You take the children out to a nice restaurant and suddenly they're making rude noises and playing with their food. At church they can't stay in their seats. At the toy store or playground, they push other kids out of the way In their zeal to get to the fun stuff. Every parent experiences that moment when their children, instead of minding their manners, appear to have misplaced them. The thing is, your kids know better. You've instructed them on good manners at home. Why, then, do they forget?

The Three Keys to Parenting a Polite Child From Cyndee S. Harrison
In my work as an etiquette instructor, I enjoy sharing parenting tips and techniques which can be easily integrated into even the busiest family's schedule. Here are the three most essential keys to helping ensure your child will grow into a polite adult: 1. PROVIDE REGULAR OPPORTUNITIES TO PRACTICE. 2. MODELING, MODELING, MODELING: In order for our children to develop the values which are essential to being a truly courteous, they must see people whom they respect and admire exhibit these same kind qualities to others. Patriotism, respect for the aged, work ethic, and a general sense of gratitude are just some of the things that children can learn by seeing from adults. And while none of us want to act like a finishing school matron all of the time, it is important that we help children see the benefits of polite behavior by demonstrating them in the things we say and do. Limit exposure to television and media (did you see the 'Best Burp' award on Nick?) influences which are incongruent to your own beliefs and values and help children understand that behaviors that may be acceptable to some families or groups are simply not OK in your own.

    Teach Your Children Manners
Does your child have good manners?
    Table manners

Teach your child to close his mouth when chewing his food, and teach this to him at the outset because once your child gets into the habit of chewing food with his mouth open, it may be a hard habit to break. When a person chews food with his mouth open, it speaks volumes about his upbringing – or, more specifically, his lack thereof.
Teach your child to eat his food with a knife and a fork. Surprising though it may be, there are still grown-ups who are fairly inept at using a knife and fork. The reason for this is perfectly understandable. Indian food often doesn’t require the use of any cutlery, and one can get by even without using a spoon. But, your child will not be eating only Indian food for the rest of his life. Chances are that he may very well be invited to a restaurant serving international cuisine, where he may be required to use a knife and a fork, and any unease will show through. To avoid him facing such a situation, serve food that he can eat with a knife and a fork, so he gets a little practice.
Before taking the last bit or last piece of something that has been served, always ask if someone else would like it. No one would really take the last bit from you, but it is considered polite to ask. At the most, someone may like a small bite from your portion.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Barbara Gilmour was raised in a family where good manners were taught and practiced. She has a degree in Home Economics from Penn State University where she received etiquette instruction. She married into a family where all aspects of the social graces were taught. She was a stay-at-home mom to raise her two daughters. For many years, after the girls were in school, she had her own floral design business.
In the mid 1990's, Barbara decided to try something new. She spent a year researching and writing two 10-hour courses, Manners for Kids 8-12 and Manners for Teens. These courses have been taught locally for several years.
Barbara has spent close to three years expanding the content of the Manners for Kids 8-12 course to reach more children. This content has been built into a new course called, Tanner's Manners: Be a "Kool Kind Kid."

Encouragement Manners-to-Go, Please Written by Zan Tyler The Number One Reason for Private Education I was shocked. Our society has become so rude and ill-behaved that this desire for manners has superceded academics. Parents increasingly want an education for their children that will not only educate the mind, but will train the heart and encourage good behavior as well. Homeschooling and the Development of Manners An American Dictionary of the English Language Our family has always incorporated manners training into our school day, both formally and informally. This type of training becomes extremely important as your children reach the age where they begin applying for jobs, internships, and college entrance. I have impressed upon all three of my children that good manners will not only keep them out of trouble, but will often open the doors to invaluable opportunities in the real world. Do you want to instill manners into the lives of your children, but you are not sure where to start? Would you like to read a book together as a family that will discuss how to handle a variety of social situations? Would you like to give your children some training that will increase their poise and benefit their careers for years to come? June Hines Moore, a nationally recognized author and consultant on social and business etiquette, has developed a wonderful series of manners and etiquette resources that you can easily use in your home. These books will not only enable you to teach your children good manners, but will instill in your children a biblical understanding of manners.

by Imam Ashraf Ali al-Tahanawi It should be borne in mind that the bringing up of children in the proper manner is of prime importance. This is because whatever good or bad habits they learn in their childhood, they do not leave them for the rest of their lives. From the time of infancy till they reach maturity, the following matters should be strictly adhered to: 1. Ensure that the child drinks the milk of a pious, religious woman. Milk has a great effect in the life of a person. 2. It is the habit of women to frighten their children by mentioning the police or other frightening persons or objects. This is an evil habit. Children become weak-hearted because of this. 3. Set aside specific times for making him drink his milk or feeding him so that he may remain healthy. 4. Keep him clean, neat and tidy because one remains healthy in this way.

Resources for Private Schools Many people believe that learning good manners and etiquette is old-fashioned and unnecessary. But, the reality is that developing strong social skills and good character (of which teaching good manners and etiquette is only a part) is more important now than ever. Having children learn proper conduct and social skills is critical for developing self-esteem and self-confidence in all social situations - which will become even more important as these children grow into adults entering the professional world. An April 2003 report by the research group Public Agenda showed that 43 percent of teachers in public schools spend more time on dealing with behavioral issues than they do teaching A 1999 poll by ABC NEWS/World News Tonight reported that 73 percent of Americans thought manners were worse than 20 or 30 years ago.

Good manners go beyond not making faces in the mashed potatoes and remembering to say "please" and "thank you." Whether at home, in the classroom or on the playground, it's important to teach children to always show respect and courtesy to others. Just about any adult will say that children today are not as polite as he was as a child. How is that possible? Experts explain that good manners are not something you are born with. All children need to be taught such common courtesies as putting a napkin on a lap or calling an adult "Ma'am" or "Sir." "Children can scarcely be too young to be taught the rudiments of etiquette, nor can the teaching be too patiently or too conscientiously carried out," said Emily Post in "Etiquette: The Blue Book of Social Usage," which was first published in 1922. Proper etiquette and respect for others should be instilled in young people so that they grow up to be well-mannered adults. The following are some basic social graces that no child should be without: Not-so-common courtesies
Teach your child to address adults by their last names. It is what you say that your child will echo. Don't expect your kids to call the neighbors the Porters if you call them Betty and Pete.
