by Heidi Hoff Your child has been invited to yet another birthday party. Gone are the days when she required you to stick around for the entire party and now tells you that you can leave the second you drop her off at the door. You secretly hope she remembers her manners and doesn’t take over the gift opening from the birthday child. The only thing you can really do though, is to go over a few basic rules, maybe engage in a bit of role play and then let her go!
Here is a basic list of manners your child should know when attending a birthday party:
Make sure your child says hello to the parents as soon as she’s arrived. That way, they know she’s there and may not have to wait for anyone else in order to get the party started.
Have your child take off his or her shoes when entering the house.
If there is no designated area to put the gift, your child should ask where he could place it.

Caveat: We could have tried (and almost certainly failed) to cover the myriad aspects of morality, ethics and manners. We chose instead to make this a small page. Our main goal is to recommend that parents not forget to teach these very important concepts to their children. We're reluctant to make many specific suggestions on HOW to teach a child about character because we recognize that our audience is worldwide and we know that different cultures have different values. But we do believe these concepts are as necessary to your child's well-being as are issues of self-care. Some people believe that children should be free to learn morality and ethical behavior on their own. We agree with authors Linda and Richard Eyre, however, who write in "Teaching Your Children Values" that this kind of thinking is "analogous to setting a tiny, powerless vessel down in the midst of turbulent, destructive currents and hoping that by some chance it will wash into a safe harbor" (p. 22). As you peruse our suggestions below, please keep in mind that we aren't telling you what to do. If you have a different way, that's fine with us. But we encourage you to make sure that your child isn't growing up a moral vacuum adrift and at the mercy of outside influences.

With the advent of videogames, fast foods and more after school activities than ever before, eating at an actual dining table has become an uncommon thing for America’s youth. Common courtesy at the dining table has become an even more uncommon thing in American society today. The following three tips can be applied at any dining table, even one at your local pizza joint, to make your mealtimes far more enjoyable. Modeling these behaviors and teaching them to your children will eliminate much mealtime stress and make these times quality times for you and your family.
          Napkins
          When to Start
So many people forget the common courtesy of waiting until everyone at the table has a meal before beginning to eat. There is nothing ruder than beginning to eat when others at the table don’t have food in front of them yet. If you’re eating with a large number of people it may not make sense to wait until the 100th person has been served. However, courtesy would demand that when sitting down to eat with a small family, you wait until everyone has been seated and served before digging in. Another common occurrence in the average American family these days is the child who wolfs down his meal and then runs off to play a video game or hang out with friends rather than taking advantage of this quality time with his family.

of 4 In any civilized society, there's a code of conduct all must learn. It's a refinement process of complicated social skills that takes years to master; don't just hope your kids catch on.
While the protocol of today is definitely more casual than that in the past, if parents want their children to get by in "polite society," they have to be conscious of teaching etiquette in a deliberate, intentional waywithout, of course, shoving manners instruction down their kids' throats.
So think about the manners that are important to you, and use the following advice to lead your kids down the road of proper etiquette.

Field Guide to Parenting
... Solutions A to Z Table Manners for Toddlers My kids are one and three years of age. We'll be spending the holidays with my husband's family, and they are very oriented toward good table manners. I've always thought my kids were too young to be taught manners, but I guess the earlier you start, the better. What manners are kids capable of at different ages? And how do I get them to comply without nagging?
Your approach when teaching manners and other social graces should be gradual yet insistent, with realistic expectations for the child's age. You don't want to overwhelm your children with too many table rules at once.
YOUR OWN ETIQUETTE
When taking a one- and three-year-old to dine at Grandma's, the person who must exhibit the most manners is you. Etiquette instruction starts with your kind and considerate treatment of your children, coupled with thoughtfulness for your hosts.
If your younger child screams at the table, it's up to you to politely take him away and gently calm him. Your focus is on keeping your baby pleasant during the meal, even if it means he has to sit on your lap while you attempt to eat.

Life Skills Children Need to Succeed
Why We Need to Teach Manners in School
By Karen Zauber, NEA Why should we teach manners in the classroom? Because kids need good manners in order to succeed. If kids aren't learning basic manners at home, we need to be teaching them at school. Otherwise, through subtle social signals, the kids "without manners" will lose out and never know why. And here's a scary thought: students are learning manners from us whether we are "teaching" them or not. As Robert Fulghum ( All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten ) said: "Don't worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you." Where to Begin
Manners include so many aspects of human behavior that you'll need to determine which ones you want to focus on. Here are two simple behaviors you might start with. 1. Being polite
