holocaust during World War II. Many of the European Jews who survived the persecution and death camps had nowhere to go after V-E Day, May 8, 1945. Not only had Europe been practically destroyed but many survivors did not want to return to their pre-war homes in Poland or Germany. Jews became Displaced Persons (also known as DPs) and spent time in helter-skelter camps, some of which were located at former concentration camps. The preferred migration destination for almost all survivors of the genocide was a Jewish homeland in Palestine. That dream eventually came true for many. As the Allies were taking Europe back from Germany in 1944-1945, the Allied armies "liberated" the Nazi concentration camps. These camps, which housed from a few dozen to thousands of survivors, were complete surprises for most of the liberating armies. The armies were overwhelmed by the misery, by the victims who were so thin and near-death. A dramatic example of what the soldiers found upon liberation of the camps occurred at Dachau where a train load of 50 boxcars of prisoners sat on the railroad for days, as the Germans were escaping. There were about 100 people in each boxcar and of the 5,000 prisoners, about 3,000 were already dead upon the arrival of the army.
