We would live in a perfect world if everyone were well-mannered and polite to each other. If only we could take a step back and experience times when chivalry reigned. Civility takes a back seat when everyone's in a rush. It's bad enough when adults let good manners lapse, but at least they usually know the difference between good and bad behavior. Trouble is, children learn by emulating their parents. Lisa Zakar, owner and director at Lisa Rose Dollhouse, noticed that many of the girls she was hosting for tea parties needed help with manners. They didn't know the basics of saying "please" and "thank you," how to drink without slurping, keep their napkins on their laps and keep their elbows off the table. "Baby boomers feel that women can do anything, so they shunned traditional manners," said etiquette instructor Naomi Lee. Worse yet, there's a double standard for behavior. Society still expects girls to be ladylike while allowing boys to get away with rough-and-tumble antics. But shouldn't everyone be encouraged to be polite and courteous?

To help prepare her kids for a family function in Georgia, Sara Kral did more than just help them pack. She signed them up for etiquette classes.
"The etiquette is much more formal and we thought it would be a good idea for the kids to take an etiquette class," says Kral, a mother of five in Tigard, Ore. Across the country, parents are signing their children up for classes to learn such skills as basic table manners, the importance of sending thank-you notes, social dancing, and proper behavior at a fine restaurant. Educators attribute the demand to an increase in the number of busy parents who want well-behaved kids but do not have time to teach them the intricacies of manners and etiquette at home.

(CBS) "Sit up straight", "say please", "share your toys," these are just a few of the many manners parents try to teach their children with varying degrees of success.
In the new book "The Gift Of Good Manners", etiquette expert Peggy Post offers up some suggestions on how to make the learning process a little easier for both parents and children. She visits The Early Show to talk about it. Read an excerpt from Chapter One: Building the Foundations At some point usually between six and twelve weeks your baby will look at you and smile. As days and weeks go by, she will learn to greet you with expressions of both recognition and pleasure. These are among her earliest forays into the parent-child relationship. She is learning to trust you and to depend on your presence in her life. As she wakes to the world, her trust in you forms the bedrock for all her experiences to come. Over her first twelve months, your baby will acquire an astonishing array of physical and mental skills, progressing from an almost totally reactive being who responds instinctively to physical stimuli (an empty tummy, a wet diaper, a sudden noise) to one who makes deliberate choices. She will begin to master her body and start to manipulate her environment grasping objects she wants, for example. She will learn to distinguish her primary caregivers and cling to them. Around five or six months, she will become delightfully sociable. She will begin to sense herself as a separate being and learn to recognize her name. She will be driven to explore by her limitless curiosity. From birth to twelve months, a baby is an incredibly busy little person.

Manners are constantly changing from one century or one generation to the next. For example, a handshake originally was meant to show that men were not carrying a sword or dagger in their hands. Men still tip their hats because once knights in armor lifted the visors of their helmets to show their faces. And it wasn't too many years ago that a man almost always got up in a crowded bus and gave his seat to a woman. Nevertheless, certain manners do survive from one decade to the next, and this is because manners make life easier for everybody. There are three important ideas behind the good manners we use today: custom, consideration, and common sense. Custom is the habit of doing certain things like shaking hands and tipping hats mentioned above. Consideration is the most important idea behind all good manners. Almost always, being considerate is being well-mannered. Consideration is simply thinking about the way the other person feels. Being rude to someone is bad manners, not because a book says so, but because it causes hurt feelings. Nearly all good manners have in element of common sense. If you are standing in the rear of a crowded elevator, it's not reasonable-nor good manners-to try pushing your way to the front so you can get out first.

Minding Miss Manners
Advice for teaching your children good behavior
by Patricia Sullivan When it comes to teaching children the basics of good manners, one name quickly comes to mind for advice: etiquette columnist and author Miss Manners, otherwise known as Judith Martin. When "etiquette-free children" are sent into the educational system, it causes a terrible situation, according to Martin. These children disrupt lesson plans, causing teachers to stop what they are doing to reprimand the child who is behaving poorly and remind him or her to be courteous. This means that teachers spend less time teaching and more time disciplining. Teaching by example and reminders
Because children tend to copy what they see and hear around them, the best way to teach good behavior is "by example and nagging," she says. Martin is quick to clarify that by nagging, she doesn't mean scolding; she means reminders. So, strike the phrase "Do as I say, not as I do" from your speech. Remember, the way you react to a rude sales clerk, telephone solicitor who interrupts your family's dinner, or driver who cuts you off on the road sets an example for your children. Martin says that so many families eat on the run nowadays that when parents do sit down with their children, they're often surprised to find out that the children do not use good table manners. If, for instance, your extended family is gathered at the dining room table for Thanksgiving dinner and your child begins talking with his or her mouth full of food, resist the urge to shout "Shut your mouth while you're eating!" Instead, be polite yourself and say something along the lines of, "Grandma and grandpa are eager to hear what you have to say, but please don't talk with your mouth full of food." Keep in mind that reminders work without embarrassing your child.

With humour, enthusiasm and energy she makes learning good manners fun for kids. by Jeff Louderback L ong gone is the "Leave it to Beaver" era, when it was unheard of for children not to address their elders with "thank you, sir" and "yes, ma'am."
